In 1949, the lake was sprayed with a pesticide that contained DDT in order to Kill all the midges, When the lake was sprayed again in 1954 and 1957 many grebes (a type of fish-eating bird) died. Analysis revealed that the fish in the lake ‘were heavily contaminated with the pesticide. The flow chart below shows the build up of pesticide in the organisms living in the lake in the late 1950s.
