COURSE DESCRIPTION Focuses on the basic concept, scope and nature of Sociology; emphasis given on the study of mans behavior in a society. It also covers a review of the history and the culture of the Filipinos, which help explain the existence of various societal problems and challenges we face today and their possible solutions. Topics explored within the course include: the sociological perspective; classic and contemporary sociological theory; methods; culture and society; the socialization process; groups and organizations; bureaucracy; sexuality and social construction of gender; deviance; social stratification; social class; race and ethnicity; aging; economy and work; politics and government; family; religion; education; health and medicine. The students are expected to understand and explain the basic concept of Sociology and the different problems affecting his day to day existence. The course will also highlight population education. COURSE OBJECTIVES This course provides students with an examination of the theory, methods and substance of sociology. This course is designed to improve students ability to read, interpret, and think critically. Policies and current events are incorporated where possible to illuminate course concepts.

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) 1. Perform his role as a concerned citizen, and not as a mere member of the society where he belongs 2. Discuss basic knowledge concerning key principles, theories and concepts involved in Sociology and Population Education 3. Develop critical thinking in discussing various societal problems and issues and be able to propose solutions in combating them 4. Manifest the value of respect for cultural diversity with the emphasis on national development, problems in the changing Philippine environment and culture. 5. Create and bring a more positive outlook in life that would enable him to cope easily with everyday challenges and obstacles 6. Appreciate ones culture and practice Filipino values, beliefs and cherished traditions.
