Grade 3 Weekly Update Week of January 23, 2012

Unit of Inquiry Thanks to the parents who chaperoned our trip last Wednesday! Thanks also to the parents who volunteered to come, but did not due to space limitations. At times we are limited by the bus, other times by the facility. The museum did not allow us to bring more than 3 adults per class due to a 25 per exhibit maximum. The students enjoyed the trip and learned about different art. We are so excited for the Art Exhibition next Thursday (February 2nd)! If you are available, please join us at 8:30 in the Heizhaus that morning. The students are eager to show the efforts off their hard work! Later this week or the beginning of next week we will begin practice the talking points that the students will present to their audiences. As a reminder, your child should be dressed as their artist. Feel free to use your imagination if an artist picture is not available. It should be something that they can change into and out of quickly on their own. On the 2nd the students should come already dressed for the show, but they should bring clothes for recess if necessary. We will be finishing up our artist reports in language arts. We will also be working on editing skills, and reviewing editing symbols. The word processing makes things easier and harder. Some classes will continue to work on inferences. All classes will focus on writing by working on individual projects as soon as research reports are finished. Looking forward, the children are creating many different kinds of poetry in addition to reading poems. Division! Division! Division! We are using literature, games, money and many other hands on activities to explore the concept of division. Continued work on facts, especially multiplication, will help with accuracy. The facts do not have to be memorized (but +/- should be at this point). Please practice with your child daily.

Save the date: Thursday, February 2- Grade 3 Art Exhibit- Parents are strongly encouraged to attend the opening at 8:30-9:00 (but if you cant make it until later in the day, please come when you can!). This will take place in the Heizhaus. Your child will present as the artist or culture s/he has chosen. Some sort of costume is requested- it does not have to be much.
