Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory

Generic Name Diclofenac Na

Brand Name Difenax

Indication Used mainly for the relief of pain and inflammation in various conditions such as musco-skeletal and joint disorders and other painful conditions.

Action Associated with inhibition of COX activity the main enzyme metabolism of arachidonic acid, which is a precursor of prostagladins, which play a major role in the pathogenesis of inflammation, pain and fever. Analgesic effect is due to two mechanisms: Peripheral (indirectly, through suppression of prostaglandin synthesis) and central (due to inhibitions of prostagladin synthesis in the central and peripheral nervous system).

Side Effects Epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, rashes, skin eruptions.

Nursing Management Interventions: Administer drug with food or after meals if GI upset occurs. Arrange for periodic ophthalmologic exam during long term therapy. Teaching points: Take drug with food. Take only the prescribed dosage. Report sore throat, fever, rash, itching, weight gain, swelling in ankles or fingers, change in vision, black tarry stools.

Generic Name Ibuprofen, Carisoprodol

Brand Name Alaxan

Indication For relieving symptoms of bursitis, arthritis, and rheumatism.

Action Effective for fever reduction. Relief of tension headache, dysmenorrheal, toothache, pain after tooth extraction and minor surgical operations.

Side Effects Drowsiness, nausea, GI troubles, and other minor issues which pass away with time.

Nursing Management Should be given with care to the patient with kidney or liver disease including patient taking other drug that affect the liver. Do not take more than the recommended dose or duration of treatment. If stomach upset occurs, take this medicine with food. Long-term continuous use may increase the risk of heart attack or stroke.
