Whether its your kids, your relationship, your career or a hobby on which you like to spend all your spare time, feeling passionate about something is a strong motivator for realizing success. The man featured on our cover, Troy Reissmann, is passionate about healthy lawn care. The Valley Organics owners mission is to save the planet, one lawn at a time. It sounds like a lofty goal, but he believes its possible. With equal parts perseverance and perspiration, along with a lot of help from his wife and three children, Reissmann truly believes that someday everyone will realize that customized, organic lawn treatments are a better alternative to traditional chemical-based services. Im passionate about a few things right now, not the least of which is spring and warmer weather. Weve endured a lot this winter and a change is welcome. Im also pretty passionate about trying to live healthier. For the past couple months, Ive been trying to eat more consciously. That is, pay more attention to the nutritional value of the food I eat, and watch my portion sizes. That ties in with my other health goal, which is running a half marathon in May. I have found that having an event on the calendar (and a paid registration) are two big motivators in helping me to keep my eyes on the prize, as it were. But do I expect an actual prize for running 13.1 miles? No. My goal is to simply finish and enjoy the experience with friends who will also be running. If I accomplish that, Ill be happy.
With that, Id like to encourage you to find your passion. Then cultivate it, nurture it and watch it grow. Youll be amazed by all that you can accomplish. Peace,
Jen

Id get a commission. If not, they would go to another call program to be pestered in about a month. If the customer said yes, but to a smaller program, they would be called continuously after each round to upgrade their program. They would also get called for spring aerations, fall aerations with over-seeding, fall aerations without over-seeding, winterizing, tree and shrub programs, grub programs and finally insect control programs. If you do the math on that, it can be as many as 13 separate calls to upgrade and thats if you pick up the phone. Once your number is in their system, it continually loops until you pick up the phone. I remember calling the same person 20 times a day, six days a week! After a sale or up sell was made, the call would go over to an auditor and he or she would call you back to confirm the order! The sales manager was no dummy. If the customer refused to pick up, he would ask you to call them on your personal cell phone to trick them into answering. Needless to say, it was awful. I couldnt wait until the door-to-door sales started,
just to get away from that stale office. Im not a big fan of pestering customers, or any people for that matter. I know how you feel about cold calls, I feel the same way. The funny thing is, if you sign up for the Do Not Call Registry, they can still bother you. You have to tell them to take you off their list before they legally have to comply. Now, lets say you fired them, and then got on the Do Not Call Registry. You would think youre safe, right? Wrong! Last year they started sending salesmen door to door, specifically to those customers they can no longer reach legally by phone! It seems like that would be illegal, but its not. Trust me, I checked it out with the Department of Consumer Affairs. Its great to have a nice looking lawn, but at what cost? The chemicals and pesticides they use are dangerous, and something Ive talked about at length. The high pressure sales gimmicks they use are horrible. You deserve better. You can get that healthy, green lawn, without dangerous chemicals. Youve just got to give me a call because Im not going to call you. At least not like they do. Together we can save the

By Cheryl Larson ugar is NOT an essential nutrient for pets. Too much of it can lead to serious health problems such as obesity, tooth decay and diabetes. Obese and older animals are more likely to develop diabetes, and all breeds are susceptible. Sugar and high-carbohydrate diets are also linked to hyperactivity, kidney, urinary and pancreatic problems, cataracts, arthritis, allergies and Candida yeast (including yeast ear infections). Why would sugar be added to the diet of
carnivores? Carnivores get all the sugar they need from the small amount of vegetables in their natural diet. Sugar is added because it is addictive! Your pet craves meat and vegetables, but can become addicted to the
sugar in poor-quality diets and treats. Your pet gobbles up the sugar quickly causing you to buy more. The addiction can make it very difficult to switch your pet over to a highquality diet as your pet may hold out for the sugar fix. Fortunately, that is a temporary problem. Once your pet is hungry and tries the new food, they will love the taste of real food again. Pet food companies have been sneaking increasing amounts of sugar into food in recent years. Poor quality rules the marketplace. Take a close look at the ingredient lists in your grocery store or large chain pet store. Species appropriate human-grade ingredients account for less than 10 percent of commercial pet diets. Treats sold by pet food giants are even less nutritious. The troubling reality is that pet food marketed for the masses is produced for profit. By creating an addiction, the giants know that you will buy that brand over and over again. The following is a list of ingredients to avoid when purchasing your pets food: Cane molasses A by-product of the manufacture of sucrose from sugar cane. Added to make pet food more

attractive. Corn syrup Prepared from cornstarch, used in numerous food products as a sweetener. Unnecessary in pet foods. Fructose A very sweet sugar. Used as a preservative. Sorbitol Used as a flavoring agent, sugar substitute and a moisturizer in cosmetics. Sugar May include sucrose, cane sugar, caramel, corn syrup and others. Sugar is also naturally present in starches and grains. These carbohydrates differ significantly in levels of natural sugar. Dry pet food contains either grain or starch, not
because of the nutritional level, but because it makes the kibble stick together. Grainfree diets offer an array of options for this purpose. Remember, you are looking for carnivore-appropriate, low-natural sugar and carbohydrate and gluten-free food.

ith childhood obesity epidemics on the rise, many parents and healthcare providers are concerned about the dietary habits of children. However, many parents to toddlers or even school-aged children may wonder if their children are eating enough. Children often go through periods of finicky eating or disinterest in food. It is not uncommon to have a child who eats a wide variety of foods when he is younger only to dislike the same foods a year or two later. Most doctors say that if a child is growing and active, chances are that he is healthy and getting enough food. If the opposite is true, there may be some cause for concern. Parents should consult the childs pediatrician if eating habits seem to be compromising their childs growth or energy levels. There are estimates that a young child should eat about a tablespoon of food for each year of the childs age. Therefore, a 3-yearold should be getting at least 3 tablespoons of food. If the child is

interested in more food, certainly offer it. If he pushes food away after eating, dont force more on him. Most children should have 3 meals and 2 snacks per day. Toddlers may not eat enough in one meal to remain full until the next meal. Small, healthy snacks of vegetables, whole-grain crackers or low-fat dairy products can help take the edge off of hunger. food before the child becomes accustomed to its taste and texture. It may be a good idea to offer a variety of new foods together with something he already enjoys eating. Its also common for kids to only eat one type of food over and over again. Dont worry that the child is not getting enough nutrition. Chances are he will grow out of this stage and soon enjoy a variety of foods. Threats or punishments to eat will only serve to cause a poor relationship with food, advise childhood experts. Also, dont bribe a child to eat with the reward of a snack or dessert later on. This sets a poor example of eating and could lead to behavioral problems. Many children develop finicky eating habits. However, as long as a youngster is growing regularly and has plenty of energy for daily activities, theres a good chance that the foods being eaten are not interfering with health.

touch or direct our energy toward. This higher vibration, and the speed at which it radiates into the world of form must heal by the virtue of it being higher in vibration. Our light/love/energy will always raise a lower vibration to a higher level. This is what you call healing. Light is a higher vibration than dark, so when you flip the light on in a dark room, the light floods the room and the darkness disappears. We say that illness is like darkness. The act of extending healing from one being to another through your thoughts, prayers, and hands-on healing/energy techniques, is an act of love, of sharing light, and giving healing. We are this higher vibration that is intricately interwoven with
loving, healing intention that fires-up dark places. We are love-in-action. We are called healers because that is the result of our intention and touch. I asked, Where are the angels when a person does not get well? and they said, We say to you, do not judge what occurs in the physical, for you cannot see the entire panorama from the tiny portal from which you look. Sometimes a person may not heal because his life on Earth is concluded, his mission accomplished, as it were. We say to you, always remember there are no accidents and nothing happens outside of Divine Order. The Earth plane is like a schoolhouse set up by your Higher Self for you to open your heart to experience a wide array of feelings and emotions. And, you are not without personal power
The word angel comes from the Greek word angelos which means messenger. i use the term angel to identify the source of the inner voice of wisdom and guidance i intuitively receive. i do not intend to alienate anyone whose terminology may differ from my own. on this plane. Your words have power. Ask for healing and it is given to you, however, it may come in a way you dont expect, but always comes as a part of a greater plan. Remain open to travel the road where it leads you. Be mindful that your guardian angels never leave their posts, as it were, and they keep an eye on you and on Divine Will for you. We see the path you walk and we guide you in making wise choices along the way. We never take control but may nudge you to change the course youre on to divert unnecessary disaster. Be open and listen! It is our wish to alleviate the pain humanity feels it must endure for lack of another alternative. Nourish your goal of being completely healed, whole, and filled with joy. Hear us knocking on your door and know that we stand by ready to serve. Simply be willing, reach to us, and we are there.

European science
Its fairly well-known that most people dont get the omega-3s they need from their diets. To make up the difference, a lot of people try to get their omega-3s through fish oil. The benefits of omega-3s for heart disease, cancer, depression, inflammation, arthritis pain, and more make fish oil seem like a natural choice. But it isnt. While fish oil has been recommended for generations, it really isnt that natural. By the time the oil is bottled, it has been processed (you could say over-processed) so much that it bears little resemblance to the omega-3 fatty acids you would get from eating fish. This is something that has bothered me for some time, but luckily, theres a better way to get omega-3s in supplement form. Not long ago I discovered a better, safer, and more bioavailable source of omega-3 fatty acids. This supplement uses a new European breakthrough in omega-3 science that creates many advantages over the oil-form of omega-3s. This new process is the closest thing you can get to eating salmon (without eating salmon). Using a patented, gentle, cold water and enzyme process to extract naturally occurring marine phospholipids with the omega-3 fatty
Natures Pathways | April 2011
Most fish oils are extracted from small, cold water fish, including: sardines, anchovies, herring, and other mixed fish. Then the fish undergo a lot of processing. The cooling and pressing steps, for example, bring the raw material close to boiling and coagulate the naturally-occurring proteins in the fish. This creates its own problems, as it requires large quantities of solvents (hexane and methanol to name two of them), and the need to reprocess the toxic waste that this method generates. But this heat method also changes the position of the fatty acids as well. Rather than being where nature intended them, on the sn-2 position on the carrier chain, the damaging heat-and-solvent method displaces the fatty acids to the sn-1 and sn-3 positions.1, 2 This might not sound like much, but if you think about it, small changes can be enormously important. These structural changes mean that the EPA and DHA are no longer bioidentical to those in the human body. Because the EPA and DHA in fish oils are carried by 20

