The Virginia House of Delegates Art Contest

2011-2012 School Year




Statewide Art Contest for Grades K-12
The Virginia House of Delegates annual art contest is open to public, private, and homeschooled students in grades K-12. The goal
is to provide students an opportunity to be creative, explore new ideas, and share their vision on a topic that is related to Virginias
rich heritage.

Theme

Individual students will create an original two-dimensional artwork that illustrates the following topic:

An Idea for a Law


Starting at an early age, students are developing the requisite knowledge and skills for informed, responsible participation in public
life and learning how to be good, effective citizens. As students progress, they are introduced to the concepts of Rule of Law and
strive to understand the impact of laws in their daily lives.
Students are asked to develop an idea for a law, create an original two-dimensional artwork that illustrates the law and/or
its effect, and explain in writing the purpose of the law why you think the law is a good idea.

Guidelines

The contest is divided into three grade groups: K-5, 6-8, and 9-12. There is a limit of one entry per student. Participants must use
the specified Entry Form which must be signed by a parent or guardian, if not, the entry will be disqualified.
In addition to the Entry Form, participants must attach the Information Label to the back of their entry.
Accepted artwork mediums are as follows:
Paintings: oil, acrylic, watercolor
Drawings: pastel, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, marker
Prints: lithograph, silk screen, block print
Mixed Media: use of two or more mediums such as pencil, marker, watercolor, etc.
Computer-generated art
Photography
The artwork must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. Artwork entered must
be in the original medium(s) not a scanned reproduction.
The artwork may not exceed 12 inches x 18 inches.
Entries must be postmarked by December 2, 2011. Mail artwork, Entry Form, and Information Label to: Attention Art Contest,
Legislative Education and Development (LEAD) Office, Virginia House of Delegates, P.O. Box 406, Richmond, VA 23218. No

responsibility is assumed by the Virginia House of Delegates for lost, late, illegible, incomplete, stolen, postage due, or misdirected entries.

Judging

Entries which meet the above guidelines will be accepted and judged equally on the following criteria: creativity (50%), originality (30%),
and neatness (20%). Winners will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by the Virginia House of Delegates. All entry materials
become the exclusive property of the Virginia House of Delegates and will not be returned.

Prizes

One winner will be selected from each grade group and will be presented with a $100 United States Savings Bond and an invitation to
the Virginia State Capitol. All eligible entries will receive a certificate of participation from the Virginia House of Delegates Clerks Office.
The winning artwork will be displayed in the Virginia State Capitol. Winners will be notified by January 6, 2012.

directors, employees, licensees, and successors from any liability or claimed liability in connection with this entry.
