Use the research process to manage, document, organize, and present information to support a thesis on a teacher-approved topic of student interest. Objectives: Pre-Assess prior knowledge. Create a short story using prior knowledge and creativity. Research pre-reading information about the author, time and context of Macbeth. Materials: Computers WebQuest Thinking Caps Procedures: (15-20 Minutes) Mrs. Graham hands back papers, answers questions, reviews projects from previous unit. (5 Minutes) Brief discussion of expectations, instructions for computer lab. (5 Minutes) Transition to computer lab, students get logged on and prepared for assignment. (35 Minutes) Type and switch creative writing activity. Students begin a short story with the prompt: Write the first paragraph of a story, you must include 3 witches that give a prophecy to the main character. Students will switch computers and begin working on someone elses story with a different prompt: In the next paragraph include someone dying. Students will trade a total of 4 times, and then print out their original stories and read them aloud. (25 Minutes) Students will formulate a scenario in which someone was asking them to compromise their values. They will then construct an argument for or against compromising their values. Assignments: None Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None Assessment of Student Learning: Students will receive a 20 point daily grade for completing and editing the creative writing

activity. Students will receive 5 points for completing the WebQuest.

Alabama Course of Study Standards Met: Literature 3. Analyze British literature for style, audience appeal, cultural significance, and plot structure. 4. Identify literary elements in British literary selections from various genres. 5. Determine word meaning in British literature using word structure and context clues. Objectives: Interpret Shakespeares Macbeth in everyday language. Cooperate with peers to translate Macbeth with group members. Identify the most meaningful passage in Macbeth and apply to students own lives. Materials: Macbeth Paper Writing Utensil Note Cards Procedures: (40 Minutes) Read Act 1 Scenes 1-7 (assign parts to students) (30 Minutes) Group work. Break up into 7 groups. Students will translate Shakespearean language into everyday language with a twist. Each group will select a dialect in which they wish to use in their translation (valley girl, Darth Vader, Soap Opera, Country western, Spanish) Groups must translate at least 25 lines and use each group member. This will allow them to gain a better understanding of what Shakespeare is trying to say because they will read, interpret, and boil down what is important in order to translate it. It will also incorporate creative thinking and possibly allow students to bring their own cultures and dialects into what is normally formal English. (15 Minutes) Groups will read their passages aloud incorporating each group member. (5-10 Minutes) Exit slip, students will write on a note card the quote that has been most impressionable to them thus far, and explain why. Assignments: Exit Slip Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None. Assessment of Student Learning: Students will receive 5 points for participation in group work.

Compare organizational structure, figurative language, and literary devices, including use of paradox, among predominantly British short stories, dram, poetry, essays, and other nonfiction literature. Literature 5. Determine word meaning in British Literature using word structure and context clues. Objectives: Gain perspective of a character by completing a journal entry as that character. Obtain and apply new vocabulary into personal lives. Act as a character in Macbeth and impersonate him/her. Predict what the next scene will consist of. Materials: Macbeth Paper Scripts Character Diary Assignment Handout and Rubric Prediction Handout Procedures: (5 Minutes) Introduce Character Diary Assignment. (Handout) (15 Minutes) Students will select a character and begin writing their first entry for their diary. They will complete a total of 5 entries. (5 Minutes) Introduce vocabulary for Act II. (Stealthy, surfeited, provoke, scruple, predominance. Challenge activity. Students will be challenged to use each of the 5 words at least twice before the next days class. They will write on a note card the sentence they used it in and have their audience initial it. (40 Minutes) Read/Act aloud Act II. Students will be provided with scripts and will stand and act out their parts. (15 Minutes) Make a prediction. Students will be given a blank outline of the first several lines in the next Act. They will make a prediction about the subsequent dialogue in the following action. (Handout) Assignments: Finish prediction handout for homework. Alabama Course of Study Standards Met: Objectives: Construct an image into words using personal connections. Defend a characters actions in a 1st person journal entry. Illustrate and interpret a scene from Macbeth. Materials: Macbeth Free Write Picture Scripts Procedures: (10 Minutes) Free Write. Students will view an image and describe what they think is going on, write about any connections they made between the image and their world, write about how the characters might be feeling.. etc. (15-20 Minutes) Students will work on Character Diary entry #2. (20 Minutes) In groups, students will read one scene from Act III. Each group will be performing one scene, using all group members, students will read, select parts, translate their own characters dialogue and then prepare to perform for the class. (40 Minutes) In groups, students will perform their selected scenes. Other groups have the opportunity to ask questions and get clarifications if needed. Assignments: None Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None Assessment of Student Learning: Students will be awarded 10 points for actively participating and contributing to group activity. Students will be given 5 points for their free write.