triglycerides, rather than phospholipids, people need very large doses of fish oil to get good results usually several grams. Unfortunately, the problem with that approach is that fish oil doesnt sit well in many peoples stomachs. They experience gastric discomfort, bad aftertaste, and fish burps. Until recently, thats what everyone has had to deal with because thats the nature of fish oil supplements. The good news is that the oils delivered omega-3s that your body greatly needs; the bad news is that it takes a huge amount of oil to do it, and oils are very unstable and often quite rancid. Initially, absorption of phospholipid-bound omega-3 fatty acids from salmon was documented in a scientific report from the University of Nancy in France, which also incorporated data from an earlier 2004 study.3,4 The absorption levels of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil were compared to omega-3 fatty acids using this specialized process. The study used the gold standard, validated test of gastrointestinal absorption, called a CACO-2 study. What the researchers found was that these phospholipid-bound essential fatty acids were absorbed 5 times (or 500 percent) more than the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. This five-fold increase in absorption is in itself quite respectable. Researchers then looked at the incorporation of these essential fatty acids in the calls and found a remarkable difference between fish oil and this specialized omega-3 bound to phospholipids (fish oil = <1 vs. phospholipid-bound
omega-3s = 40). In examining these statistics, they computed that this was an average of 50 times greater omega-3 fatty acid absorption over fish oil.5 Certainly, both phospholipids and triglycerides can act as carriers for omega-3 fatty acids. There have been many positive studies and results using fish oils. But I think the question remains: is there a safer, more convenient way for people to incorporate DHA and EPA into their daily regimen? Without a doubt, the omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil have achieved remarkable things. After all, essential fatty acids (EFAs) are integral to the membrane of cells, holding them together and protecting them against invaders. Essential fatty acids are also used to make hormone-like substances called eicosanoids, which regulate the secretion of hormones and digestive juices and influence the way cells divide and grow. Eicosanoids are responsible for both inhibiting blood clotting, and helping promote it when its necessary, such as after an injury. Plus, EPA and DHA from fish oil improve heart health and blood profiles, relieve pain through anti-inflammatory action, enhance immunity, elevate mood, and alleviate the symptoms of ADHD, diabetes, skin diseases, menstrual pain, and more. In fact, one of the most important uses of DHA is the promotion of brain and vision development in infants and children.6,7 This neurological connection has led to research involving fish oil fatty acids in the treatment of Alzheimers disease and depression.6,8-9 And for this, the increased

bioavailability of phospholipid-bound omega-3s poses some exciting possibilities for neurological health. In an in vitro study published in the Journal of Neurochemistry, researchers pre-treated rat neuronal cells with DHA from this phospholipid-bound omega-3 source for 48 hours before exposing these cells to soluble oligomers of amyloid betapeptide, which are known to cause the brain cell damage associated with Alzheimers.10 The study had an intriguing result: the DHA pretreatment greatly increased neuronal survival and reduced damage. The researchers concluded that Such neuroprotective effects could be of major interest in the prevention of Alzheimers and other neurodegenerative diseases.10 And, as for cardiovascular health, in a human open clinical trial, 40 healthy volunteers took two tablets of the specialized phospholipidbound omega-3 fatty acids per day without any modifications to diet or exercise habits. (I would recommend altering both, too.) However, after 60 days, the participants saw their triglyceride levels drop by 16 percent, their total cholesterol decrease by 10 percent, and their HDL levels the good cholesterol increase by 13 percent!11 Those are extremely impressive results, considering there were no lifestyle changes here. While I believe that the pseudo-science linking high cholesterol to heart disease is a myth, I do strongly believe that cholesterol must be in balance for good health, with an excellent ratio of LDL to HDL cholesterol. Raising HDL cholesterol has a profound impact on preventing heart attacks and heart disease, regardless of your total number. Getting these components into everyones daily regimens is 87

There are few restaurants in the Fox Cities that offer many organic or vegetarian options on their menus. Johnathans Italian Bistro is the exception. This casual yet elegant eatery offers a variety of healthy entrees, from organic salmon, homemade vegetarian meat substitutes and grass-fed beef, to homemade pastas, among other delicious dishes for the health-conscious diner. Owners Kerry and Rick Gasman focus on homemade foods. Nothing they offer comes from a bag or is pre-made. As you know, vegetarians can sometimes struggle to find entre options that arent meat-based. But at Johnathans anything on the menu, whether it is a sausage, chicken or seafood option, can be replaced with a vegetarian meat. Our diner has been to Johnathans numerous times and replaced every pasta and/ or risotto option with vegetarian chicken or meatballs, which her guests enjoyed as much as she did. On this particular evening, our diners started off with the bruschetta, an appetizer of which they are big fans in general. However, Johnathans version features fresh tomatoes, fresh

(Confession: Johnathans starts all diners with homemade breads and an olive oil/ balsamic dipping sauce, so while an additional appetizer may not be necessary, it sure tastes great!) For entres, one diner ordered the Formaggio Penne. It features homemade penne (homemade makes all the difference), grilled organic chicken breast, sauted wild mushrooms, onions, house-made threecheese cream sauce topped with toasted bread crumbs. He said the food was so delicious; he almost wished he was alone so he didnt have to talk while he ate! It truly is that good! Our other diner ordered the Spicy Sausage Buccatini and replaced the sausage with vegetarian sausage. The vegetarian sausage tasted so much like real meat that she had her guest taste it to compare. With the little bit of spice and the request for added wild mushrooms, she felt like shed died and gone to heaven. Another favorite of hers:
the Wild Mushroom Risotto with Vegetarian Chicken to replace the duck breast. For those who are limiting carbohydrate intake, there are plenty of options including the hugely popular Organic Salmon, Fontina Stuffed Pork Chops, Seabass and Ribeye, to name a few. Although it will be a challenge, our diners advise you save room for dessert at Johnathans. The house-made Tiramisu is to die for, according to our diners. We couldnt leave without enjoying the $10 bottomless wine options and purchasing a VIP card for just $5 which allows you to build up points to use toward future meals, half price bottles of wine on certain days and buy one/get one free lunches Monday thru Friday. For those dining with children, Johnathans also offers a 12 and under childrens menu. Also of note, Johnathans proudly supports and uses products from local companies including The Olive Cellar, Manderfields Bakery and Fava Tea Co. (all of Appleton), Belgioioso Cheese (Denmark), Victor Allen Coffee (Little Chute), and, in season, Park Ridge Organic (Fond du Lac). It also serves Meyer Natural Angus, which is born, humanely raised, fed and processed in the U.S. without hormones and is fed an organic, vegetarian diet.

each person there understands what they are expected to do and that they are capable of accomplishing those tasks. This makes the Shiner Center a good vocational fit for Jeff and his approximately 150 team members. It was just over three years ago that Jungwirth was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He was working with his county case manager to find a job setting that would be both challenging and supportive. After placing a call to Joe Thibodeau, Leader of Work Services at Goodwill, a tour was arranged. I liked it right away, Jungwirth said. A few days later, he took his place in Goodwills Contractivity department and began to make an immediate difference. Bipolar disorder is a tough challenge to deal with but, as Jungwirth says, I have a good team at home and a good team at work.

Tina Schaffert, Industrial Contracts Floor Leader at the Shiner Center, notes that Jungwirth has mastered 14 different jobs within Contractivity. My work schedule right now is pretty much perfect, he said. Every day, I keep track of how much work I got done so that I can try to do more the next day. A special talent that Jungwirth brings to his workplace is that of being a community maker. Wells observes that he regularly takes
moments out of the day to check in with co-workers about how they are doing. My co-workers are great, and I really get along well with them, Jungwirth said. Im really happy to have a job. I appreciate it. According to Wells, Jeff s work ethic and patience with others truly make him an outstanding achiever. Each month, Goodwill NCW selects a volunteer or a program participant like Jungwirth for its Outstanding Achiever recognition. The honorees come from one of Goodwills 22 store communities, its Menasha campus or its Ralph B. Shiner Center in Appleton. Keith Wilk, COO of Programs & Services at Goodwill NCW, said this award is a means for recognizing the strides that our program participants have made, in part, because of the services provided through our Goodwill. By Karmen Nenahlo Question: Ive been following a high-protein diet, but I recently read something about this adversely affecting my kidneys. I plan to ask my doctor about this, but do you know of any correlation? Answer: Good question, and one that used to come up pretty frequently when high-protein diets were all the rage. There are essentially two different scenarios that we need to address here. The first one involves those with a pre-existing kidney condition. In this instance, following a high-protein diet, and specifically the induction phases of some of the most popular programs, can lead to a steeper decline in function. For these individuals, highprotein diets are not recommended. The second scenario involves people with normal kidney function. There isnt any research indicating that high-protein diets negatively impact these folks, but theres an important caveat here that we cant ignore. How do you know if you have normal kidney function? Do you really know if your kidneys are working as well as they should be? Many with renal insufficiency (an early condition of declining function) are
asymptomatic, and completely unaware of the potential for problems down the road. And, unfortunately, most folks dont see a doctor before starting a high-protein diet. Therefore, if youve committed to losing weight with this type of regimen, it might be a good idea to get your labs checked. Question: I know stretching is incredibly important, but someone told me not to stretch before working out. This doesnt sound right to me at all. Can you clarify? Answer: Whoever told you this is pretty smart. We all grew up with the notion that stretching prior to exercise would loosen up our muscles and help prevent injuries; however, recent research has proven otherwise. It is now generally accepted that doing static stretches prior to

a workout will likely make you slower and weaker during your exercise sessions, and might actually increase your risk for injury. Your best bet would be to do some active, sport-specific movements beforehand to adequately prepare your muscles for work. Then, you can focus on stretching after your workout, when your muscles are warm and much more elastic. Question: Ive noticed that sugar alcohols appear on the labels of some of my favorite foods. What are they, and do I need to count them as traditional sugars when tracking my calories and carbohydrates? Answer: Sugar alcohols are basically hydrogenated carbohydrates, and are often used to replace table sugar in a wide variety of foods. In general, they are not as sweet as regular sugars and typically contain fewer calories as well. This is because they are incompletely absorbed in the small intestine, which makes them popular additions to many different diet and diabetic foods. On average, sugar alcohols provide about two calories per gram consumed, as opposed to traditional sugars, which provide 4 calories per gram. Its important to note that some of them (sorbitol and mannitol specifically) can cause gastrointestinal upset in high doses, but people can also develop a tolerance to these issues over time. Some sugar alcohols are classified as food additives, while others have been given GRAS status by the FDA, which means they are Generally Recognized as Safe. The most common sugar alcohols include sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol, mannitol and erythritol.

