Accelerated Reader
With the first card marking being behind us, the first deadline for AR tests was Thursday, November 17th. Students were expected to take and pass two AR tests with 80% or better accuracy. Congratulations to all that met this requirement. The next card marking deadline is February 2012, students will be expected to take and pass a minimum of five AR tests with 80% or better accuracy. When we visit the Library every Monday, students will be required to pick at least one book that is at their Just Right Level. Students have been given their level, if there are any questions please do not hesitate to ask. Students should be working on an AR book every week during our 90minute Guided Reading Block until they have passed the five required tests. We suggest having your child read his or her book a couple of times before taking the test. Students are permitted to bring their book(s) home, but must bring them to and from school each day, as most students will be participating in SSR Silent Sustained Reading each day in Room 20.

What have we been up to?

Language Arts & Science: Our second unit in language arts is entitled Thinking Like a Scientist. We have started working on Theme 3, What is Light? The students have also been working on various different investigative activities,(shadow tracing, rainbow observations and demonstrations), which has been integrated as part of the Language Arts and Science curriculum for third grade. During our read aloud time, we have started reading a light hearted fiction novel entitled Chocolate Fever, by Robert Kimmel Smith. Feel free to ask your child about the importance of being a bucket filler, as this novel ties in perfectly with our Positive Behavior Integrated Supports (PBIS), at Scott School. The students will be taking their Reading Test for Theme 3 Week 2 this coming Friday December 9th. In word study the students have been working on words that begin with the ch, sh, wh, etc. prefix. During writing workshop the students have begun learning about the elements of persuasive writing, and have begun completing the process of writing, editing, revising, and publishing persuasive letters to my Labrador Retriever; Bella. Bella will be visiting our classroom sometime tomorrow as a reward for their persuasive writing letters. Math: Room 20 has been working on various forms of graphs and measurement. Students will be working on a special activity, where they are asked to use their knowledge on graphing and chart, so please stay tuned. As always, we encourage the students to continue practicing mathematics concepts using the IXL math at home.

Holiday Outreach
This holiday season, Room 20 along with Mrs. Watersons class will be participating in an outreach event. Both classes will be donating new blankets to families through the Lansing City Rescue Mission. We are asking for any children/adult size new blankets to be donated before Friday, December 16th. In past years our class has adopted-a-family. However, this holiday season we are hoping to try something different by donating new blankets to help out those families who are in need this season. Thank you to all of those who have already made, and will make generous contributions!
