BRUSHLESS EXCITATION

THE BACKBONE OF ALTERNATOR ABSTRACT:

Generator excitation system is one of the most maintenance intensive subsystem in power plants. The exciter is the backbone of generator control system. It is the power source that supplies the DC magnetising current to field winding ultimately inducing a voltage in armature. The amount of excitation required to maintain the output voltage constant is a function of the generator load. As the generator load increases, the amount of excitation increases. So in order to maintain constant output voltage the amount of excitation voltage should be proper. The Field excitation is provided by a standard brushless excitation system, which consists of a rotating armature, diode bridge and stationary field. With the advent of mechanically robust silicone diode capable of converting A.C. to D.C. at a high power levels, brushless excitation system has become popular and being employed. The brushless excitation system eliminates periodic brush and collector ring maintenance and replacement, reduces brush drop, spark, noise & friction loss. This is a presentation on excitation system and the advantage of brushless excitation over all the existing excitation schemes of an alternator, and its maintenance.