by simply doing nothing, you benefit by centering yourself and moving inward. The world is overwhelmingly about the external factors. It doesnt mean individually we have to follow suit especially not 24/7. Retreating with people you know enhances the relationships and trust. I conduct reflection and journaling workshops at bed and breakfast locations, company functions, speaking engagements, conferences, etc. with various groups of people. The individuals collectively grow in trust, openness and appreciation for each other, themselves and overall life while getting away from their day-today responsibilities. If you are offered the choice, I invite you to consider such an experience in the comfort of a bed and breakfast or a lake cottage. Surround yourself with comforting things to aid in letting your guard down and fully immersing yourself in the experience. The company you keep may be personal and/or professional contacts both offer bonding and growth opportunities. Think of a time when you escaped with that special person: friend, family member, significant other. What feelings come up for you as you mentally return to that experience? What was your happiness level on a scale of one to 10? How does that compare to your happiness level today in the midst of your day-to-day?
Each day I practice a retreat for my own personal reflection and peace of mind. Its never the same time of day nor the same approach. Sometimes its a gotta do it now before I bite someones head off kind of retreat. Im human and it happens. Ive learned to recognize my personal cues that notify me that Im out of sync and unbalanced. Its a sign that Im operating out of fear instead of love. Just like a nutritional detox, I also recognize the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual benefits of treating myself to a multiple-day or weekend retreat. Ive learned that treating or tending to my needs isnt a guilty pleasure its a form of self-care. 1. Comfortable is best practice what speaks to you in an environment appropriate for you 2. Escape to the freedom from your responsibilities even for 10 minutes a day 3. Let your hair down keeping your guard up is a sign of fear, letting go is a sign of love 4. Connect with others make it a social opportunity, especially if youre uncomfortable 5. Reconnect with yourself remind yourself of what brings you love,

Lightness take the pressure off of your shoulders and de-stress 8. Balance center yourself, smile, and rejuvenate your family, friends, and coworkers will observe a happier, healthier you upon your return even if it was just in the other room for 10 minutes 9. Credit cards/debt
Its wise to have a debt reduction plan and spring is a great time to evaluate how youre doing with debt reduction. Credit card debt should be the first to go as revolving credit card debt can be very expensive. Theres no better investment than to be debt free. Do you have a will or trust? Create or update a will or trust; consider a living will and financial power of attorney; toss old documents. If you dont yet have a will, its time to buckle down and draw one up. If youve got any property at all, a home, a car, a flat-screen TV, or jewelry with real or sentimental value, a will can help make sure it gets to the right person upon your passing, and it can help prevent a lengthy probate process. As youre working on a will, also consider drawing up a financial power of attorney document, which specifies a trustworthy person to control your finances if you become too sick to handle them on your own. A living will, also commonly included in these types of documents, is helpful to specify your wishes if youre unable to communicate them because of illness. Once youve finished drawing up these documents, dont just shelve them indefinitely. An annual review remains important because when your life changes, the parameters of your will may need to change too. Consolidate accounts, rebalance and update beneficiaries. Diligent saving and good investment decisions are a key to helping you build wealth and retire comfortably, but its easy to get bogged down with too many details and accounts. Consolidating accounts is one key to reducing your stress. A suggestion would be moving old 401(K) accounts into the one at your current job or moving them into a self-directed IRA. If you are happy with where your accounts are, an annual rebalancing is a smart idea. Even if you planned your initial investments wisely from the start, big gains or losses over time can skew your portfolio. After a few years, your ratio of investments may have shifted significantly, resulting in a portfolio far more aggressive or conservative than you intended. Get new quotes for car, home and life insurance policies: update beneficiaries. As you are shopping around, be sure you are sufficiently covered. If youve done significant renovations or additions to your house and havent revised the policy, be sure to take those upgrades into account. Give your life insurance policies a second look if youve had a major life change. A new baby might warrant increased coverage, for example, while a divorce or death might require a beneficiary change. Always remember that if you renew or change any policies, shred old documents.

...this breakthrough is based on a body of research that demonstrates that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly and permanently destroyed.
What makes the CoolSculpting procedure different is that it uses advanced cooling technology to target fat cells through a gradual process that does not harm surrounding tissues. Based on science developed by the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, this breakthrough is based on a body of research that demonstrates that fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlessly and permanently destroyed. Starting several weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a process called apoptosis and begin to shrink and disappear. The body proceeds to naturally and gradually eliminate the cooled fat cells, reducing the thickness of the fat layer. Unlike traditional liposuction, this procedure is non-invasive with no needles or surgical incisions. The patient and their boardcertified doctor select the area(s) to be treated. For example, if the patients goal is to reduce his or her love handles, the doctor will position the system on the patients side. During the procedure, an applicator is applied to the skin surface to deliver controlled cooling to target fat cells. The device then draws the bulge up between two cooling panels. The sensation is a firm tug and pull to ensure the selected tissue will be cooled most efficiently. The patient feels a sensation of intense cold, which soon dissipates. The entire process takes one to two hours and the patient can return to normal activities after treatment. As the fat cells cool, they begin a process of natural removal. The fat cells in the treated area are gradually eliminated through the bodys normal metabolic processes. The result is a reduction in fat that is visible in about two to four months. On average, each of these procedures results in a 22 percent reduction of fat in the treated area. As long as the patient maintains regular diet and exercise, the long-term results should remain stable. The ideal candidates for this treatment are healthy but have body fat distribution theyre not happy with. The procedure is effective, especially on resistant localized areas such as back fat, love handles and the isolated belly fat. CoolSculpting is an exciting new approach that is non-invasive and has shown significant results in clinical studies for removing fat without the potential risks and downtime of invasive procedures, said Dr. David Janssen, board-certified plastic surgeon with Fox Valley Plastic Surgery.

From a spiritual level it would seem that the natural path of spiritual growth would include a transformation of the self. But dont tell me we need a law mandating more efficient cars; that would be a sacrifice! We think we dont want to sacrifice, but sacrifice is exactly what were doing by perpetuating problems that only get worse; were sacrificing our money, sacrificing what is big and permanent, to prolong what is small, temporary and harmful. Were sacrificing animals, peace and children to retain wastefulness while enriching those who disdain us. This is my new favorite quote by Carl Safina, founding president of Blue Ocean Institute, when talking about protecting the earth as being a moral issue. With the 41st anniversary of Earth Day coming up on April 22, environmental news may creep back into the media outlets, if only for a few weeks. But the bigger question remains: Do we have a moral obligation to protect the earth? A recently published book, Moral Ground: Ethical Action for a Planet in Peril, dives into this issue with excerpts from more than 80 writers, leaders, visionaries and activists from around the world. My simple question is, How do we teach people to care? To care about their health, their childrens health, the health of their community and the health of the planet? If one must teach these things, is it a battle we can even win? Doesnt caring for one another and the earth just come naturally? Either we have it or we dont.
I tend to side with the thoughts of Alan Weisman, a Laureate professor of journalism and Latin American studies at the University of Arizona. Rather than trying to appeal to reason or higher values things that most people either dont grasp or care about, or too often simply ignore I suggest we appeal to greed and selfishness, Weisman says. It simply takes too long to change enough peoples minds and hearts to make them act out of obligation to a good greater than themselves. Not that it isnt worth trying. But if we put all our best efforts into raising the masses consciousness regarding the eco errors of their ways, the planet will likely be destroyed long before weve swayed a majority. Weisman goes on to say that self-interest is the lowest common denominator for all of us. For purely selfish reasons, everyone alive has a stake in fixing what ails the planet right now, because the futures already upon us. Even traditionally conservative religions are starting to transform their thinking that this great earth created by God deserves a voice in its repair. Since the late 1990s, most major faith-based organizations in the U.S. have announced an environmental commitment to do their part in greening the planet. The eco-religious movements are being fueled by the youth of this country, including groups like the Eco-Chaplaincy Initiative, based at a Mennonite seminary in West Virginia; the Evangelical Environmental Network; and the Evangelical Climate Initiative. Tens of thousands of youth are flocking to creation care, a

movement in which Christians believe that they are directed by God and mandated by the Bible to be stewards of the earth and its creatures. This makes sense, and I say its high time religious and environmental groups work together to create and act upon initiatives for the betterment of our one and only planet earth. It should never be about one religion against another or one political group against another. It also should not be just about symbolic gestures on Earth Day like picking up litter for two hours or planting a dozen trees. It needs to go much deeper than a few volunteer hours. We can all improve our daily lives by making better choices in the things we buy, where we buy them and looking beyond just the price tag. We need to respect the air we breathe and the soil we walk upon the same way we should respect each and every homo sapien, because the earth is an extension of us (or is it the other way around?); everything truly is connected. So, lets not just celebrate Earth Day one day of the year. Make it a year-long celebration. Make it a religious holiday. Make it a political event. Make it all about you. In the end, it doesnt matter. We just have to agree that we do indeed have a moral obligation to protect the earth.

