Printing from Film Printing from 135 Negative Film
The following provides an explanation of the basic procedure for printing 135 color negative film (uncut negative) immediately after the film has been developed.
Select the type of film mask Set the film type to [Negative] Select the print size Select the type of service Check that the output type is set to [Color] Set the film to the AFC Adjust the color and picture quality if necessary Print
Select 3 Print size and then select 4 Service on the home screen.
Print size: Select [3.5R] in the case of normal service prints. Service: Select [Normal] in the case of normal service prints.

Un-cut negative refers to the film prior to cutting, and is used to distinguish from film that has been cut. Printing from film that has been cut is referred to as reprinting. The procedure is somewhat different during reprinting.
Check that 5 Output type is set to color on the home screen.

Settings: Normally borderless (BL) is selected. Click [Settings] when the prints are to contain a border or when you want to specify the size of the border.* If you change BL to With Border (WB) or With Wide Border (WWB), return the settings to Borderless (BL) after finishing prints. Output type: [Color] is selected automatically in the case negatives has been selected for [Film type] in step 2. Check that [Color] has been selected.

Check that the 135 auto film carrier (AFC) is installed.

Change to the135 AFC* if another AFC is installed. 135AFC can scan to 3 frames. When it is less than 3 frames, the universal film carrier (option) is necessary.

Select 1 type of Film mask on the home screen, and then select 2 Film type. 12
The type of AFC currently installed is displayed. Digital ICE
Click 6 [Index] in the case an index is to be printed simultaneously with the prints.
Index refers to a print that allows confirmation of all images contained on the film. The index is printed following the last print.
Film mask: Select [135F/P] in the case of printing either full size or panorama only, select [Mix] in the case of printing a mixture of full size and panorama film, or select [135H] in the case of half size. Film type: Select [Negative] when printing color negatives.
Selected items are displayed surrounded with a green border. If an item other than that which has been selected is surrounded with a green border, click that item to cancel its selection. Digital ICE (Option): This function automatically corrects for dust or scratches on the film.

HINT
If this happens: When the film becomes jammed If the film becomes jammed when set to the 135AFC, press the emergency stop button in the scanner section. Forwarding of the scanner will stop, then slowly remove the carrier and take out the film. Never attempt to pull out the film while it is inside the scanner. If this happens: When the frames become out of position -If punched holes are on the outside of the film, cut off the parts and retry scanning. -If the film is an un-cut negative, cut it into six frame pieces and retry scanning.

Please read this manual thoroughly to ensure that the R1 SUPER is operated in the appropriate manner. A separate USER SETUP GUIDE has also been provided for your reference. [USER SETUP GUIDE] The manual contains information on operating procedures, setup procedures, settings and additional usage precautions that are not described within the INSTRUCTION MANUAL. Important The copying or reproduction of this manual without permission, in whole or in part, is strictly prohibited. The information described within this manual and the specifications for the software are subject to change in the future without notice. Before Operating the Unit

IWe accept no liability whatsoever for any damage, loss or malfunction caused due to the connection or usage of equipment or software that has not been specifically designated for use by us. IIn order to ensure safe operation of the input station, please observe the following precautions: If these precautions are not observed, malfunctions may occur, such as transmission abnormalities or data corruption. Prevent the unit from receiving sharp impacts or vibrations. Do not immerse the unit in water or other liquids. Do not allow high temperature objects or highly magnetic objects near the unit. IIf settings have been performed while print standby data is present, these settings may even affect the print standby orders. (In some cases, the print settings may change inadvertently in the middle of that particular order.) Settings should only be changed while print standby orders are not present on the printing progress status monitoring screen. IIf error messages are displayed, operations should proceed in accordance with the instructions on the monitor display. IProhibition Against Copying of Data Please ensure that additional precautions are taken to guard against the reading in and copying of data using the R1 SUPER, as the possession of copied data may be an action subject to legal prosecution. 1. Precautions on installing and using this system

Read this manual carefully before using this system. Before operating this system, make sure you understand and observe the following important precautions. 1. This equipment is used to expose and process photographic paper by using exposed film and digital media (e.g., CD-ROM, floppy disk, flatbed scanner). Do not use this equipment for other purposes. 2. To maintain safe and optimum functionality, operate this system properly according to the manual. 3. Keep this manual near the system, and always observe all precautions and follow all instructions. 4. Observe the warnings mentioned in this manual and caution labels. See Safety Guide, Description of Signal Words and Description of Warning and Caution Labels for details. 5. Do not install this system on an inclined or otherwise uneven floor, and avoid direct exposure to the sunlight. Do not position any lighting fixtures within 2m from the negative film carrier. 6. Be sure to install a ventilating fan in the room where this equipment is installed to protect the operators against gas, heat, odor and high humidity. 7. This system is not equipped with a cooling unit. Be sure to use in the following environment. Operate this system under an ambient temperature of 18-28C and relative humidity of 30-80%. 8. Since this system is grounded with a three-wire power cord, do not disconnect the grounding wire in order to avoid electric shock. 9. There are ventilating holes on the cabinet to prevent rises in temperature. Never block these holes with any objects. 10.Never stick your hands or any objects into the ventilation holes because the ventilating fans are operating. Electric shock or other injury may result. Also refrain from touching the processor's printer connector when the equipment is turned on. 11.In the case of continuous use for long hours, take a rest for around 10 minutes by one hour to give your eyes a rest. 12.Use the monitor at the distance of 80 cm in a bright room. Avoid using at the place where the sun ray or light reflects at the right angle. 13.Do not turn the processor on without docking it with the printer. 14.Be sure to contact your service engineer when installing, collecting, relocating or repacking the equipment. 15.Do not peel caution labels off the system. 16.Should the manual or any caution label be damaged, replace with new ones. 17.To purchase additional manuals or caution labels, contact your nearest our dealer.

