DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES (CEL718) DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DELHI

Course Project
Notes: (i) Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary. (ii) Submit a report with detailed calculations of analysis and design with suitable sketches (iii) All referred sources must be duly acknowledged in a separate reference section. (iv) Analysis of structures using SAP 2000 is recommended. (v) Use relevant Indian codes wherever applicable for loading, design, etc.

Problem Statement:
A two-bay three-storey steel moment framed structure 12 mx 12m in plan and 12 m high is located in Delhi. The structure consisted of composite floor slab of thickness of 300 mm (Concrete). All columns are of box sections (500 mmx500 mmx16 mm). Indian Standard rolled ISMB 600 sections are used as main beams. The structure is subjected to following loads: Dead load: Self-weight of members Live load: 5 kN/m2 Wind load data: v = 47 m/s (k1 = k3 = 1, k2 = 1.05) Earthquake load data: I = 1.0; R = 4; Soft soil condition

ELEVEATION

a) Analysis case-I : Rigid beam-column connections & fixed column bases (i) Conduct first-order and second-order elastic analysis of the plane frames (ii) Conduct first-order and second order nonlinear static analysis of the plane frames (iii) Conduct first-order and second order nonlinear time-history analysis of the plane frames for any three recorded ground motions (Note: Modelling of material, members, etc. must be clearly mentioned in the report) b) Analysis case II: Pinned beam-column connections & elastic column bases (i) Conduct first-order and second-order elastic analysis of the plane frames c) Design case (i) Design the entire frame as per IS: 8002007 provisions for fixed base and suggest secondary beams, if required. (ii) Check the safety of one of the columns and one of the main beams