By Linda Heimermann orking with pendulums is one of the most popular forms of divination connecting with your own higher consciousness to ask questions and get answers about issues and challenges in your life. The pendulum is one of the easiest tools you can use. For thousands of years pendulums have been used for dowsing, foretelling the future, seeking answers to nagging questions and healing. A pendulum is one of the simplest and easiest tools for divination. Its a matter

of yes or no questions being asked and answered. Although you can purchase pendulums ranging from about $15 - $60, its not hard to make one of your own. Typically, most people use a crystal or gem stone, but you can use any object thats got a bit of weight to it and ends with a point. Fasten your object to a length of string or chain about four to six inches long so that the object swings freely and easily on the end. Begin with an open mind by letting go of whatever you want to hear for an answer, or whatever you think the answer should be to your questions. Gently center yourself like you would going into a meditation or prayer. Clear your mind and make sure your surroundings are quiet and free of distractions. Set the intention to connect with your inner wisdom, your high self, your higher consciousness. Ask for protection and guidance from the Divine Source or God of your understanding. Create a pattern for your answers: movement in this direction means yes and movement in this direction means no and movement like this means maybe or cant answer the question the way you worded it. Then practice with some obvious questions and answers about the day of the week it is, your age, the color of something
you are wearing until you feel confident that you can get the correct answers in the movements of the pendulum. Finally, work on your list of questions you want to dowse about and give yourself the time it takes to get the answer and to write it down. Always be gentle and patient with yourself. Many people use divination to develop their own intuitive wisdom when they are looking for spiritual grounding and guidance in resolving issues and conflicts. They experience better decision making and can learn how to use this discernment process to improve their health, prosperity, relationships, and almost everything going on in their life experience. Anyone can learn how to use a pendulum. With a pendulum, a good method, and a few charts, you can do wonders for yourself.
Pendulum classes are available in May and June at Heaven On Earth Healing Alternatives, Fond du Lac. In only 3 hours, you will learn basic knowledge for using a pendulum with confidence, plus receive charts, written instructions and a step-by-step easy process for protecting every divination session, so you feel safe and aware of your spiritual connections. The pressure in the chamber allows the body to take in much more oxygen than it would normally be able to. By Dan Davies The first time I heard the phrase progressive resistance I was 14 years old. At that time I had no idea what it meant. Although I immediately thought, Wow, that sounds like the name of a horribly schlocky, 1980s science fiction film about aliens and their desire for human subjugation starring Adrian Zmed and William Shatner. Yeah, I know. I was a strange kid. I first learned about progressive resistance (weight training, exercise machines, resistance bands, etc.) from my dad. He was a noted athlete in high school and was a bodybuilder in the 1960s. He worked out in Milwaukee with some of the Midwests best bodybuilders. His workout partners consisted of a Mr. Wisconsin bodybuilding champ and a former Mr. Western America who won the title one year before Hercules Unchained and Mr. Universe Steve Reeves won it.

My dad felt that not only was it the best overall form of exercise but that it was the key to keeping yourself young. He was instrumental in getting me and all of my brothers and sisters on the road to health and wellness. He repeatedly said, almost to the point of ad nauseam, Guys, weight training keeps you strong and fast. Progressive resistance exercise keeps you... (pause for dramatic effect) progressively resistant to old age. And then hed immediately follow this life lesson with, Shut those damn lights off you beautiful, reprobate kids. of me as an older, slower, dumber version of Charles Woodson (61 and 200 lbs). My trainer, Greg Reynolds, is on task for me. First and foremost he believes in compound exercises. Compound exercises are the opposite of isolated exercises. These are exercises that hit many muscles all at once. When you perform them you are hitting at least two or three muscle groups. A great example is the bench press. When you perform a bench press or machine press you hit at least three muscle groups. You hit your chest (pectorals) your arms (triceps) and your shoulders (deltoids). This is far more effective because it is a time saver, it gives you more time between workout sessions to recover and these compound exercises also increase your testosterone/HGH, which aids in muscle procurement and refinement. Another great compound exercise is the squat. This exercise hits your thighs (quadriceps) your butt (gluteus maximus-kind of sounds like a disgraced Roman Emperor) your lower back (erector spinae) and your lower abs (rectus addominis). On that note here is a rough overview of Gregs Compound K.I.S.S. (Keep it Simple) workout. Day one - 40-minute run/stretch for 15 minutes Day two - strength train chest/shoulders/tris/core Day three - 40-minute run/stretch for 15 minutes Day four - strength train back/biceps/core Day five - rest Repeat cycle...the only difference is strength train legs/core on day two, chest/shoulders/tris/core on day four. If you miss a day unexpectedly, simply start the cycle over again. Next month I will go into detail with specific exercises, set/rep information and the importance of recovery between workouts. So if you can take anything from this article please remember to add in progressive resistance to be progressively resistant to old age and remember to turn those damn lights off you beautiful reprobates.

efore Chem-Dry came to visit my home this week, we were contemplating replacing our carpet. It wasnt an expense we wanted to endure, but the appeal of fresh, clean, new carpeting was pretty strong and our carpets were pretty dismal. Practicality won out, however, after we heard about Chem-Dry and their environmentally-friendly cleaning process, so we decided to try that first. I am so glad we did! Chem-Dry uses the power of carbonation to extract more dirt and grime from carpets, giving them a deeper clean. Their carbonated cleaning substances only require them to use a fraction of the moisture that steam cleaners require, which allows carpets to dry quicker and helps prevent the growth of mold and mildew under the carpet. They
like to say Dry in 1 to 2 hours not days! That sounded appealing to me, because who wants to wait for carpets to dry? Chem-Drys signature cleaning solution, The Natural, is a cleaning mixture that through the power of carbonation lifts dirt to the surface where it is whisked away. The Natural is non-toxic and ideal for homes with kids and pets, and recently received the Green Certification. The thought of drier carpets was appealing to me, as I didnt want to have to worry about my pets walking around on chemicals when they were done. Another bonus: Chem-Dry uses a patented Pet Urine

Removal Treatment (PURT) for tough pet odors and stains, which is another problem weve had to deal with. Scheduling my appointment with ChemDry was easy. They have two locations serving Appleton/Oshkosh (920.739.5757) and another serving the Green Bay area (920.465.9047). You can go on their Web site www.chemdry.com to get more information or schedule an appointment, or call 1.888.878.3379. The staff at Chem-Dry was so friendly and the pricing was low compared to many I have checked into. It was easy to see the special touches they made that made them stand out. For example, when they came into my home they made sure to take care to watch out for my pets so they didnt get outside, and they put a seal around my door so the cold air did not come in. In addition to carpet and upholstery cleaning, some Chem-Dry franchises offer carpet repair, area and Oriental rug cleaning, leather and vinyl cleaning, or auto interior detailing. Others offer stone, tile and grout cleaning and water damage and restoration. (Because each franchise varies, be sure to inquire when you make your appointment.) Chem-Dry even does business and commercial cleaning jobs. My carpets look like new again for much less than it would have cost me to replace them. I am very happy I went with ChemDry and will be working with them long into the future.

to as DHT. If one has a genetic tendency, this hormone becomes the culprit. After spending more than three decades in the appearance business, I have yet to meet a man that would choose to lose his hair. Say what you will, but hair loss ages people and can detract from ones appearance. Some men combat hair loss by shaving their heads, but for many this does not suit the rest of their personality or lifestyle and does not help their personal image. So what can men do about hair loss? Lets explore the options. We will discuss options for maintaining the hair you have, for individuals in the beginning stages of hair loss, and also the options for creating additional hair on the scalp for those with more extensive hair loss. When it comes to replacing hair, there are now fabulous alternatives, both non-surgical as well as surgical procedures. Beginning with non-surgical techniques, the days of old fashioned, fake looking rugs are long gone. Todays technology and customization of hair systems creates totally undetectable results
that duplicate hair growing out of the scalp. It is unfortunate that men who experience hair loss do not realize that many others have had their hair restored utilizing this method, but subconsciously do not know and in their minds still have a mental picture of an old unnatural hairpiece. Looking 100 percent natural is the priority. Todays non-surgical options enable men to swim, sleep and shower all with complete confidence. Laser Hair Therapy is a low-level laser light that is administered to the scalp. In conjunction with an FDA-approved growth activator, it can slow down hair loss and potentially stimulate new growth. Laser Hair Therapy is non-invasive and provides added benefits for many. Another FDA-approved drug, Propecia, has been proven to be effective in slowing down hair loss. Another option is surgical hair transplantation. For the proper candidate (determined after an evaluation of existing hair and the desired result), this can be an excellent alternative. Surgical procedures basically involve re-arranging hair, taking it from the back and sides of the head and transferring it to the front and top of the scalp. Its important for men to understand that there are options to help you feel whole again. If your hair loss concerns you, you owe it to yourself to explore your alternatives. Be proactive it can change your life!

These tactics get you to reveal personal or financial information. 6. Relative Scam: With this scam, grandparents are targeted and duped into thinking they are aiding a grandchild by wiring money for an emergency. The victim receives a distressed phone call from someone he believes is his grandchild. The grandchild explains that he has been arrested or in an auto accident and needs money to post bail or pay damages usually amounting to thousands of dollars. Money wired to Western Union or Moneygram is immediately picked up by the scammer and is gone. 7. Job Scams: Scammers target the unemployed and others through work-at-home, online and mystery shopper job scams. Job-hunters are told they will be paid to work from home after paying for a start-up kit that never arrives. Mystery shoppers are hired to secret shop a wire-transfer service. Theyre sent a check, told to deposit it, keep a small percentage of the money as their wage, and wire the rest. The business address turns out to be fake, with the money wire-transferred to another location. The check is

Business Opportunities: You are invited to attend a presentation on a new business opportunity. These investments appear lucrative, but often are more hype than substance. The promoter convinces investors that they can be part owners of investment portfolios if they enlist new recruits, often promising commissions. 9. Business Directory Scams: Small business owners are targeted through unauthorized invoices, unordered packages, and phony business directories. Businesses receive lookalike, or phony, invoices for advertising space in the familiar, locally distributed, yellow page directories. These invoices are actually solicitations for listings in business directories that differ from the well-known yellow pages. In fact, that directory may not be widely distributed, can be of little or no value, or may never be published at all. 10. Overpayment Scams: Online buyers and sellers, particularly those that use websites like Craigslist and ebay, are targets for overpayment scams. The scammer poses as a buyer and sends a payment (via check, credit card or money order) that is more than the agreed upon price. He then asks you to send back the difference or pay cash to a delivery person a co-conspirator. However, the payment is fraudulent, leaving the seller out both funds and product.

Valley Organics greening lawns the healthy way
By Jennifer Walla The professional lawn care industry in the United States is big business, raking in billions of dollars in sales each year. But Troy Reissmann thinks one of the main reasons consumers choose to work with big chemical-based lawn care companies is because they simply dont know just how unhealthy the products theyre paying for are, or that there is a viable, healthier alternative. The big chemical lawn care companies prey on the ignorance of consumers, he says. They know that Americans want lush, green lawns and that they are willing to spend their hard-earned money to get them. But people dont realize these companies have slick marketing departments on the payroll to tap into the psychology of that desire to get that lawn at nearly any cost including the health and safety of our children and pets.

