In the News...
Parent Teacher Conferences
t was wonderful seeing all of you last week at
conferences. Ms. Schallmo and appreciate all the
support you are giving your child. When we work
as a team we give the children what they need to
be successful. Thanks again!!

AcceIerated Reader
A requirement for my third graders this year is
taking AR tests each marking period. For the first
marking period each child will need to take two AR
tests at his or her Just Right Level. They must
score 80% or better to pass the test. The students
should be working on an AR book every week until
they have passed the tests. We suggest having
your child read his or her book a couple of times
before taking the test.

FieId Trip
We will be taking a field trip to the Michigan State
Capitol & Michigan Historical Museum on Monday,
December 5th, 2011. The students will be leaving
school at 8:30 and returning to school at 3:00. We
will be eating at the museum in the cafeteria so the
students will need a sack lunch/drink.

HaIIoween Party/Brown Bag
On Monday, October 31, 2011, we will be having a
Brown Bag Lunch at 12:25-1:00 and then our
Halloween Party 1:00-1:50. This is our first Brown
Bag Lunch of the year. We would like to invite
family members to join us in Room 20 for lunch.
We all eat together and enjoy the company of our
family and friends. Parents can bring their child a
special lunch or send them with cold lunch. We will
not be going to the cafeteria during lunch time.
The boys and girls will be changing into their
costumes during Brown Bag after they eat and
wearing it for the rest of the day.

What have we been up to?
Language Arts:
Our first unit in language arts is People and Places.
We are working on Theme 2 "Life in Many Places.
During read aloud, we have been reading, My Side
of the Mountain by Jean Craighead Moore. The
new vocabulary words for Theme 2 are landform,
breathe, anxiously, architecture, location,
distinguish, popular, coast, voyage, and creek.
The second comprehension strategy is asking
questions when reading. The students have been
working on consonant blends in spelling and point
of view writing. They had the opportunity to
respond to Miss Schallmo's Blog during computer
lab on Wednesday.

Math:
On Monday, the students will begin Chapter 3,
Adding & Subtracting. This chapter will require
students to add and subtract 2-digit numbers
fluently, estimate sums, add/subtract decimals, and
practice problem solving. t is a good idea to keep
practicing ixl math at home.
