Midterm Review

Inverse Chapters: finding cofactors, minors, the matrix of cofactors, and the adjoint of a matrix understand what an elementary matrix is, and how to write one from an elementary row operation expressing A or its inverse as a product of elementary matrices know how to set up and prove if and only if theorems (you MUST prove BOTH directions! most students forget to prove both ways!)

Proofs: - A is invertible if and only if A can be expressed as a product of elementary matrices

Determinant Chapters: the weave method for finding 2x2 or 3x3 determinants cofractor expansion (works for any size) using elementary row operations to solve for a determinant (have to get to upper triangular form), and knowing how to balance the elementary row operations used (this method works for any size matrix) finding areas of triangles and parallelograms using determinants using Cramers Rule to solve a 2x2 or 3x3 linear system

Proofs: - det(AB) = det(A)det(B) - det(A^{-1}) = 1 / det(A) - If A is an nxn matrix, then A adj(A) = det(A) I - If det(A) is not 0, then A^{-1} = 1/det(A) adj(A) - If A is invertible, then Ax=b has a unique solution for any b - A is invertible if and only if A is row equivalent to I