Precautions for Processing Solution

1. Some tablets and processing solutions (concentrate solutions and solutions used, hereafter referred to as processing solutions) use non-medicinal poisonous chemicals which are irritants and / or which may be harmful if swallowed. Some processing solutions may also be skin or eye irritants, and may cause allergic reactions with repeated exposure. Please use care when handling tablets and processing solutions. 2. Wear safety goggles, gloves, and work clothes when handling processing solution to prevent direct contact with your skin. Also, make sure that the work area contains ventilation fans, and is properly ventilated when working with processing solutions. 3. If you directly touch the solution in tanks or processing solution, or if you conduct operation that may lead to direct contact, wash your hands with soap and plenty of water after completing operation. 4. Processing solution may discolor or otherwise stain clothing. 5. Emergency measures for processing solution. Should tablets or processing solution be swallowed, rinse your mouth out with water or drink one or two cups (180ml or more) of water. When instructed to do so by a doctor, induce vomiting to disgorge swallowed tablets or processing solution, then seek immediate medical treatment. Should processing solution get into your eyes, immediately wash your eyes out in running water for 15 minutes, then seek immediate medical treatment. If you touch processing solution directly, wash it off with a plenty of water. If any symptoms appear, consult a physician. There is a possibility of agents causing allergic reactions with repeated exposure. 6. Do not mix with hypochlorites (industrial or household bleach). 7. Dispose of package for processing solution in accordance with state and local regulations. 8. Please have disposal of chemicals performed by an authorized chemical disposal agent.

Precautions for Disposal of This System
When disposing of this machine, consult federal state and/or local regulations for the proper disposal method. When disposing of the equipment, be sure to treat it as follows before delivering it to the waste collector. Remove processing solution and carefully wash each rack and processing tank. Cut pipe hoses, remove remaining solution and wash carefully. Be careful not to allow the processing solution to leak into the environment. Dispose of process filters after completely washing them. Collection and recycling of the personal computer used in this machine is the responsibility of the computer maker. The backup battery (lead acid battery) used with this equipment must be disposed of in accordance with state and local regulations. Please contact your contract-specified maintenance company for removal, collection, and recycling. The battery must be removed (replaced or disposed of) by a service engineer; contact your local maintenance company. Regarding the method of disposal, be sure to observe the applicable laws and regulations of your country or state.

Precautions for Maintenance and Inspection

This system has been checked in accordance with laws pertaining to various product safety regulations before leaving the factory. Be sure to observe the following precautions whenever servicing this system. 1. Never perform any unspecified dissembling, modification, adjustment, or servicing with parts not specified in the manual. Never open or remove any unspecified covers because you may expose yourself to high voltage resulting in electric shock and serious burns. 2. Be sure to turn off all power sources when performing specified maintenance as outlined in the manual. If the power is not turned off, you may expose yourself to electric shock or other injury. 3. Do not run the power cord through locations where the cord may be crushed or stepped on. 4. When unplugging the power cord, make sure that the power has been completely turned off, and remove the plug from the socket by pulling on the plug connector section, not the power cable. (Use the same method for plugging in the unit) 5. Use a dry cloth for cleaning. Should water spill inside the equipment, turn the power off and contact our Service Department. 6. Make sure that all screw and parts that are removed for maintenance are put back into place before turning the power back on. 7. Before moving this system, turn the power off, then disconnect the power cord and connection cables. Be sure to drain all processing solution from each tank before moving this system. 8. Check for dust in the plug and socket of the power cord. Perform cleaning once a year. 9. Never modify or alter this system for any reason. 10.Do not use unspecified replacement parts. 11.Precautions on Heating Sections (Units) The lamp, which is used as a light source, the chemical solution heater, drying heater and motors all generate heat. Be sure that these parts have fully cooled down before initiating maintenance and inspection. Regarding the lamp, turn off the lamp and allow it to cool for 15 minutes. Once the temperature has dropped, turn off the breaker and main power switch before starting the maintenance activity.The cooling time for the heaters and motors varies depending on the duration of operation. After turning off the breaker and main power switch of this equipment, allow sufficient cooling time before starting operation. If you burn yourself, immediately cool the burned area under running water and seek medical treatment.

IMPORTANT NOTICE Due to the potential danger to an inexperienced person servicing this system, as well as the risk of damaging the system, our company strongly recommend that all servicing only be performed by our trained service engineers.
Should any user (trained by us) need to perform an emergency operation not specified in the Instruction Manual or User Maintenance Manual, first contact us to receive instructions before performing the operation. Before removing circuit boards, switches or sensors in the system, discharge static electricity from your body by touching other metal part of the system. 10. Never perform unspecified maintenance or modification. 11. Do not use unspecified replacement parts. 12. Make sure that screws and parts removed for maintenance are set back into place. 13. Do not make the interlock switch ineffective by inserting paper or other material.

Cautions for lithium battery The lithium battery mounted on the mother board is designed as a replaceable battery. This battery has a built-in combustible substance such as lithium and organic solvent. If you make a mistake in replacement method, heat generation, ignition or rupture may occur. Replace the battery with the one having a correct rating. Lithium battery: Model CR2023 When you have to replace the battery (lithium battery), be sure to contact a service engineer. Replacement must be made by a service engineer.
The backup battery (sealed lead battery) contained in this equipment is automatically charged when power is turned on. Be sure to contact your service engineer when replacing the battery.

Signal words indicate the levels of potential danger. Signal word contains the following three levels of danger, which are used properly according to the probability and seriousness of damage to be caused by the danger. Danger: Indicates an urgent situation that will likely result in death or serious injury should the problem not be corrected. Warning: Indicates a dangerous situation that is likely to result in death or serious injury should the problem not be corrected. Caution: Indicates a dangerous situation that may result in medium-scale damage or slight injury should the problem not be corrected. It is also used when only property damage is anticipated.

Basic Information about Photography

Let's make sure that we get a basic understanding of picture processing procedures.
Develop the film

Film developing must be performed within a darkroom. Film must not be taken out of the darkroom to any place where light may be present (lighted room) until the developing process is fully complete. If any light at all enters the room during this process, even a small amount, the film will become overexposed and will be rendered useless. Once the process has been completed, dry the film. Finally, the film can be taken out of the darkroom.

