 Active immunization
• TT formal toxoid
• Plain toxoid or aluminum hydroxide
adsorbed toxoid
• Tetanus toxoid given alone or with
triple vaccine (DPT)
• Stimulates the production of protective
anti toxin
• All persons should be immunized
regardless of age
 Combined vaccine-DPT
• Diphtheria,pertusis,tetanus
• Primary course-3 doses of DPT at
interval of 4-12 weeks starting at 6
weeks of age
• 1st booster-18 months
• 2nd booster-5--6 years of age(only DT)
• 3rd booster-after 10 years of age(TT)
 MONOVALENT VACCINES
• Purified TT-less reactions,long lasting
immune response
• Storage-4--10°c not to be freezed
• Primary course-2 doses of purified TT
0.5ml given at 1-2 months interval
• 1st-booster 1 year after two initial dose
• 2nd-booster 5 years after 1st booster
• Required in adults including pregnant
woman

Prevention of neonatal tetanus
• Providing home delivery&educating
five cleans (1) clean hands
(2) clean delivery surface
(3) clean cord tie
(4) clean razor blade
(5) clean cord stump
 Prevention of unimmunized
pregnant woman
• First dose as early as possible during
pregnancy
• Second dose atleast a month later or
atleast 3 weeks before delivery
• Three doses 16-36 weeks allowing an
interval of 1-2 months between the 2
doses
• IMMUNIZED PREGNANT WOMAN– a
booster dose is sufficient
