‘To all Rectors and up in Canada and the United States
D
x Choir Leaders, Rectors and District Rectors,
It has come to our attention about the issue of MUSIC COPYRIGHT.
In past years we were not exposed as much as we are presently and sheet
music was not utilized as much in the past as we do now.
The convenience of a photocopier does not make photocopying
original copyrighted music correct. We subject ourselves as a registered
charitable organization and church, in both Canada and the United States,
to serious legal action for violating copyright laws.
I would ask each one of you to ensure that all previously
photocopied music be destroyed that is in your possession, in the
possession of our choir members and that, which may be found in our
churches. This includes all sheet music from Christmas Programs, Youth
Programs, Children’s Programs, Seniors’ groups as well as local and district
folders. This also pertains to photocopied Organ music and Instrumental
music.
For the time being, please do not purchase any sheet music either.
We are investigating this issue further to also understand the law and how
we are part of it. We have many nice hymns in our four choir books of
which surely there are many that our choirs have not learned as of yet.
Use these for the time being. Our North America Music Committee is
working on obtaining new music for the future.
‘Thank you very much for your fervent and immediate action in this
matter.
Sincerely,
Wagner