By Teresa Van Lanen A jester by any other name is still a fool. The court jester was a universal character across the globe in medieval times. He often would be an actor, juggler, musician, or simply someone whose antics were found amusing by a nobleman. A jesters job was to evoke laughter and joy into a dark stressful world. Sounds appropriate today as well, wouldnt you agree? In light of April Fools Day, I want to celebrate the
inner jester in all of us. There are many benefits to laughing from an emotional and a physical stand point. In the December issue of Natures Pathways, Joan Ek reported on a provocative form of exercise called Laughing Yoga. She named several benefits to this
practice, some of which are increasing breath support, messaging of the inner organs, and boosting the immune system. Laughing is a serious matter when there is a new form of science (psychoneuroimmunology) that researches how the brain and behavior affect the immune system. There

Who made the rule that spirituality and fun and joy and laughter and lightness dont mix? Edward Mills
have been studies that demonstrate that the two hemispheres of the brain correlate together when humor is being processed. The hormone endorphin is released in states of joy, happiness and laughter that aid in warding off pain and increasing pleasurable affects in the body. Laughing, like its counterpart crying, can be an excellent release to pent-up emotion. Just Google the words joy or laughter and see how amazed you will be with your results. I learned that 2,541 songs have the word laughing in them. I found poems, operas, paintings, and even spiritual icons related to laughing. To look up the word joy in book titles and you can find hundreds, the joy ofcooking, gardening, stats, sex. We know this is a current trend when it is confirmed not only by science and society, but in spiritual practices. I found this photo and caption by Edward Mills on one such site, where he comments: Who made the rule that spirituality and fun and joy and laughter and lightness dont mix? The Dalai Lama also seems to exude lightness in the midst of his profound presence. You often see him smiling or grinning. And sometimes it sure looks like a pretty mischievous grin, if you ask me. I think you could easily see the Dalai Lamas inner jester showing in this photo and it seems that he is very proud of that fact. Instead of the medias version of what is funny (where comedy typically is portrayed at the expense of someone else), find a way to engage in a pure form of jest and laughter. Listen to what this research study found: that children before pre-school age laugh more than 300 times a day. How many times a day do you think you laugh? Try counting it out for 3 days and then average it to see. If you are like most adults it will be around 15 times. What a difference as we reach adulthood and our level of pure joy and happiness. As adults we build up worries, responsibilities and criticisms
that seem to hold down our laughter meter. One way to become more happy and joyful is to practice a regular dose of laughter. Tap into that youthful innocence. Celebrate your inner jester every day. Try these tips: Dont take yourself too seriously; laugh at your mistakes and even at your reflection. Spread your laughter to others, getting that contagious laughing going spreads a lot of joy. Start a pay-it-forward joke line with friends or colleagues. Be child-like with spontaneous silly songs or dance moves. Watch your joy grow day to day!

they are, you can see if he has received complaints from previous employers. Another thing to check is a contractors experience. A contractor is only as good as the experience he has with the particular problem you are having with your roof. The contractor should guarantee the work and he should not ask for more than one half of the payment up front. A good contractor will not require final payment until the job is complete. You should always have the name of a reputable contractor on hand in case of roofing emergencies. That way, when there is an emergency you wont have to waste valuable time searching for someone who is trustworthy. Plan ahead for roofing problems. Meet with various contractors to find someone you have chemistry with. Make sure they show a high level of professionalism. Look for someone who is courteous, respectful and punctual, and has good communication skills. Keep in mind that the lowest bid isnt always the best choice. Some contractors who give the lowest bid wont be able to finish the job and you will end up hiring another contractor to finish the job. Spending a little extra money will be the better choice because in the long run you will end up paying more than original quote anyway.

This is best when done 1-2 hours before going to bed. Practicing relaxation methods such as meditation, breathing techniques and hypnosis may also prove to enhance the experience of sleepy slumber. (listed below) that was created by a hypnotherapist. Its a technique that will allow you to temporarily remove those unwanted thoughts in preparation for this time of wonderful sleepy slumber. When you are ready to think about them, process them, they will be there waiting for you in your waking hours. You wont remove them forever, but rather will be able to deal with and process those thoughts in a much more positive way than in the past. This works because both your mind and body have had rested and had plenty of time to subconsciously evaluate and work out the best way going forward.
Once comfortable in bed and your eyes closed, imagine, sense and feel yourself entering into a room. The room is very bright because you see that one door is projecting all of the bright light of your unwanted thoughts. This is something that you do not want so you are now going to get rid of that very bright light by painting it black! As you see yourself standing in this bright room you notice there are several large cans of black paint and brushes in the corner of the room. See yourself walking over to the corner of the room, pick up a brush and feel and sense its handle in your hand. Pop open the lid on the can of black paint and fill your brush with black paint. It will now be very easy to paint that door black. The brush in your hand is loaded with black paint. Now, begin to paint black all over the thoughts, one at a time, shutting out the bright light. Brushing up and down and side to side. Wherever
those unwanted thoughts of bright light are shinning, keep painting over them until they are all gone. As you continue to paint you may notice that you have missed a few spots. Paint over them. Keep on painting until all the paint on your brush is gone. Then go back and load the brush up again with the black paint from the can. Continue to paint the whole door black. As you continue to paint the door black, it becomes darker and darker and the more tired you become. Still concentrating only on painting the door black and noticing the tired feeling from painting, you simply fade into that sleepy slumber. You will find that when you awake at your normal rising time, you do indeed feel alert, refreshed, full of energy and simply better than you have in a long, long time. You are free because you have now discovered that you can easily and quickly fall into sleepy slumber by painting the door black and shutting out any unwelcome thoughts. You are now one step closer to being in control of your sleep and feeling rested! This technique can be very useful in distracting the conscious mind so much it just simply and easily allows the sleep state to occur. Although this process may work well for many there may be those who would greatly benefit from individual hypnotherapy sessions to process and eliminate the cause.

thick. This thin layer covers the inner surface of the many feet of intestine and if it gets damaged you will get sick and create an overactive immune system producing inflammation all over your body. When this happens we have something called a leaky gut (known in medical terms as increased intestinal permeability). A leaky gut allows partially digested foods to enter our circulation. Then our immune system leaps into action and creates IgG antibiodies and we develop allergies (delayed reactions up to 72 hours after eating) to common foods. This is what makes us sick, fat, toxic and inflamed. Your gut is also your second brain and it contains more neurotransmitters than your brain. It is highly wired to your brain and messages travel back and forth. When these messages are altered for any reason you will not feel well. Your guts job is to get rid of all the toxins produced as byproducts from your liver as well. A recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, showed improved mood and less psychological distress and anxiety with use of probiotics (healthy good gut bacteria) for many participants with gastrointestinal discomfort. Imagine, swallowing capsules of healthy bacteria helps your brain function better!

There are many things that can damage our digestive system:
A diet that is low in fiber and nutrients, high in sugar, processed foods and calories helps make the wrong bacteria and yeast grow. Overuse of medications that damage or hurt the gut or stop normal digestive function such as anti-inflammatories, antibiotics, acid blocking drugs and steroids. Chronic low-grade infections or imbalances of bacteria, yeast or parasites. Toxins such as mercury and molds. Lack of adequate digestive enzymes from acid blocking

medications or zinc deficiency. Too much stress can alter the gut nervous system causing a leaky gut and change the normal bacteria in the gut. Certain artificial sweeteners such as Splenda are harmful to our healthy gut bacteria.
Eat nutritious whole, unprocessed foods. Purchase more food from the outside aisles of the grocery store the meat/ produce and dairy sections avoid foods with additives, preservatives, colorings and chemicals that come pre-packaged in boxes and bags. Eat plenty of fiber vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Eat real food! Try an elimination diet if you think you may have food sensitivities. Stop all gluten, dairy, yeast, corn, soy and eggs for a week or two and see how your gut feels and what happens to your other symptoms. Avoid foods that cause you to feel bad. Diagnose and treat any infections such as parasites, small bowel bacteria and yeast. Take digestive enzymes with your meals. Try hydrochloric acid (Betaine HCL) 5 minutes after a meal to improve digestion and movement of food from the stomach to the small intestine. Take probiotics healthy bacteria daily. Purchase name brands that assure potency upon delivery to the lower bowel. Take extra omega 3 fatty acids such as fish oil supplements which help to decrease inflammation in the gut and body. Take gut healing nutrients such as glutamine and zinc, Quercetin, ginkgo biloba extract, Vitamin C and E. Take several doses of a high-quality, pharmacy-grade multivitamin daily. Consider the following factors when choosing supplements: manufacturers who use GMP (good manufacturing practices) or the equivalent, third-party analysis for independent verification of active ingredients and contaminants, evidence of clinical trials on humans, long history of use and safety, free of harmful preservatives, fillers, binders, excipients, flow agents, shellacs, coloring agents, gluten, yeast, lactose and other allergens. Manage your stress well.
For more information visit the web site of Dr. Mark Hyman (www.DrHyman.com), a functional medicine specialist who takes a systems-biology approach to personalized medicine that focuses on the underlying causes of disease. His books, The UltraSimple Diet and UltraSimple Metabolism, are excellent resources to learn more about healthy eating, food allergies and lifestyle. In my practice we create a wellness plan for each woman that addresses many of the digestive issues mentioned here. One of my patients recently discovered that she was allergic to eggs by going on the UltraSimple Diet for a few short weeks. She stopped eating eggs and lost 16 pounds in two months due to the removal of this food that was causing her immune system to overreact and create inflammation and weight gain. She now avoids eggs and reports having much more energy. Many of my patients begin to feel better with a comprehensive, individualized approach to health that treats digestive issues and female hormone balance. By getting your diet and gut in shape, receiving proper guidance regarding supplements and stress management plus getting your female hormones balanced you can feel great!

