The concept of multirelation is a binary relation between elements of one set and subsets of another (not necessarily distinct) set. Multirelations are more than simply an empty generalisation of relations between elements of two (not necessarily distinct) sets. In fact, the major classes of them, i.e., upclosed and downclosed multirelations, correspond, in the precise sense of a duality based on Jnsson/Tarski duality, to monotone and antitone maps, respectively. Applications of multirelations will be used to illustrate that multirelations are more expressive than relations but, in general, not quite as transparent.
