Using

Dirac (or bra-ket) notation ! 1. <f|g> = !! f (x)g(x)dx

<f| is the bra, |g> is the ket, and (<f| )( |g>)= <f|g>.

2. for a a constant, <af|g> = a*<f|g> <f|ag> = a <f|g>

3. <f|g> = <g|f>*

4. <f + g| = <f| + <g| 5. | f + g> = |f> + |g> ! 6. !! ! + ! ! + ! dx = < ! + ! |! + ! > = < ! +< ! |! > + ! > = < ! ! > +< ! ! > +< ! ! > +< ! ! >

7. In many quantum texts, the wavefunction (x) is also written as <x|>. This is somewhat sloppy notation, because <x|> is not used to mean x (x) dx ! ! Instead, <x|> is shorthand for !! (x-x)(x) dx , ie, just (x).

Here, (x-x) is the Dirac delta function, defined by the integral relation ! f(x) = !! (x-x)f(x) dx
