COURSE DESCRIPTION Social Studies 10-1 explores multiple perspectives on the origins of globalization and the local, national and international impacts of globalization on identity, lands, cultures, economies, human rights and quality of life. The key issue to be examined in Social Studies 10-1 is: TO WHAT EXTENT SHOULD WE EMBRACE GLOBALIZATION? This will require students to understand, evaluate and respond to the complexities of globalization in the 21st century. UNITS OF STUDY There are four related issues and corresponding general outcomes in this course: Exploration of the Issue: To what extent should globalization shape identity? -You will explore how globalization impacts each individual personally. For example, how has the use of technology such as the internet and cell phones enabled citizens of different nationalities and cultures to connect with one another? 2. Historical Background: To what extent should contemporary society respond to the legacies of historical globalization? -You will assess impacts of historical globalization on indigenous and nonindigenous peoples. For example, what are the present-day implications of the residential school system and disputes over land claims for Canadas First Nations people? 3. Contemporary Considerations: To what extent does globalization contribute to sustainable prosperity for all people? -You will assess economic, environmental, and other contemporary aspects of globalization. For instance, should developing nations be required to balance their economic development with consideration for the environment? 4. Developing Personal and Societal Responses: To what extent should I, as a citizen, respond to globalization? -You will assess your personal roles and responsibilities as a citizen of a globalized world. For instance, to what extent should Canadian citizens concern themselves with the plight of people in other nations who may be affected by pandemics, human rights abuses, gender inequalities, etc? 1.
