CVG 5132 Assignment 1.

Groundwater containing 50 mg/L of CO2 at 10C is aerated in a fountain aerator where the jet is released through an orifice (Cv = 0.95) at an angle of 60 with the horizontal. Assume droplets of 0.5 cm diameter are formed and that a saturated value of CO2 in water at this temperature is 1.0 mg/L. Calculate the head in the distribution pipe required to achieve a CO2 concentration of 4.0 mg/L in the treated water. Assume that the mass transfer coefficient at this temperature is 300 cm/h (base e). Groundwater containing 50 mg/L of H2S and no oxygen is to be passed through a diffused air aerator 3.0 m deep. A total of 0.75 m3 of air will be used per m3 of water. The rate of water flow is 37 850 m3/d and its detention period in the aerator will be 15 min. and it will be processed in batches (i.e., a tank will be filled and then aerated; ignore gas transfer during the fill and empty periods). The diffuser plates will produce bubbles of 0.3 cm diameter (assumed to be spherical and constant in size) that rise at a uniform velocity of 20 cm/s. Assume that the change in partial pressure of any substance in a gas bubble is insignificant (i.e., Cs remains constant). a. b. c. Find the dissolved oxygen content of effluent based on a mass transfer coefficient of 75 cm/h (base e). Cs = 9.6 mg/L. Find the H2S content of the effluent based on a mass transfer coefficient of 200 cm/h. Assume Cs = 0.5 mg/L. You desire your computations to be more accurate and include the surface area of the tank in your calculations. Assuming that the tank depth remains unchanged, would including the tank surface area result in a decrease in the volume of the tank or gas flow rate or both to achieve the same O2 concentration as calculated in (a)? Assume that the rate of mass transfer at the surface is the same as for a bubble.

2.

In parts (a) and (b) ignore the surface area of the tank in calculating the air-liquid interface area.

3.

Derive the expression for travel time for horizontal flow across a step in a cascade aerator.
