We, VN1, have been given one of the most rare opportunities
of anyone, in any generation in history. East Germany is one
of the last frontiers of Christianity in Europe. Today, it is the
most atheistic and least evangelized region on the Conti-
nent. What we are creating right now in East Germany will be
the future of Christianity in that part of the World. That future
is being decided now ...what will that future be?
East Germany is what missiologists call a “forgotten field”. Huh? That means East
Germany was of interest when it was separated from the free world by the Iron Curtain
of Communism. But when the Iron Curtain fell, so did the interest. It was a blip on the
historical radar then disappeared into obscurity. They got democracy, a free market
economy, and more food in the tummy so we considered it ‘Mission Accomplished”.
The Church often treats mission fields like home fashion trends - Iron Curtain, Bamboo
Curtain, 10/40 Window, The Persian Rug? It will be a new trend next year determined
by somebody with a map, a pet project, and an issue of Better Homes & Gardens. But
mission fields are people and their needs don’t change with our tastes. It doesn’t
matter where in the world people are if they have not had a Gospel witness.
