Year/Semester : I Year
Subject : Electronic Components & Devices
Subject Code : EC-105
Major Topic : Resistors
Sub Topic : Features & Classification of
Resistors
Duration : 50 Minutes
Teaching aids : PPT
EC105.2 1
Objectives

On completion of this class you should be able to know

• Features of Resistors

• Laws of Resistance

• Classification of Resistors

EC105.2 2
Features of Resistors:

• Have Two terminals

• Passive Devices

• Bilateral Devices

EC105.2 3
Laws of Resistance:

The Resistance ‘R’ offered by a material depends on

various factors

• Varies directly on its length, l

• Varies inversely on its cross section area, A
• Depends on the nature of the material specified by
its Resistivity or Specific Resistance, ρ
• Also depends on the temperature

EC105.2 4
Assuming that the temperature is constant, the
Resistance (R) can be expressed as
R = ρl / A

Where R is resistance in ohms ( Ω )

l is length in meters
A is area in square meters
ρ is Specific Resistance in Ω-mts

EC105.2 5
Classification of Resistors
Resistors are classified

• Based on the usage / type of working.

• Based on the construction.

• Based on the usage.

• Fixed Resistors – Resistance value fixed.

• Variable Resistors – Resistance value can be changed.

EC105.2 7
Summary

• Resistors are Two terminal, passive, bi-lateral

devices .

• The Resistance value of a material depends on its

physical dimensions.

• Resistors are basically Two types –Fixed Resistors

and variable Resistors
