The Lanjigarh Project


Lanjigarh is synonymous with VALs project that consists of an Refinery and proposed Niyamgiri bauxite mine that was identified for mining by the Government of Orissa all the way back in the late 1970s In the late 1990s, Sterlite Industries India Limited (SIIL), a Vedanta subsidiary, signed a MoU with the Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) for development of bauxite mines and setting up of an alumina refinery at Lanjigarh Vedanta moved ahead with the actual construction in 2004. Consultation was conducted with the local inhabitants in line with the rules and regulations of the country

The Issue
Criticised by human rights and activist groups, due to their operations in Niyamgiri Hills, that are said to threaten the lifestyle of the Dongria Kondh that populate this region. Disturbing natural habitat in the region by destroying more than 10 hectares of land and starting construction onsite without obtaining necessary clearances Critiqued by the Orissa State Pollution Control for air pollution and water pollution in the area

Problems Raised by local People


Consider hills sacred, so they dont want mining to happen there They dont want any development in their region as Vedanta will occupy their land Mining will cause various air and water pollution in the region Destruction of wildlife

Communication- People
Launched a series of public awareness campaigns for the people of Orissa Focus on on-going CSR initiatives effecting positive & dramatic changes in the lives of the people around its project area Started hospitals, mobile health units, and health awareness camps Initiated serving the concept of mid-day meal kitchens in government schools

Communication- Investors
Group attends investor seminars which provide opportunities for two-way communication with investors and analysts and feedback is provided to the Board Publishes sustainability development report wherein it provides information about all CSR activities undertaken by Vedanta group Submitted their reports which are now available on the website of the Ministry www.envfor.nic or www.moef.nic Upload videos on you tube providing relevant information.