Objectives: o Students will access prior knowledge and prepare for a quiz assessment. o Students will read and interpret a selection from Macbeth o Student will create a concept map to demonstrate ability to identify main events. o Students will compose a diary entry as a character from Macbeth. Materials: Paper Writing Utensil Timeline Macbeth Example Diary Entry Computer and Projector Procedures: (10 Minutes) Review Act I (Fill in Timeline) (15-20 Minutes) Act I Quiz (15-20 Minutes) Read translated version of Act II Scenes 3 and 4. (20 Minutes) Students create a concept map/timeline for Act II. (During the review of Act I, students will complete an example timeline that will be given to them; this will be referenced as an example.) (20 Minutes) Students will write a character diary entry. Assignments: Finish timeline and character diary entry if needed. (Show example entry) Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None Assessment of Student Learning: Students will receive 20 participation points for their timeline/concept map. Character diary entry will be counted toward their total assignment. Rubric was given, each entry is worth 5 points.

Materials: Paper Macbeth Writing utensil Concept Map/Timeline Procedures: (15 Minutes) Review Act II. Complete concept map/timeline to prepare for quiz. (15 Minutes) Act II Quiz (30 Minutes) Read Act III Scenes 1 and 2. (20 Minutes) Create a list of 15 questions that you have for Macbeth at this time. (20 Minutes) Exchange questions with a classmate and answer them as you think Macbeth would respond. Assignments: None Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None Assessment of Student Learning: Students will be given 15 points for creating 15 thoughtful questions. They will also be given 15 points for giving 15 thoughtful answers to classmates questions for a total of 30 possible points. Students will be given 20 possible points for Act II Quiz.

o In groups, students will personally interpret selections from Macbeth


o Students will perform their interpretations.

o Students will create a Character Diary entry as a character from Macbeth.


Materials: Macbeth Paper Writing Utensils Procedures: (30 Minutes) Group work Act III Scenes 3-6. Groups will be assigned a character in each scene. They will translate Macbeth into modern language. Each group will select one member to perform their portion along with other groups. (Write specific instructions on board) (25-30 Minutes) Groups will perform their translations. (Any remaining time) Students will begin working on their second character diary entry. Assignments: Complete Character Diary Entry #2 Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None Assessment of Student Learning: Students will be given 10 participation points for completing a thoughtful and accurate translation with their group. Character diary entry will be counted toward their complete assignment.

Objectives: o Students will brainstorm key events from the selection. o Students will create a comic strip to depict the main events in the scene. Materials: Comic Strip Layout Macbeth Procedures: (25 Minutes) Read Act IV Scene 1. (15 Minutes) Class Discussion- Answer questions (think pair share) (20 Minutes) Brainstorm. Students will review events of scene I and select the 10 scenes they think are most important and want to include in their comic strip. They must show the teacher their list of 10 items before they will be allowed to proceed to the next step. (30 Minutes) Students will create a comic strip displaying the action in this scene. (Layout will be given. Assignments: None Accommodations for Students with Special Needs: None Assessment of Student Learning: Students will be given a possible 20 points for their comic strip.