sway between the fight or flight (sympathetic) system and the rest and repair (parasympathetic) system and becomes stuck in sympathetic activation. Usually these two systems have opposite effects. Think of a teeter-totter, with the sympathetic nervous system on one side and the parasympathetic system on the other: When fight or flight is activated, rest and repair is not. The reason the sympathetic portion of our nervous system has been dubbed fight or flight is because its activation causes a cascade of physiological events that are designed to help us escape from an emergency situation, including increased heart rate and blood pressure, dilation of lung bronchioles, decreased stomach and intestinal motility and, sometimes, an increase in pain receptor sensitivity. The parasympathetic (rest and repair) system promotes normal body maintenance activities, including proper digestion and elimination. A healthy nervous system goes back and forth between fight or flight and rest and repair throughout the day, with slightly more time spent in rest and repair. Unfortunately, your body responds the same way to being late for a meeting as it does to fleeing from a bear thats trying to make you its next dinner, and so you may spend most of your day in the fight or flight mode. This is similar to always taking money out of your checking account but never putting any money back in. Its unsustainable and sooner or later your body will not be able to keep up with the demands. Chronic fatigue and pain, seemingly popping up out of nowhere, can result. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to turn down the fight or flight response. First and foremost, slow, diaphragmatic breathing has been shown to be one of the best things you can do to shift into rest and repair. Also, simply being aware of the tendency to hold your breath and tighten your muscles in a stressful situation can help. And, if you are seeking treatment for a pain issue, especially a chronic pain issue, you should be leaving your practitioners office in a greater state of rest and repair than when you came in. Do what you can to cultivate the rest and repair mode; its energy conservation for your body!
It feels wonderful to be able to do things I havent done for a long time without the pain I was so used to. Cheryl, De Pere, WI

was coming from inside the crocodile, they believed the visitor. Since the big gulp, the croc hasnt eaten or had a bowel movement in four weeks and appears depressed and in pain He moves very little and swims much less than he used to... He also wont play with three fellow African crocodiles, despite being a leader in the group.
Mechanism of harm
While we wouldnt consider swallowing our cell phone, we do place it near our brainmaybe for hours each month. We carry various wireless devices, from iPads to iPhones, near vital organs such as reproductive glands. Even if the device is away from our brain, it probably is still in our personal biofield, competing with our own bodys natural energy. A cell phone is really a radio. The cell phone inside the crocodile sends information signals on waves to a base station/tower maybe several miles away. To cover the distance, the signal is pushed by a burst of power which is a source of radiation of most concern. The farther the base station, the more power needed to carry the signal; the more power, the more radiation generatedand the greater the danger. There are two types of radiation associated with cell phones: the near-field radiation plume which penetrates the body about six inches from the phones antenna, and the more subtle far-field type. If the phone is against your head, it penetrates your brain.
If its on your waist, it penetrates the important blood-forming bones of your hips. This plume is like a bull in a china closet and it overtakes all of your bodys natural defenses against this type of exposure. We know that this type of near-field plume leads to tissue dysfunction such as leakage in the protective blood brain barrier and genetic damage, including interference with DNA repair. These biological effects lead to conditions ranging from brain tumors to learning difficulties in children. (Total Health, Vol. 28, No. 1)
Were zapped!
Radiations punch
Were being zapped: Today 84 percent of Americans own a cell phone, 89 million of us watch TV beamed in by satellite, and we cant sip a cup of coffee at our local caf without being exposed to Wi-Fi. The very electronic innovations that have changed our lives are also exposing us, in ways big and small, to an unprecedented number of electronic fields. Invisible pollution surrounds us twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, interrupting our bodies natural flow of energy. And for some, that pollution has reached the point of toxicity, causing fatigue, irritability, weakness, and even illness. (Zapped: Why Your Cell Phone Shouldnt Be Your Alarm Clock and 1,268 Ways to Outsmart the Hazards of Electronic Pollution, by Ann Louise Gittleman, 2010)

We strive to go above and beyond professional cleaning by treating our customers and their homes and places of business with respect and offering superior craftsmanship. We provide a level of personal accountability and quality assurance that other companies just cannot match. We are so confident in our carpet cleaning, we offer a 200 percent guarantee to both our commercial and residential customers. Whether you have carpet, tile, hardwood or natural flooring, we have the experience and expertise you need.
Carpet Cleaning
Although regular vacuuming can remove dry soil and debris from your carpeting, it leaves behind oily soils and particles that
are produced from cooking vapors, pets and dirt tracked in from outside the home. These oily contaminants that are left behind can cause your carpet to dull and fade. As the contaminants build up, they become more difficult to remove. Regular deep cleaning of the carpet can prevent the excessive buildup of contaminants and keep your carpets looking fresh and clean. Regular cleaning of your carpets also helps improve the air quality in your home by removing pet hair, dust mites and other allergens that thrive deep in the carpet. CSS is committed to offering the highest quality carpet cleaning around. What you can expect your cleaning technician to do: Pre-inspection: We will evaluate your carpets needs. Every carpet must be treated differently. We will decide what will be the best method for cleaning your carpet. You will know up

Post-inspection: Once the project is completed, we re-inspect the carpet with you to ensure that all the work was done to your satisfaction. Protect & Groom: When necessary we will place blocks or foil under furniture legs to protect them during the drying process and groom the carpet for a clean, inviting look. What you should do after the carpet cleaning: To decrease drying time try to keep the room temperature about 72 F and use fans to circulate the air around the cleaned carpet.
CSS uses oxology, not an enzyme that is slow to act and often requires several applications, nor an over-powering masking agent that only works for a short time frame. Oxology allows us to use the power of oxygen to destroy the odor at the source for good. Feel confident in knowing your CSS technician is certified in odor control. Dust mite and pet allergens found indoors are one of the leading causes of allergic diseases. Allergy Treatment Relief changes the shape of allergen proteins, making them unrecognizable to the body, which prevents them from causing an allergic reaction! When properly applied, Allergy Relief Treatment provides a residual effect for up to six months. Most tile and grout cleaners rely on water pressure or steam to clean hard surfaces. These floor cleaning methods can be inefficient and, in some cases, can actually damage your tile and grout flooring! We use the Rotovac because it uses a combination of rotary nylon cleaning brush bristles and spray jets to thoroughly clean tile and grout. The spray jets can use heated or unheated water at high pressure while the nylon brush bristles scrub the floor surface, the vacuum slots then suck up the water, grime and grit and results in clean, sparkling tile and brilliant grout once again! If you are looking for quality carpet and upholstery cleaning in the Appleton area, call us today at 920.257.3252 for a free estimate!

Upholstery
You can expect us to come to your home and inspect your furniture for potentially permanent stains or damage. Your CSS technician will first vacuum the furniture to be cleaned, and then pre-treat potential stains. Following that, we will perform the upholstery cleaning according to the fabric care specifications. At the end of the process we will talk with you about the cleaning and allow you to inspect our work. Remember, upholstery furniture cleaning helps preserve your investment. Relying on an expert will ensure that the upholstery in your home receives the care and maintenance it deserves.

& perception
Many individuals who have experienced Rolfing SI have reported changes in their physical structure to affect them on the energetic, emotional and spiritual levels.
find ourselves slowing down, experiencing chronic pain, losing flexibility or just not having our usual pep. Do you feel your body moving as though it were still winter? Old habits, patterns, stories and ways of being locked into the musculature and posture of our own bodies prevent us from being fully available to the opportunities and possibilities of the present. Our histories are held in our fascia, which is the continuous web of connective tissue that supports and penetrates all muscles, bones, veins, nerves and organs of the body. The fascia is a conduit for the protective mechanism of the nervous system and will thicken or shorten in response to trauma, injury or repetitive stress. This constriction and armoring serves a great purpose as it protects the affected area from further damage. However, once the injury has healed, the remaining holding pattern affects functioning of the entire body. The body is pulled out of alignment and becomes unbalanced. A certified Rolfer addresses alignment issues by working different fascial segments of the body in sequential order and by facilitating perceptual changes in how a client relates to his or her environment. This work is usually done through a series of 10 or 13 sessions where the body is balanced around a vertical line. Through this process, the Rolfer facilitates release of body history and the accumulation of armoring or chronic tension patterns that can later manifest as bigger problems. Correcting alignment may not only make you feel like spring, but can also affect you on multiple levels. As bones and muscles can finally do their proper jobs, energy is freed up and the body can now move more efficiently. Functioning of respiration, digestion, circulation and the nervous system is enhanced and the ability to process stress improves. Better balance and body symmetry can shift posture so dramatically that chronic pain often eases or disappears entirely. Many individuals who have experienced Rolfing SI have reported changes in their physical structure to affect them on the energetic, emotional and spiritual levels.
Feel more like spring by shaking off the heaviness and rigidity of winter. Your body will thank you!

in knowing where their food is coming from and how it is produced. CSA is a unique economic, social and environmental relationship between local households and the farmers growing and supplying the food. When communities support their farm neighbors there are numerous benefits including: local dollars are kept in the local economy, small-scale farming becomes financially viable for the farmer, and agricultural land is preserved for future production. Farm members get to meet the farmer who grows their food. Or better yet, they are usually welcome to visit the farm and see the food as it is being grown. This is not practical to do in our current global food system. Most CSA farms have events for members giving them an opportunity to meet each other and connect on a social level. From recipe blogs to pick-up sites, members have opportunities to chat about how they are using their food and share ideas. There is a growing trust that members have with their farmers. The use of sustainable farming methods is common on CSA farms. Sustainable farming is the practice of farming using
principles of ecology, the study of relationships between organisms and their environment. The use of cover crops (weed control), compost (fertilizer) and physical insect barriers is common on CSA farms. Conventional large-scale farms usually turn to synthetic herbicides and pesticides to fix the issues that arise from monoculture farming. Many CSA farms are certified Organic and follow strict USDA organic standards. Small farms are often more efficient using non-mechanical methods, which in turn reduces air pollution. In addition, local food travels far less distance from farm to consumer, reducing the environmental impact of long distance food
transportation. So as we enter into Wisconsins longawaited spring season, considered becoming a locavore by joining a local CSA farm. Every CSA farm is different and it is important that you find one that fits your needs. If CSA share isnt for you, try shopping at your local farmers market this summer. It is always fun to meet your farmers.

