Natural gas lanterns were Iirst lit in Russia on the Aptekarsky Island oI Saint Petersburg back
in 1819. The history oI 'big gas in the Soviet Union began in 1946 upon commissioning oI the
Saratov Moscow gas trunk line. Gazprom State Gas Concern was established in 1989 on the basis
oI the USSR Gas Industry Ministry. In 1993 the Concern laid the Ioundation Ior setting up Gazprom
Russian Joint Stock Company, which was renamed in 1998 as Gazprom Open Joint Stock Company.
The Company has registered trademarks in Russia and abroad, with the exclusive right to use them held
by Gazprom.

OAO Gazprom`s mission is to ensure a saIe, eIIicient, and balanced supply oI natural gas, other
types oI energy resources, and reIined products to consumers. Gazprom`s strategic goal is to take the
leading position among global energy companies by entering new markets, diversiIying business
activities and ensuring reliable supplies.
Reserves and Gas Production
Gazprom Group possesses the world`s largest natural gas reserves. As oI December 31, 2008 the
Group`s ABC1 resources were estimated at 33.1 trillion cubic meters. According to the
international PRMS standards the Group`s proven and probable hydrocarbon reserves are estimated
at 27.3 billion tons oI Iuel equivalent and valued at USD 230.1 billion. With 17 per cent oI the global
gas production, Gazprom Group is the leader among the world`s oil and gas companies. In 2008
Gazprom Group produced 549.7 billion cubic meters oI gas.
