PROGRAM SYLLABUS
Core Competency - Outdoor Living (OL)
Unit OL-1 1.1 General Outcomes Camp Site Selection / Shelter Principles Demonstrate the ability to select camp/shelter sites that conform to land management agency rules, environmental standards and group safety. Know various hazards that impact sites for appropriate biomes (arctic, coastal, tropic, desert, rivers). Demonstrates efficient shelter construction with selected equipment. Fire-craft Demonstrate the ability to decide whether to have a fire or not depending on such factors as; availability of fuel, site safety and environmental capability, weather conditions, etc. Demonstrate the ability to properly select a site and create a fire with concern for safety and the environment. Demonstrate proper fire extinguishing techniques considering safety and the environment. Navigation and Travel Techniques Explain and demonstrate various types of maps, compasses, and GPSs and their use as navigational aids. Demonstrate reading and plotting common coordinate systems. Develop and execute a travel control plan to lead a group efficiently, comfortably, and safely in the backcountry Utilize specific travel techniques considering group goals, team physical condition, various terrain types, and existing natural hazards. Personal Hygiene Understand positive effects of good personal hygiene. Model best practices of personal hygiene techniques for; bathing, clothes washing, hand cleaning, and female specific hygiene. Demonstrate proper understanding and implementation of foot care, hand care, and skin and eye care. Food Prep. and Dietary Management Demonstrate the ability to maintain good physical, mental, and emotional health of group by proper food planning and preparation. Accredited by the W ildern ess Education Association (WEA) 5.3 OL-6 6.1 Demonstrate basic cooking skills to prepare well-balanced and enjoyable meals. Water Procurement and Treatment Understand and effectively communicate the importance of treating water for differing containments in the back-country (viruses, bacteria, protozoan) Understand industry available water treatment options as well as pros and cons of each. (boiling, iodine, bleach, filters, and battery operated purification devices). Demonstrate the ability to treat water utilizing various water treatment procedures (boiling, iodine, bleach, filters, and at least one battery operated device). Identify water sources-surface and sub-surface. Sanitation Understand and demonstrate best practices for handling group kitchens, dishwashing, water basins, food waste and trash. Demonstrate disposal of human waste including proper construction and use of a cat-hole and/or latrine. Understands the principles for preventing the spread of illness. Knots & Hitches Demonstrate ability to teach common knots utilized in the outdoors. Demonstrate knowledge of specific knots and hitches to be utilized in the appropriate situation. Weather Forecasting Demonstrate proper use of physical senses, altimeter, and barometer to predict weather in the field. Demonstrate understanding of wind direction and cloud formations to predict weather. Demonstrate ability to adequately research and employ weather forecast, seasonal weather conditions, and historical weather patterns of local area into field based weather predictions. Clothing/Equipment Understand heat transfer methods and apply thermal regulation concepts to clothing system. Demonstrate ability to select appropriate clothing systems for safe and comfortable backcountry living in different environments. (Dress W.I.S.E) Demonstrate ability to prepare adequate instructor/guide repair kit and use to repair damaged equipment.