By Parnee Paras ince 1970, Earth Day has been celebrated yearly on April 22 in the United States. In 1970, a Wisconsin Senator, Gaylord Nelson, was inspired by the growing Vietnam War protests and came up with the idea of nationwide environmental education. With the current growing political changes in the Middle East, gasoline prices, oil reserves and energy alternatives have again fueled talks and action amongst all spectrums of our planet. It seems appropriate for us to celebrate this Earth Day with renewed spring revival of our commitment to lightening our carbon footprints, inevitable consumption and sustainable contributions. Over 10 years ago, I met a Native American Elder of the Bear Clan Lodge, Ogalala Lakota, that blessed me with the name of Moccasin Flower. She mentioned that she chose that name for me because she observed that I walked gently on the earth. This lead me to appreciate the flower, Lady Slipper (Cypripedium acaule), also known as Moccasin Flower, and an Ojibwe story of a young girl sent to a neighboring village to get a healing herb to help the people of her village suffering from an illness. On her travel back to her village, she lost her moccasins in the deep snow and walked home barefoot despite her pain, leaving a trail of blood where her footprints lay. The people of her village recovered thanks to her efforts and in the spring, she and her brother retraced her steps to find her moccasins. Along her trail, where she lost her moccasins, they found beautiful pink and white Lady Slipper blooms that look like moccasins. Each
Moccasin Flower reminds us of this young Ojibwe girls fortitude and how we may integrate such strength into our own lives and the future of our planet. We can find many simple ways to help our planet by buying recycled paper and everyday products such as bodycare products, food and water that encourage sustainability and by purchasing local products and products made with sustainability in mind. Our local farmers market and many local businesses encourage sustainability and supporting them recharges our local economy. For every $100 spent at a chain store, approximately $12-$43 stays in the community, as opposed to $45-$68 recirculating in the community when supporting a local business. Another effective contribution to our planet is our own mental health. Our healthier mindset can have a more positive effect on our immediate environment and this can ripple out into our community and eventually our planet. One of the most effective exercises in changing our immediate perspective is being grateful for the abundance we have in our lives. Each day, take time to write down one thing you are grateful for: the birds chirping good morning, your neighbor snow blowing your sidewalk, having the time to snow blow your neighbors sidewalk, the warmth of your bed and the delicious breakfast you took the time to make for yourself. Studies reveal that expressing gratitude may reduce depression and the more we practice gratitude, the more likely we will be happier.

Were all interconnected in so many ways and as we emerge from our winter slumber, we are reminded of our connections as we venture out into the world and experience the earth as she reawakens, inviting spring greens, fresh blossoms, being kind to our neighbors for we have more in common than we have differences. We have no idea what each other is going through or has gone through and if we can have compassion for each living being, we will understand each other more and move past our fears. We all want to be loved, have shelter, clean water, healthy food and our good health.

(ICV) that junctions the small and large intestine. The appendix is a signaling device for the valve, sending messages for it to open and close at the appropriate time in order to keep fecal matter (FM) in the cecum (large intestine) and allow fully digested food to enter the cecum as waste. Due to the radical changes that have taken place during the last 100 years in the molecular structure of food, the appendix has atrophied and lost its function. Food additives, genetically modified food, proton pump inhibitors, antacids, pharmaceuticals, hormones and NSAIDs have caused the GI tract to contain a lot that is not perceived by the body as nutrition. Partially digested food or FM can obstruct the valve and keep it from closing, allowing FM to backflow into the small intestine (SI) where it can be taken up into the circulatory system as if it were nutrition and attack any system or organ. The filtering system in the SI allows small particles absorbed through the intestinal villi into the circulatory system via the hepatic portal system coming off the SI to the liver. If FM has backflowed and is taken to the liver, the liver detoxes what it can, sends some things to the kidneys to detox, and those toxins it doesnt know what to do with are either stored in the liver as cysts or drain from the liver with bile through the common duct, where it then rejoins the digestive tract in the duodenum, where the stomach deposits food into the small intestine. The common duct also ports bile from the gall bladder and digestive enzymes from the pancreas into the duodenum. If FM that has flowed back into the small intestine cannot be detoxed and is dumped right back into the top of the small intestine, it can create an endless cycle of toxicity. If FM is taken through the circulatory system as if it were nutrition, it can degrade any organ or system. QEST teaches that many systemic illnesses are born of these gut toxins: arthritis, allergies, chronic headaches, rashes, exzema, auto-immune diseases and IBS.

Last fall, Dottie Mathews came to my QE Therapy office with a severe systemic histamine response. She was covered with hives all over her body, inside and out. Hives covered her face and neck. Her skin was pink with red welts on her face. Using Applied Kinesiology, I determined that the primary cause was environmental toxins and contaminated food. The target organs were: the vagus nerve (the only cranial nerve that leaves the cranium and feeds major organs throughout the abdomen), the small intestine, and the ICV. After the initial QEST protocol to prepare her energy body to receive the work, I checked her digestion. Using AK, I determined that she had entrapments in the diaphragm (esophageal, vena cava, and aortic), the ducts at the top of the system were obstructed (common duct, pancreatic duct), and the ICV was obstructed and not functioning properly. There were multiple corrections needed for vagus nerve swellings and toxic inflammatory swellings of the: appendix, gall bladder, pancreas, liver, esophagus, inner ears, lungs, stomach, small and large intestines, brain, trachea, and glands: pineal, adrenals, hypothalamus. The common duct, the pancreatic duct, and the ICV were obstructed.* Working with Dottie and delivering the corrective procedures for the toxic inflammatory swellings, I noticed her breath changing from shallow, fast breathing about 30 minutes into the first session. As I delivered the correction for the vagus nerve swelling (3-minute direction of energy into the vagus nerve target alarm points, one side at a time), she became calmer and the distress seemed to be abating. By the time she left, she was much less swollen and more relaxed. Her visible hives had been reduced by about 75 percent. She felt able to go to sleep. I saw Dottie again for an hour on each of the next two days and continued delivering the corrective procedures for toxic inflammatory swellings (more 3-minute holds) listed above. She was noticeably better after each visit and was calmed sufficiently with symptoms resolved after the third session.
*QEST works with the energy body that infuses and informs the physical body. Conditions may or may not be present in the physical body. The QEST Practitioner uses applied kinesiology and tests a series of numbers that are relative to specific corrective procedures. The procedures function to clear energetic disturbances in the energy body to trigger the clients healing from within. This practice is known as energy medicine. It is not massage, body work, or a substitute for medical treatment or physicians advice. Statements are not diagnosis or treatment of physical illness. Statements are not approved by the FDA. The word complementary means in addition to. Complementary medicine is treatment and medicine that you use in addition to your doctors standard care. One benefit is that many people who practice complementary medicine take a whole person or holistic (alternative) approach to treatment. They may take an hour or more to ask you questions about your lifestyle, habits, and background. This makes many people feel better about the treatment, the person giving the treatment itself, and the condition.

The well respected Dr. Andrew Weil uses the term complementary medicine when he describes the holistic or alternative method of treatment. In my practice, I refer to alternative treatment and sometimes complementary when describing what method I use. This seems to make people feel more at ease. Right now there is a shift in healthcare and how we treat certain diseases, disorders and conditions. Autism is now being approached with a complementary treatment in mind. There are many opinions in the clinical field as well as in the complementary medicine field on how to treat autism. Some feel you should cut out certain foods and introduce food combinations, and in the last few years researchers have mentioned that not only should you be casein- and gluten-free, you might need to look at food allergies as well. I have read many articles on what you should eliminate and I decided to write about the dairy- and gluten-free options that have been the chat amongst the alternative health providers. To fully understand how to treat, one must know what autism is. Autism is not a disease but a condition in which psychological development is disturbed which also results in disturbed perceptions and relationships. It is one of the most common developmental disabilities and ranges in severity from being a simple handicap, which puts simple limits on a normal life, to a devastating disability, which requires institutional care. Out of every 1,000 children, 6 are affected by autism. The condition usually presents itself during the first three years of life, but some children already show symptoms from birth. Sometimes, babies undergo normal development but show signs later on, usually between their 18th to 36th months.

Autistic children may be very sensitive or allergic to gluten, and this sensitivity is believed to be one of the causes of autistic symptoms.
Although autism tends to be more common in boys than in girls, it does not discriminate among race, ethnicity, social boundaries, family income, lifestyle, or educational levels.

Alternative methods
A gluten-free/casein-free (GFCF) diet is just one of the various alternative treatments for autism. This diet requires the elimination of gluten from all foods. Parents who follow this regimen must make sure that gluten or casein is barely present in all the foods eaten by their autistic child. Autistic children may be very sensitive or allergic to gluten, and this sensitivity is believed to be one of the causes of autistic symptoms. Some parents choose to have their autistic child undergo allergy testing before beginning the GFCF diet. However, even if their autistic children show no allergic reactions to gluten, some parents still give GFCF foods to them. Among the improvements seen in autistic children who follow this diet have better speaking ability and more controlled behavior. With far fewer risks and side effects, these are viable alternatives to synthetic drugs and can be effective and safe. These choices address the underlying issues and not just the symptoms of autism. Some choices that have been effective are: MindSoothe Jr. Promotes emotional stability and balanced mood in children Pure Calm Works quickly to facilitate a calmed mood and soothed nerves Focus Formula Supports concentration and attention, while promoting normal energy levels in children and adults Tula Tantrum Tamer Homeopathic remedy that calms tempers, tantrums and restlessness in children Tic Tamer Homeopathic remedy controls nervous spasms and jerking As someone who is involved in complementary medicine, I am truly excited about the findings on how to help children and adults with autism live healthy and happier lives. With the research and understanding that food, if directed properly, can heal most disorders, diseases and conditions, I think that autism is no exception to that rule.