This can be performed automatically by using the film
developer.
Enlarge the image and make prints onto color paper (photographic paper).
Using solutions, develop fix wash (using water) the photographic paper. Perform all of these procedures within the darkroom. If any light at all enters the room during this process, even a small amount, the photographic paper will become overexposed and will be rendered useless.
This particular printing job can be performed by the
R1 SUPER.
* On the R1 SUPER, photographic paper is simply called paper.
Once the process has been completed, dry the photographic paper. Finally, the photographic paper can be taken out of the darkroom.

Main types of film IX240 film (APS film)

Digital camera

Index Print
IX240 (APS) film can be stored in its original cartridge after it has been developed. The image content of the film to be reprinted can be referred with the index print.
135 film is the most popular type of film used in 35 mm cameras. 135 film is a called 35 mm film, and is available in sizes of 12, 24, 36 and other exposures. There are a variety of kinds of 135 film, including negative, reversal and black-and-white.

135 film is general print film, also called 35 mm film. A variety of kinds are available for different purposes.

Color negative film

If this type of film is developed, the hues and shading will be reversed. However, when this type of film is printed onto paper, the negative is reversed, producing a positive print image. This type of film has a wide latitude for error (broad tolerances), thus allows slightly underexposed images, overexposed images, or color fogged images to be corrected at the time of printing.
Color positive (Reversal) film

This type of film produces a positive image when developed, just as if it has been made into prints. Due to its history of usage as a film for slides, it is also called color slide film. This type of film is also actively used for commercial printing purposes.
Monochrome (Black-and-white) negative film

Monochrome means single chrome (chromatic = colored). In most cases, the term monochrome represents black-and-white.

This is a cartridge-type film. This film is called 126 and has a film width of 35 mm. This width is same as that of 135 (35 mm) film.
110 film
This is a cartridge-type film, similar to 126 film but further miniaturized. It is also called pocket camera film. The pocket instamatic camera that utilizes this type of film was once extremely popular for a short time.
220 film
This type of film is used in medium-sized cameras. It features a roll of film that is twice the length of that in 120 film. *645 size
This is a picture size of 64.5 cm that has been taken using either 120 or 220 film and a medium-sized camera. It is also called Semi-size.
*69 size
This is a picture size of 69 cm that has been taken using either 120 or 220 film and a medium sizedcamera. It is also called Brownie size. The finish of pictures that have been taken for this size will be sharp and beautiful, with outstanding tone reproduction.

Icons
Icons are small graphics designed to show users the type of application or file at a glance.
Digital cameras
Digital cameras record photographs as image data without using film. Image data will be stored in the media such as SmartMediaTM or CompactFlashTM.
Scroll bars
Scroll bars are used to move the contents displayed in a window in different directions: up, down, left and right in order that all content may be viewed. If the screen content is fully displayed, this bar will not be present.
Drives
The general term for floppy disk drives, hard disk drives and CD-ROM drives and other storage media.
Files
A file is the unit of data, such as a document or an image. In the PC, all data including documents, images and audio are processed in the form of files.
Drivers
Drivers are software programs that allow peripherals, such as display and printers to properly interface with and function in the PC. When connecting new peripherals to a PC, the appropriate driver may also have to be installed.
Folders
Folders are the storage tools that facilitate the storage and organization of files. Folders can be freely created and named by the user.
Media
Devices used for storing data, such as floppy disks and MO disks, are collectively referred to as media.

Description These keys are used to fine adjust the position of the image. The image will move toward the direction of the arrow. These keys are used to adjust the image color tone. After pressing the key, press either [], [+], or [1] to [0]. [Y] = Yellow is adjusted with this key. [M] = Magenta is adjusted with this key. [C] = Cyan is adjusted with this key. This key is used to adjust the image density level. After pressing [D] key, press either [], [+], or [1] to [0]. This key is used to specify the number of sheets of paper to be printed. After pressing the [multi] key, press either [], [+] (unit: single sheet), or [<<], [>>] (per 10 sheets). When directly entering the number of sheets to be printed, press the [multi] key, then enter [1] to [0]. (Prejudgement screen) This key is used to adjust the image tone. After pressing the [T] key, press either [], [+], or [1] to [0]. This key is used to correct the image photographed under the different light source. It is also used to switch between the settings of F/L/OFF. Pressing this key simultaneously with any of the abovementioned keys will cancel the command specified by the shortcut key. For example, if [clear] is pressed while simultaneously pressing the [Y] key, the function used to adjust the color yellow will be cancelled and will return to the default setting. These keys are used to increase or to decrease the number of prints or the key correction value for color density on the prejudgement screen. These keys are used to select the image on the prejudgement screen (6 frames). Selection will move toward the direction of the arrow. This key is used to count the number of Sorts. When [Fn] is pressed, the guide will appear for a key which will be active in the next procedure. To cancel, press [Fn] once again. By combining [Fn] with other keys, a variety of additional functions can be selected: [Fn] + [<<]/[>>] = This combination passes/cancels passing all the images following the image selected. [Fn] + []/[+] = This combination passes/cancels passing the image selected only. [Fn] + [Y] = This combination rotates the displayed screen to an upside-down position. [Fn] + [M] = This combination switches between 1-frame display / 6-frame display. [Fn] + [C] = This combination repeats the operation just performed. [Fn] + [D] = This combination changes the size of the print. [Fn] + [Pass] = This combination adjust the under correction setting. [Fn] + [Clear] = This combination clears the settings of color, density and print numbers. [Fn] + [1] = This combination adjusts the red eye correction setting. [Fn] + [9] = This combination cancels the operation just performed. This key is used to specify frames that will not be printed. If the [pass] key is pressed after an image has been selected, the image will not be printed. If [pass] is pressed for an image for which [pass] has already been specified, the [pass] function will be cancelled. This key is pressed to start printing or to enter the item selected. Ten-keys. These keys are used to directly enter numbers for specifying selections or values.

