ASSIGNMENT 2
Non Flow Processes
1. Define specific heat at constant pressure and specific heat at constant volume and
prove that their difference gives the value of gas constant.

2 Show that internal energy is a property of a system.

3. 0.45 Kg of air at 450K expands isentropically to 3 times of its original volume and
temperature falls to 290 K. If 50KJ of work is done by air during the expansion process,
evaluate the adiabatic exponent, gas constant and specific heats at constant pressure and
volume.

4. 12 Kg of air at an absolute pressure of 1.5 bar and 300 K is compressed at constant

temperature until its volume reduces to ¼th of its original volume. Make calculations for
initial and final parameters, work performed and heat transfer.

5. 1 Kg of air is expanded slowly in a piston cylinder arrangement from 6 bar and 0.015
m³. During the process, heat is exchanged with the surroundings at a rate sufficient to
make the process isothermal. Make calculations for final pressure, work done, change in
internal energy and heat interaction.

6. Air initially at 300kpa pressure and 0.02 m³ volume expands according to the law
PV=C till the pressure reduces to 150kpa. Subsequently it is compressed at constant
pressure to its original volume of 0.02 m³. Sketch the process on PV diagram and make
calculations for work interaction per unit mass of air

7. 60 liters of hydrogen at 20º C and 1 bar is compressed adiabatically to 9.8 bar. It is

then cooled at constant volume to pressure P3 such as to have temperature of 20º C and
further expanded isothermally so as to reach initial stage. Find (1) work done during each
process (2) Change in internal energy during each process. Take Cp = 14.4 KJ/Kg K and
Cv = 10.8 KJ/Kg K. Show the processes on PV plot.

8. 0.2 m3 of ideal gas at a pressure of 2 Mpa and 600K is expanded isothermally to 5

times the initial volume. It is then cooled to 300K at constant volume and then
compressed back polytropically to its initial state. Determine the net work done and heat
transfer during the cycle. Also draw the PV diagram of the cycle.

9. 3 Kg of air at an absolute pressure of 100kpa and temperature of 300K is compressed

polytropically until the pressure and temperature becomes 1500kpa and 500K
respectively. Evaluate the polytropic exponent, final volume and work of compression.
Gas constant for air = 287 KJ/Kg K.
