Krishnakumar and Gandham 1 With an Indian cultural background, we were greatly influenced to choose a topic related to our nationality.

Both of us have a majority of our family living on the subcontinent of India. As we were looking through historical figures, our attention immediately fell upon Mohandas Gandhi. Our parents had often mentioned so much about him and his legacy, sometimes going as far as to quoting him. The grandeur surrounding Gandhis accomplishments were overwhelming! We instantly grasped the idea of doing our NHD project on him and his philosophy that changed the world. Upon starting our research, we ordered a copy of Gandhi: The Man, His People and The Empire, a biography written by one of his own descendents. This led us to email the grandson with a few questions of our own. Unfortunately, Rajmohan Gandhi replied that he was too busy to respond to our inquiries. Our next move was searching our high school media center. It proved to be very helpful as we found many primary sources on microfiche. Another informative source was Gandhis own autobiography. We also took time to visit the Central Library located in downtown Tulsa. There, we found numerous secondary sources in reference materials. We felt that our information would be conveyed best through a historical website. Since there are many pictures available of Gandhi, they can be presented well on the web. A digital project also works nicely with organizing the multitude of our deep insight on our topic. The idea of a website also appealed to our technological experiences since we have worked with Weebly before. Our website has a distinct color theme that suits our subject. There is also a timeline incorporated on the home page as an overview. The music we chose will definitely flow with the webpage setup. Titled Mohandas to Mahatma: Gandhis Movement, our historical website is intended to catch the eye at the first glance. Our project on Gandhi fulfills all three concepts stated in the 2012 NHD theme. His revolution was based on protesting in a new manner. His nonviolent beliefs affected others and

Krishnakumar and Gandham 2 eventually led to a physical revolution: the independence of India. There were awed and surprised reactions to his movement. The British could not believe that they were beaten by such simple ideology and Gandhis supporters looked upon him as a savior. Other reactions include disgust because of the harsh treatment the English gave to the innocent rebels. Many protesters were killed even though they did no harm to any of the British subjects. Gandhis followers were part of the lower castes whereas the upper caste Indians just went along with the foreign rule. There was reform both short-term and long. Short-term, the British Empire soon started to crumble as they lost their precious India. On the long-term, leaders later on in history have followed the nonviolence methods in their protesting. One example is Martin Luther King Jr., who was an intimate Gandhi believer. King later led on to establish reform in racial indifference. (500 Words)
