these processes for the project management knowledge areas indicated.

3. Describe different ways to develop a WBS and explain why it is often so
difficult to do so.
Using guidelines Some organizations have guidelines
and templates for developing WBS
Analogy approach Use the WBS f a similar project as a
starting point
Top down approach Start with the largest item of the
project and break it down into
subordinate items (repeat the process
until all the work activities have been
included)
Bottom up approach Begin by listing detailed tasks that are
needed for the work required. Group
and organize the tasks into categories.

Then, group these categories into
higherlevel categories
Mindmapping Use mind maps to develop the WBS
It is often difficult to create a WBS because the project amanger and the project team
must
Understand both the project and its scope and incorporate the needs and
knowledge of the stakeholders
Decide as a group how to organize the work and how many levels to include in
the WBS
Decide on how to organize the WBS so that it procides the basis for the project
schedule – must focus on what needs to be done and how it will be done and not
when it will be done
4. A WBS can be represented in a graphical or tabular format. Create a WBS for
the project to create a web site for your class. For the purpose of this exercise,
show only the details of the testing phase for the project. Use both the
graphical and tabular formats to show the WBS.