Using the Character Input Keyboard

The character input keyboard is used to input characters.

Description The corresponding character on the key will be entered. Character entry is confirmed when this key is pressed. These keys move the cursor ( l ) that indicates character input position. This key deletes the character to the immediate left of the current cursor position. This key deletes the character to the immediate right of the current cursor position. Numbers and symbols can be input directly by pressing these keys, regardless of input mode.
Performing Operations Using the Touch Panel

Operations can be performed by using the touch panel on the printer processor unit. Using your fingertip, touch the desired button lightly.

The sort number is the order number, which is allocated to each processed. Sort numbers are automatically incremented once processing is completed. At the beginning of each day, the sort number is set to 1. The sort number is printed on the back of the print. (IN/Chapter 1 Printing from Film) 2 Multi-print This function is used to specify the number of sheets to be printed. The number of sheets specified here will be used for all prints within a particular order. For example, if 2 is selected, all images within the particular film will be double-printed. 3 Interrupt This button may be clicked to interrupt an order in process, so that a new order may be processed immediately. (IN/4-10 Interrupting Printing) 4 Quit This button may be clicked to set the unit to timer mode after the completion of daily operations. It is also used when power must be shut down. Printing from 135 Negative Film
The following provides an explanation of the basic procedure for printing 135 color negative film (uncut negative) immediately after the film has been developed.

Un-cut negative refers to the film prior to cutting, and is used to distinguish from film that has been cut. Printing from film that has been cut is referred to as reprinting. The procedure is somewhat different during reprinting.

Change to the135 AFC* if another AFC is installed. 135AFC can scan to 3 frames. When it is less than 3 frames, the universal film carrier (option) is necessary.

Set the film to the auto film carrier with the side on which the frame numbers can be read normally facing up starting with the lowest frame number. Set the end part way through and then support the film with hand until the film is carried automatically inside the AFC.
Anti-static film cleaner
Always make sure to pass the film through an anti-static film cleaner before setting to the 135AFC. When the message urging cleaning the rod lens and the slit base is displayed, clean the AFC. * The images on the film are scanned and the prejudge screen (6 frames) is displayed that allows you to check six frames at once. (When scanning the half film, the frame will be displayed automatically rotated 90 to the right.)

If this happens: When the film becomes jammed If the film becomes jammed when set to the 135AFC, press the emergency stop button in the scanner section. Forwarding of the scanner will stop, then slowly remove the carrier and take out the film. Never attempt to pull out the film while it is inside the scanner. If this happens: When the frames become out of position -If punched holes are on the outside of the film, cut off the parts and retry scanning. -If the film is an un-cut negative, cut it into six frame pieces and retry scanning.

Although the images of photographed objects are inverted (reversed) for both darkness and color when ordinary film is used to take photographs and developed, photographed objects are not reversed in the case of reversal film, with darkness and color appearing as they actually are. This film is also referred to as color positive film, and is used as slide film and for printing. When installing and removing the universal film carrier, remove the film mask. The film mask can be deformed or broken if you drop it.
Universal film carrier can scan reversal film, 135 cut film, mounted film (135/IX240 (APS)), 120 and 110. Required film carrier differs depending on the film size. The data on the IX240 (APS) cannot be read by the carrier.
Install the film mask corresponding to the universal film carrier, and install it into the film scanner. Then, set the film.
1Click [Film mask initial (green)] once the film mask is replaced. 2The message, Film mask moves to home position. OK?, will be displayed. Click Yes. The carrier is forwarded and initialized.
120 film mask is with a pressure lever. When printing, place the film mask by pulling down the lever. 135 and 120 film mask have a neg-press plate assy, which responds to film size. Install a corresponding neg-press plate assy to the film size before using the film mask.

Printing Titles and Dates (Printing IX240 (APS) Table)

IX240 (APS) lets you register titles, dates and times when taking pictures depending on the camera, and the information can be printed on the prints. Data cannot be printed unless it is recorded with the camera when taking pictures. A table of title, date and time can only be printed for cameras equipped with a data writing function. (This data cannot be written in the case of Film in) In addition, since the data written onto the film is in the form of magnetic data, the data is not printed when the 240AFC magnetic head has not been cleaned or the film data itself has disappeared.

These are used to adjust magenta. Clicking [+M] increases magenta intensity, while clicking [M] decreases magenta intensity. These are used to adjust cyan. Clicking [+C] increases cyan intensity, while clicking [C] decreases cyan intensity.
Yellow, magenta and cyan The colors routinely seen in color photographs, printed matter and paint, etc. are expressed in a combination of three colors referred to as the three primary colors of the subtractive color process. These colors consist of yellow (Y), magenta (M) and cyan (C). Subtracting and adding these three colors makes it possible to express various colors. Furthermore, each color has an opposite color referred to as a complementary color. The complementary color of yellow is blue (B), that of magenta is green (G), and that of cyan is red (R). Mixing equal amounts of complementary colors results in achromatic colors. For example, a green (G) fogged image photographed under fluorescent light can be corrected by adding its complementary color, magenta (M).
Density adjustment keys [+D] [D] [+T] [T] These are used to adjust density. Clicking [+D] increases density, while clicking [-D] decreases density. These are used to adjust tone.
When adjusting color and density, their respective values are displayed above the image.
Color and density can also be adjusted using dedicated keyboard*. The color and density adjustments can be made using [D], [Y], [M], [C], [T] and [+] / [-] or ten-keys on the dedicated keyboard. The rates of change of the color and density keys can also be changed.*

This function is used to change the sharpness of image detail out line. The level of sharpness can be selected from soft 2-1, standard or sharp 1-2. This function is used to adjust color brilliance and correct to more vivid colors. The level of color brilliance can be selected from low 2-1, standard or high 1-2. This function is used to smooth the detail from a coarse image. This function can be switched ON or OFF. The ON setting contains levels 1-5. This function is used to adjust an images that have been taken with opposite light. It also corrects dark areas that have been underexposed and make areas that have been too bright to view visible. This function can be switched ON or OFF. The ON setting contains levels 1-5. This function is used to correct the gradation of an entire image by softening shapes other than outlines. This can result in a dream-like image. This function can be switched ON or OFF. The ON setting contains levels 1-5. This function is used to reduce the cyclic noise (lattice-like stripes) caused by certain types of images. This function can be switched ON or OFF. This function can be selected when performing print copy*.

