RECAP

We discussed in previous class about:

. Parallel and Series connection of capacitors

EC105.38 3
Energy stored in a capacitor

a) First Method:

• Consider a capacitor of capacitance ‘C’ Farads charged

from a voltage source of ‘V’ volts.

• Let at any instant of charging, potential difference across

its plates be ‘V’ volts.

EC105.38 4
• By definition it is (V) equal to the work done in shifting

one coulomb of charge from one plate to the other.

• If ‘dq’ is the charge next transferred then the work done

is‘v dq’.

• Which appears as stored energy in the capacitor.

• That is dw=vdq.
EC105.38 5
• Since q = cv.

• dq = cdv

• dw = cv.dv

• Total work done in giving ‘V’ units of potential is

v
• w=
∫0
dw
v

0∫
w= cv.dv = c v2/2

• w = 1/2 cv2

EC105.38 6
• If ‘C’ is in Farads and ‘V’ is in volts.

• Then W = ½ cv2 Joules

• Also w = ½ QV Joules [because Q=CV]

• Or w = Q2/2c Joules [because V=Q/C]