Cassandra Wind, CEO and founder of Wind Touch Healing, will present two workshops at the conference one on womens intuition and one on the power of touch. Wind said that one of her motivations for presenting at this conference is because it places specific focus on women. A conference like this allows women to broaden their knowledge and experience, Wind said. Women will gain new understanding about their health, confidence and self-awareness. Wind said not only are conferences like the Womens Wellness Conference good for making women aware of her topics, it also helps women come together over a common topic. These meetings help women bond. Participants find that they have something in common with other women, and they feel less isolated, she said.
The 2011 Womens Wellness Conference will focus on some of the most common complementary and alternative medicine therapies, including meditation, diet-based therapies and healing touch. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), approximately 30 percent of adults in the United States aged 18 years and over and nearly 12 percent of U.S. children aged 17 and under use some form of complementary

Bonnie Groessl, nurse practitioner and owner of The Bridge to Health, will also be presenting at the conference. Groessls presentation, Depression and Anxiety What You Can Do, will specifically discuss using tools women already have. This is about how to have the life you want. I tell people all the time, we have more chemicals in our brains than in a pill bottle, Groessl said. Like many other conference workshops, Groessls presentation will focus on the holistic perspective of improving health. Specifically, Groessl will discuss incorporating nutrition, mindbody techniques and spirituality to address anxiety and depression. There are things you can do right now that change how beta endorphins and serotonin are released in your brain, Groessl said. This workshop is for anyone who wants to treat depression without or with only a few prescription medications. Obright explained shes looking forward to seeing a group of women empower themselves through their actions to live better, healthier lives. While this conference is about healthy and holistic living, its also about women empowering themselves by using tools around them to live happier lives, Obright said. This conference focuses on issues that are most central to womens health and happiness, and were teaching an approach that incorporates the mind, body and spirit. The workshop will be presented by the UW Oshkosh Office of Continuing Education and Extension. For more information on the conference, to read detailed workshop descriptions or to register, visit www.uwosh.edu/go/wwc or call 800.633.1442.

Inner bonding
Inner Bonding was developed by Dr. Erika Chopich and Dr. Margaret Paul. It was first presented in their book Healing Your Aloneness. The process evolved and Dr. Margaret Paul went on to publish Inner Bonding and her latest book, Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By God? One of the sayings we so often hear and say is, You really have to love yourself before you can really love another. But how do you do that? What does it look like to really love yourself? If we did not have parents who loved themselves it is difficult for us to learn how to do this. Our parents may have been loving to us and others but unloving to themselves. Inner Bonding offers a road map on how to create an internal relationship that is loving and supportive. It is based on a sixstep process that can be used throughout the day to more deeply connect with the self and ones spiritual connection. One of the goals of Inner Bonding is to develop an internal loving adult who cares for the authentic self. In Inner Bonding the authentic self is referred to as the Child. Most people tend to operate from a wounded child-adult aspect, a part
of them that is modeled after their parents behavior towards them. This wounded childadult has hundreds of false beliefs that were learned from parents and other caregivers. The six major false beliefs that tend to be most prevalent are: 1. There is something wrong with me. Im unlovable, unworthy, inadequate, defective in some way. 2. I am powerless over how I feel. Other people or outside events are responsible for making me happy or unhappy. 3. Other peoples feelings are more important than mine, and I am responsible for their feelings. 4. I can control what others think of me, feel about me, and how they treat me. 5. Resisting others control over me is essential to my integrity. 6. I cant handle pain, discomfort, fear, hurt, grief, anger, disconnection from others, boredom, disappointment, shame or aloneness.
Breathwork
Breathing has been used for thousands of years as a path of personal and psychospiritual development. One of the oldest
www.naturespathwayswi.com
yoga textbooks dating back 4,000 years is the Shiva Sutras. It is a manual on how to breathe to become centered. Pranayama is the yoga term for Breathwork. Prana means life energy and yama means to lengthen. The practice of pranayama is a means to enhance life energy through lengthening or deepening the breath. The ancient yogis probably were the first to discover the relationship between breathing and mental/emotional states. They noted that certain forms of breathing evoked corresponding mental states. Irregular, shallow breathing was seen to result in disturbances of mind, emotion and body. Full, relaxed smooth breathing was seen as an accompaniment of a quiet mind. In the west, German psychiatrist Wilhelm Reich emerged in the early part of the last century as a pioneer in the field of psychology with his therapeutic use of breathing. He was an early associate of Sigmund Freud and pioneered the entire field of body centered therapy. One of Reichs observations was that people tended to develop what he called body armor. Body armor is when we protect ourselves from painful feelings and experiences by withdrawing ourselves and erecting
defenses. These defenses can take the form of chronic muscular tension. He noticed that when a client had a significant breakthrough in analysis there was often an accompanying release in muscular tension. Reich observed that when the feelings were held in, the breath was held in. He had his patients lie down and breathe deeply through their mouths. As the breathing deepened and the muscle tensions released, often there were corresponding releases of deep emotion. Modern day Breathwork is diverse with styles including Holotropic, Integrative and Radiance to name a few. Many of these styles integrate Reichian aspects as well as Rebirthing techniques. They also may integrate work from different body centered therapies as well as psychological theories. In the work that I do with clients I have the client lie down and breathe in full connected breathes. As they breathe they will have various body sensations. As they continue to breathe and become more present to what is happening in their bodies, emotions may surface. This may be sadness, fear, grief, loneliness or anger from the past or present. The client can then breathe into the feeling
and allow it to be fully expressed. It is important to continue to breathe while expressing the emotion so it can be fully released from the body. It is at this time that they are connected to their authentic self, their Inner Child. The child speaks to us through the body. Often at the end of the session people are surprised with what has surfaced and say, I never knew that was inside of me. It is important to utilize processes like Inner Bonding and Breathwork, any process that can bring you closer to your authenticity in the moment. It is through this deep listening to the body/child/authentic self, and responding to what is learned, that we build an internal loving relationship that nourishes us. It is from this connected, loving place that we are truly able to share love with those around us and contribute to a more loving world.

Shift happens!
By Joan M. Ek And the day came when the risk to remain in the bud became more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin Given the current states of affairs on the global, national and state levels, many have been displaced in their own lives. The resulting shifts affecting employment, relationships, health, wealth and the environment ultimately affects the spirit. What has become evident from the shifts in external forces is that lack of insight in behaviors leading up to them does not keep them from happening. In fact, it is by constantly reflecting and gaining insight along the way that allow simple adjustments to be made periodically, avoiding such devastation in the first place. Each of us is part of the solution. By applying our unique spirit, talents, knowledge and wisdom, we help overcome devastation and turn it into something useful. Having taken novel approaches to many situations in life (with success), I highly encourage you to step out of your current situation and into the one youve always dreamed of. How? By taking a novel approach! Try the following steps: Take an honest look at where you are today. Which components of your life do you love? Which could use some shifting? Which things are you tolerating that need to be removed completely? Look at all areas carefully and tell yourself the truth. Its the truth that will set you free! Select the one thing that once addressed, will remove the most aggravation and allow ease to enter into its place. It may be scary and overwhelming, but addressing it is what youve needed to do for some time, and simply chose to ignore. Ignore it no longer. Work with a professional, if needed. Find someone you trust to support you, and give yourself permission to make the changes needed. Take the time to make simple, sustainable changes. The result of a small action done consistently over a long period of time is ultimately better than a large action only done once. Build in rewards along the way. Make the rewards simple, and be sure they dont set you back on your path! They need to add to your quality of life, not detract from it. If you plateau, remind yourself to breathe, relax through this time, and think of how youll feel when you resume progress. Be confident you can do it!

There are no such things as mistakes. They are learning experiences, and are provided to help us to choose differently next time. And there will be a next time until we learn to choose differently. Share your know-how with others who may be behind you on their path and wanting to also make changes. Encouragement is paramount. It provides a way to keep the vision in mind. Make adjustments along the way, if needed. Do you still want what you believed you did in the beginning? If not, what do you really, really want? There is no shame in getting more clarity and redirecting. Learn to love the process and what you discover about yourself during the process. That is your blossoming. Remember: Its the journey, not the destination! Finally, take the opportunity to notice that all the joy, peace of mind, love and happiness youve been seeking has been here all along. It may simply be in a different form than what you were looking for. Trust and you will see it appear.

with a blood glucose monitor. Now, if you have weight to lose, you will have to cut back on your carb ingestion even more than someone who is at a desirable weight, but only as long as you are trying to lose the weight. If your blood sugar isnt within normal ranges when you test it, you arent reducing your carbs enough or if you need to lose weight and youre not, youre still eating too many carbs. Its just that simple. This plan differs greatly from the advice you have probably received from many so called experts. Most of the expert advice you receive centers around eating only 4 to 6 ounces of animal protein a day and minimal fat intake that includes using low-fat or non-fat dairy products. With so few calories coming from meats and fats, that leaves you with only one option, the remaining calories each day will come from - you guessed it carbohydrates. And what are carbohydrates? They are sugar. Its a vicious cycle but its easy to see that if you continue with your original way of eating eventually you will end up on medication for Type 2 Diabetes. If you follow this version, your overall health will improve greatly. Try it. What do you have to lose but maybe your medication (and a few pounds to boot)?

truly essential. Its time to rethink the delivery of these nutrients, and thats why Im pleased about the specialized form of phospholipidbound omega-3 fatty acids. It creates the first nutritional supplement that carries the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, EPA and DHA, directly to tissues, such as neural and cardiac cells. Besides that, the very process of putting together this form of omega-3s assures extraordinary purity and safety. These reasons efficacy, safety, purity, stability (no rancidity), and one to two tablet-a-day dosing are the reason that this specialized form of omega-3 fatty acids in supplement form is the first new news in omega-3 delivery science in a very long time. And this is why I recommend this form above all the others and Im very glad to tell you about it. Terry recommends an omega-3 formula with these ingredients. Look for this formula at your local health food store: Phospholipid Peptide Complex 292mg** Containing Phospholipids, Omega-3 [DHA (docosahexaenoic) and EPA
(eicosapentaenoic)] and hydrolyzed peptides extracted from Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar), in a balanced ratio as found naturally in salmon; not chemically altered or spiked with DHA/EPA.

East Wisconsin Savings Banks story began in Kaukauna in 1887 with a vision of local people pooling their hard-earned savings together to provide home ownership for family and friends. Back then, when D. J. Brothers drew up the charter in long hand for the Building and Loan Association, this was not an area of satisfied homeowners like it is today. There were no electric lights, no waterworks or sewers, no improved streets, and very limited school facilities. The industrial revolution was in its infancy and railroad stops were just being moved to this area. At that time, Norman J. Brokaw, a local manufacturer, had a vision of providing an opportunity for local workers to own a home. Brokaw knew that if workers were given the opportunity to own a home their families would be stronger, they would be better employees and the community would benefit. He saw the necessity for providing a means of financing the homes, and to him the building and loan plan presented the most logical solution. He saw the power of people helping people to accomplish a goal. The partnership began as local savers, seeking a good safe place to save, provided home ownership for family and friends. Each payday, members agreed to deposit a portion of their check into a share account. As funds accumulated, members could put in a bid to borrow money for the purchase of a home. The building and loan brought home ownership to many working families through this focus on