Reprinting
The following provides an explanation of the procedure for reprinting from film that has been previously printed and cut.
Printing from Film Reprinting

Un-cut negative film are managed in units of 1 roll per order. Film that has previously been printed and cut is managed in units of 1 sheet (1 roll) per order. In order to distinguish these from un-cut negative film, cut film is printed in the [Reprint] mode.

When [Frame No]* is clicked, the order of the frames placed on the film sheet can be checked on the display. Since the number of prints and so forth indicated on the sheet can be specified directly on the screen, this function provides added convenience when there are variations in the number of prints to be reprinted.
Specify the settings (use/nonuse of index print, print size, output type, etc) in accordance with the type of film.
Install a paper magazine* by viewing the print size displayed in the status section.

On the 6 frame prejudge screen, all frames are displayed in the PASS state.

Cautions When Accepting Orders for Digital Camera and Media Prints
When printing image data captured with a digital camera, it is necessary that the data be stored on media that can be used by the R1 SUPER.
Check the name of the digital camera manufacturer, model and media when accepting an order from a customer at the store.
In the case the data brought in by a customer is stored in a digital camera of the internal memory type, explain to the customer that the image data must first be copied from the internal memory to another media (refer to the table above) before it can be printed. If the media brought in by a customer cannot be used, explain to the customer that the media cannot be printed at the store and return it to the customer.

In the case the media brought in by the customer is SmartMedia, caution is required when handling. Be careful not to touch the pin surfaces directly.

Never touch the pin surfaces.
If the media brought in is not inside a case, request the customer to bring it inside a case the next time it is brought in.

Check with the customer that there is a backup of the data.
Always request the customer to make a backup of the data.

Inform the customer that although all media is handled with the utmost care regardless of whether there is a backup, and that the warranty covers the providing of new media in the unlikely event that an accident should occur, the store cannot take any further responsibility.
Check the contents of the images.

The following provides an explanation of checks that should be made to avoid problems. Obtain the consent of the customer in advance in cases applicable to Cases 1 through 4 below.
Case 1: Have the images been processed with a PC?

Some customers may have processed the image data with image processing software.
Check that the saved data is in the Windows file format. In addition, print the data using the Media* mode if the data has been processed, or print using the DSC mode if the data is obtained directly from a digital camera. Data in the form of a Macintosh format file cannot be printed with the R1 SUPER. It must first be separately converted to the Windows file format.
Case 2: Has a digital camera been used having fewer than 1 million pixels?
Images may appear coarse even when printed with the R1 SUPER if the number of pixels of the original images is low.
Case 3: Does the data consist of still images from a digital video camera?
Images may appear coarse even when printed with the R1 SUPER if the number of pixels of the original images is low.
Case 4: Does the data contain thumbnails and are the thumbnails to be printed?
Thumbnails refer to images that have been compressed to accelerate liquid crystal display by the digital camera. Since they are intended for small display, they may appear to contain a mosaic pattern when enlarged.
Explain to the customer in advance that the resulting prints may not be favorable and obtain the customer's consent before printing.

The picture quality deteriorates considerably if images are printed that were captured with a digital camera having fewer than 1 million pixels. Request the customer to backup data recorded on media brought into the store prior to printing. Print images that have already been processed by the customer using the Media* mode.

When there are too many to display on a single screen, click scroll buttons [L] [L]. Up to 999 files can be contained in a single folder. If there are more than 999 files, create a new folder and move the excess files into that folder. Although vertically oriented images are displayed vertically depending on the model of digital camera, they are automatically rotated to the horizontal orientation on the 6 frame prejudge screen. Files having the suffixes indicated below are compatible with the file format that can be printed with the R1 SUPER. JPG (nearly all digital cameras employ this format), JPEG, BMP, CLP, DCX, GIF, ICA, ICO, PCD, PCX, PNG, PSD, RAS, SGI, TGA, TIF, TIFF, WMF, WPG, 301 Furthermore, image files in the BMP, JPEG or TIFF format can be printed from the touch panel of the printer processor unit.

The memory card is not compatible! There may be times when the memory card is unable to be recognized depending on the combination of the type of R1 SUPER PC card drive, Windows version, adapter card and so on. In such cases, the memory card may be able to be recognized with a different PC. If the memory card is able to be recognized with a different PC, the data can be printed by copying to a memory card that can be used with the R1 SUPER (such as SmartMedia or CompactFlash). Refer to the instruction manual, web site or other information sources offered by the card manufacturer for further details on the specifications of each memory card. In addition, even though a particular media may be compatible with the R1 SUPER, some cards with greater capacity released in the future or cards of certain manufacturers may not be able to be printed. The adapter card is not compatible! There are some adapter cards that are not compatible depending on the capacity of the memory card and so forth. Always make sure to use an adapter card that matches the capacity of the memory card. Refer to the instruction manual, web site or other information sources offered by the card manufacturer for further details on the specifications of each memory card. In addition, some cards of certain manufacturers may not be able to be printed. The file format is not compatible! Even though an image file format may not be able to be printed with the R1 SUPER input station, it may still be able to be printed by converting to a file format using commercially available image processing software (such as Adobe Photoshop). In addition, even though the file format may be compatible with the R1 SUPER, files may not be able to be printed when using some independent formats.

DPOF information (The title and date) can be printed on the prints.
In order to write DPOF information onto a memory card, the information must be input to the images after they have been captured with a digital camera equipped with a DPOF function (this is specified with the digital cameras of all customers). In addition, since there are limitations on the information that can be input depending on the particular camera, caution is required when printing. Even if DPOF information is compatible with the R1 SUPER, that information will not be reflected in the prints unless the camera has a function for writing that information. When a file (image) is selected, the screen border changes to white. Click the file (image) again to cancel its selection. If [Image Thumbnails] is clicked, the images are displayed as thumbnails of the finished printed images (thumbnail display takes a short period of time). Files are displayed in ascending order (respective ascending order for numbers, letters of the alphabet, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji in that order). When there are too many to display on a single screen, click scroll buttons [L] [L]. If all of the files (images) are to be printed, simply click [OK] (there is no white border around the files). Files having the suffixes indicated below are compatible with the file format that can be printed with the R1 SUPER input station. HINT
The media is not compatible! There may be times in the case of CD when compatibility with the CD drive is not recognized. When this happens, print the image after copying the data to a different medium that can be printed with the R1 using another PC. Different format! FD, MO and other media may not be able to be recognized unless they are formatted with the Windows format. Always make sure to use media that has been formatted using the Windows format. Data cannot be printed from media formatted with the Macintosh format. The file format is not compatible! Even though an image file format may not be able to be printed with the R1 SUPER, it may still be able to be printed by converting to a file format using commercially available image processing software (such as Adobe Photoshop). In addition, even though the file format may be compatible with R1 SUPER, files may not be able to be printed when using some independent formats.

Place the photograph or print on the glass surface of the flatbed scanner with the manuscript side facing down, then place the hold plate on the top.
Placing the manuscript straight on the scanner makes it easier to specify the range of the photograph or print to be scanned. In addition, close the cover of the flatbed scanner gently so as not to shift the position of the manuscript. Aligning the photograph at the corner of the flatbed corner may cause portions of the image to be cut off. The area approximate 1 millimeter from the edge of the glass is not scanned. If you want to scan completely to the edge of the image, place the manuscript several millimeters from the edge of the glass.

The flatbed scanner begins to operate. After a while, the image and cropping frame are displayed on the monitor. Perform following settings if necessary. 1 Scanning range: This lets you designate the range to be printed with numbers. If you want to print at the same size, click [Real-size]. 2 Picture priority: This function lets you obtain attractive prints with rich gradation, but slightly more time is required for scanning.

The area frames are added on the screen. Since the additional areas are initially displayed overlapping the original area frame, the overlapping area frames can be moved by dragging with the mouse.
The image shown inside the area frame is the image that will be printed.
Continue to click [Area addition] until you have added display areas corresponding to the required number of prints.
When you want to delete the area, select the area with [Select area], then click [Area delete].

Setting the Border

This function lets you set the width of the space allocated for the border as desired.

Set the dimensions of the border (white, rectangular portion). The border can be set to one of three settings consisting of BL, WB and WWB. Border width can be set in a minimum of 0.1 mm units.
Each of the settings are changed on the home screen. Do not set film to the AFC while settings are still being made.

On the R1 SUPER the portion at which an image is pasted is referred to as a window, and the manner in which the image is pasted onto the window can be set. The following provides a description of other important terms in addition to window. The portion other than the photograph that contains a background portion such as the background design in album printing or framed photos, or the character portion in caption printing is referred to as a template. In the case of normal prints, there is no template because there is no background design. Prints that contain only images without any background design are referred to as normal prints. Using Previously Printed Data (Remake)

Image data that has previously been scanned is stored (storage). In the event that printing has been contaminated with dust, reprinting can be performed under the same conditions as the previous printing operation by using storage data.

In the R1 SUPER, the sort numbers (order numbers) are counted automatically for each order to maintain a work record. If rescanning images that have been loaded previously and reprinting them under the same conditions, these images will be processed as remakes. Interrupting Printing
This function lets you interrupt printing when there is another order that you want to print immediately.

The order in which printing is performed can be changed by using the interrupt function. When there is an interrupt order, the interrupt order is given priority in processing even when in the Print Size Priority Mode. Canceling Printing

Two or more order data can be written (saved) at the same time. A maximum of 100 orders can be written at one time. When number of the data exceeds 100, pictures will automatically be saved to an external PC. If trouble occurs during the operation, retry from the beginning. You can use the storage data for writing.

Printing an Order from External PC

This part explains the printing procedure when an external PC connected in the network sends the print order to R1 SUPER. (Print orders are created in QD STATION 2 software. Orders can also be created with a designated file name.)
Make the print order on the external PC Select the order for printing Print Select [EXPC] on [Input media]
Make sure to start R1 SUPER input station after the external PC is started. Print orders from an external PC are executed as the prints from [Media].
G Creating print orders

Print orders can be created using two different methods on an external PC connected to the network.

<Creating print orders on the QD STATION 2>
Register the folder in which print orders are stored as the shared folder on the [Set external PC] screen.
Up to 20 shared folder paths can be set from an external PC.
1 Click [Setup], [16 Set parameters] and [168 Set external PC] on the home screen of the input station. 2 The [Set external PC (INDEX, Shared folder path, Data type)] screen will be displayed. Select a blank shared folder path by clicking the index number. (The background of the selected index number will turn yellow.) 3 Click [Add].

When correcting a shared folder, select the index number of the desired shared folder path, and click [Edit]. When deleting the shared folder settings, select the index number of the desired shared folder path, and click [Delete].
4 The shared folder path information screen will appear. G Shared folder path: Click [Browse]. The location of the folder will be displayed. Select [EXPC] and [Shared folder] (the folder in which print orders are stored.), set the shared folder path to [\\Cs01\\QDIF\QDPRINT], and click [OK]. The path settings can be made after the folder in which print orders are stored, is selected. G Data type: Select [DPOF]. Click [Browse], and set the shared folder path to [\\Cs-01\\QDIF\QDPRINT].

5 Click [OK] for registrating the settings. When [Cancel] is clicked, this function is cancelled without registration of the settings (the previous settings are left intact).
The shared folder path cannot be input directly using the keyboard. The path can be selected only using [Browse].
6 The screen is returned to [Set external PC (INDEX, Shared folder path, Data type)]. Click [OK] for registering the settings. When [Cancel] is clicked, this function is cancelled without registration of the settings (the previous settings are left intact).
Capture the image on the QD STATION 2 of the external PC and create print orders by click [PRINT]. Refer to the QD STATION 2 APPLICATION SOFTWARE Ver. 2 OPERATION MANUAL for the QD STATION 2 operation procedures.

Print name list

This list shows the print sizes in which prints can be made using the file name designation order. The image will automatically be rotated depending on the magazine width information. This is also useful for 90 degree rotation of the prejudgement screen (1 frame).

1 Print mode The order procedure method set at that time is displayed. (The mode always starts as manual mode.) Manual Select the desired order, and then click r [Judge Print] or e [Print] for printing. Auto The order which can be printed with the magazine set at that time, the order automatically moves to 3 [Print list] from 2 [Order list], and then the printing starts. 2 Order list All orders are displayed in a tree chart with respective orders. The tree chart is composed of two classes. The picture file names are displayed in the respective print size. When double-clicking an order folder or clicking [+] mark, print size folder will be displayed. When double-clicking a print size folder or clicking [+] mark, picture files will be displayed. When clicking the orders or files, check marks are displayed and selected. (When clicking them again, the check marks disappear and the selection is canceled.) 3 Print list The order files for printing are displayed in the same manner as the order list. When clicking r [Judge Print] or e [Print], the print list will be the target.
In case the displayed print size is not possible to be printed out with the current paper magazine, install the paper magazine* filled with paper having a width fitted to the print size.
4 Delete Delete in the order list: the orders or files selected will be deleted. Delete in the print list: the orders or files selected will be returned to the order list. 5 Size change Printing sizes of the orders or files selected will be changed.

BL border cut (Selecting whether the border cut (BL) frame is applied.) When the border cut (BL) is selected, the frame will be cut and the sheet will be printed without the frame. When [Yes] is selected, the data will be transmitted without frame as the printed sheet. When [No] is selected the data will be transmitted with frame. Caution: This item can be used only when [Real-size] is selected on the resolution box. When options other than [Real-size] is selected, [No] will be basic preset. v. Preservation form (Selecting the picture format on saved data) Standard: JPEG, TIFF, BMP can be selected in picture format. Exif: Only JPEG will be selected in picture format. vi. Selecting JPEG-Compression Rate Basic, Normal, Fine, Super fine can be selected. vii. DSC, Media processing Select "Yes", when you want to send the corrected image data to EXPC. Select "No", when you want to send the original image data without any correction to EXPC. viii. Bundle software When you want to bundle to the order, select [Yes]. When you do not, select [No]. You can bundle 2 software. ix. Select path Clicking [Select path] displays the window for selecting folders.
Click the folder in which the file to be bundled is stored from the tree chart on the window shown above, and click [OK] to confirm the desired folder. x. Copy place folder name (Setting the place in which the folder will be copied) With the keyboard, directly input the folder name which the bundle soft will be stored on [Copy place folder name]. 3 Setting output destination When clicking [Output place specification], the window for selecting up to 10 passes in which the file to be output. Input the destination in each text box of [Output place 1] to[Output place 10]. You can also click each [Browse] to display the [Folder reference] dialogue, and then directly select the folder.
When clicking [Delete], the corresponding distention will be deleted (set to null). Glossary
Types and Sizes of Film
24EX film
Film containing 24 exposures. The EX stands for exposure.

Full size
The image projected on the 35 mm film of which the screen size is 24 mm x 36 mm.
35mm film
Most commonly used film.
Half size
The image projected on this 35 mm film is displayed on the screen at half of the full size.
APS (IX240) film

This film is contained in a dedicated cartridge, and the print size and other information can be registered according to the magnetic and optical information.
Brownie film
Film in 120/220 size. Screen sizes can be selected from 6 9, 6 8, 6 7, 6 6, 6 4.5(semi-size).
Color negative film

Film that is most commonly used. A sepia tone film is also a film of this type.
Refers to a colored photograph. There are also black-and-white prints.
Color print
Film provided with a lens in which 35 mm or IX240 (APS) film is installed.

Monochrome film
Black-and-white film.
Panorama size
Film screen size for panorama prints (13 x 36 mm).
Pocket film
Film dedicated for use with a pocket camera. It is also referred to as 110 film.
Reversal film
This film is also referred to as positive film. The film is developed to a positive film (slide).
Surface quality
The physical properties of the emulsion side of the paper (flat or irregular surface, or having a special pattern) are referred to as the surface quality. Differences in surface quality appear directly as differences in the print surface. Types of surface quality include glossy, silk and Supre-Luxe. The most common type of surface quality is glossy (GL), and results in prints having a beautiful, glossy surface.

Characteristics of Film and Paper

Base surface (Base side)
Back side of the emulsion side. On this side, the frame number can be read normally on the negative.

Blank
Area on the film that is not exposed (no image is shown).
DX code
A bar code that indicates the manufacturer and the type of the film.
Emulsion number
Number assigned to the manufacturing lot of each film paper.
Emulsion side
The side on which the emulsion is coated. On this side, the frame number appears reversed on the negative.
The F key is used to correct negatives that have been shot under light such as fluorescent light in a room, other than natural light or stroboscopic light.

F (Full correction) Key
Photographing and Print Finish

Blurring
This is caused by movement of the camera or by enlarging.

The sharp distinction between brightness and darkness (in a scene).
Contrast
Density
The pixel density of the film surface and the density of color prints.
Different light source

Color film develops to beautiful prints when photographed under the sun as a light source. A light source other than the sun (e.g., sunlight at dawn or dusk, indoor fluorescent lamp, tungsten lamp) is called different light source.
Front focus/Back focus

Front focus refers to the camera being focused on an object in front of the object to be photographed, while back focus refers to the camera being focused on an object at the back of the object to be photographed.
Opposite light
A scene that is photographed with a bright light in the background.
L (Lowered correction) Key

The L key is used to correct the color failure negative (a large area of the image is assigned to a specific color, with other areas assigned to the opposite color).
Fogging
Area on the film paper that is exposed (black section).
Frame number
The bar code of each frame displayed above the negative image.
Frame number
The number of each frame displayed below the negative image.

ISO sensitivity
Film sensitivity determined by the ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Indicates the films sensitivity to light in number (ISO100, 200, 400, etc.).
Glossary
Perforation
Holes provided at the top and bottom of the 35 film.
Poor focus
Indicates that an image is not in focus.
Proper exposure
Providing of exposure that matches the sensitivity of the film.
Shutter speed
The speed at which the shutter closes, and is used to adjust the amount of light.
Stop
An increase or decrease in the amount of light. This performs the same function as the iris of the human eye.
Three primary colors of light

These colors serve as the basis of visible light, and consist of blue (B), green (G) and red (R). Since the mixing of these colors results in white, they are also referred to as the three primary colors of the additive color process.
Three primary colors of paints

These colors serve as the basis for paints and printed matter, and consist of yellow (Y), magenta (M) and cyan (C). Since the mixing of these colors results in gray and black colors, they are also referred to as the three primary colors of the subtractive color process.

Acceptance and Processing of Development
Color failure
Scenes on the screen in which the majority of the screen consists only of one color.
Mixing of different processing solutions.
Density failure
Large differences in density between the primary object being photographed and its surroundings in a scene on the screen.
Contamination
Film development only without printing.
Expiration date
The date printed on a film carton or paper package that indicates that beautiful prints can be obtained if the film or paper is used before that the warranty period of manufacturer. (It only works when stored under appropriate condition.)
Development only
Film cartridge
Metal cartridge that contains 35 mm film before development.
Lead
The tip portion of 35 mm film.
Lead-in
Withdrawing the tip of the film from the 35 mm film cartridge before development.
Negative sheet
Sheet for storing each piece of developed film after cutting with 6 frames/4 frames.
Seals with same numbers attached to a photo receiving bag and the film to be developed.
No. label
Normal negative
Negative containing a good image that has been adequately exposed on the film.
Overdeveloped negative
Negatives having high density (excessively dark) all over as a result of excessive exposure conditions in comparison with normal negatives. However, although the entire surface of the negative may be black as a result of photographing in front of a white background, these negatives are not referred to as overdeveloped negatives.

Underdeveloped negative
A negative having low density (excessively light) as a result of exposure conditions being insufficient as compared with normal negatives. However, negatives in which the primary object being photographed is clearly depicted while the background is too light, such as photographs shot with a flash, are not referred to as underdeveloped negatives.
Abnormal negative
Film is similar to fresh food in that the more promptly it is used and developed, the more beautiful the prints result. Colors tend to disappear or fade when film is not used for a long period of time, and negatives in which this has occurred are referred to as abnormal negatives. In addition, negatives resulting from film that has been affected by formalin gas or naphthalene gas are also referred to as abnormal negatives.

Remake

Short leader
Sheet (leader) for forwarding film during development.
Simultaneous printing
Entire printing process from film development to production of prints.
Splicing tape
Black tape specialized for attaching the film to a short leader.

Application software
Software used with Windows or Mac os, etc., examples of which include spreadsheet software and word processing software.
BMP (Bitmap)
This is a type of image format for Windows, and files of this format having the letters .bmp as their extension. Most photo image that are converted to data are bmp images. Since the data is not compressed, the images do not deteriorate even if they are repeatedly processed and saved.
Byte (B) / Kilobyte (KB) / Megabyte (MB) / Gigabyte (GB)

Units of data size. One alphabetic character uses one byte. 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 GB = 1024 MB
CD-R
A write-enabled CD. Some CD-R can contain 600 MB of data or more. Once the data is written, it cannot be erased (although data can be added).
CD-ROM
A read-only CD. CD-ROMs are often used as a storage medium for application software due to their large capacity.
Click
Pressing the mouse button.
CompactFlash / SmartMedia / Memory Stick

Storage media used with digital cameras. Storage capacity ranges from 4 MB to 32 and 64 MB or more.
Camera that records images on a medium by converting them to electrical signals (digital signals) without using film.
Digital camera
Digital image
Image composed of the collection of small dots (pixels).
dpi
The abbreviation of dots per inch which represents the number of dots contained in one square inch (2.54 cm).
Drag
Moving the mouse while pressing the mouse button.
FD (Floppy disk)
General storage medium that contains about 1.4 MB per disk.

Format (Initialization)
Initial setting of floppy disks and other storage media so that they can be used.
HD (Hard drive)
Storage medium contained within a PC.
JPEG
Indicates the method of compressing static images or images compressed. This method compresses data by thinning the data, and files containing images compressed in this manner have the extension .jpg. Although data is compressed while preventing deterioration of the image as much as possible, the image becomes unclear if it is compressed at a high compression rate, and the image quality deteriorates if the processing is repeated many times. In addition, this is a non-reversible method in that images cannot be returned to their original state once they have been compressed.

Photo-electromagnetic storage media having a storage capacity of 230 MB or 640 MB per disk. This medium tends to be used as a storage medium during image processing, and data can be rewritten repeatedly.
Mouse
Device that can give orders to a PC.
OS (Operating system)
This is the basic software for using a PC, examples of which include Windows, Mac os and so forth.
Photoshop
Adobes application software for processing images.
PICT
Image format used with Macintosh. BMP images are treated as PICT images in Mac os PCs.
Pixels
Minimum unit of a digital image that refers to the dots of the image.
Resolution
The fineness of an image that is generally indicated as dots or dpi. The larger the value, the finer the image.
TIFF
A type of image format that can be used by both Windows and Mac.

R1 SUPER Terms
Back printer
A printer that prints printing conditions (including frame number, Y/M/C color key, density key and other values) on the back of the print paper.
Channel
The printer contains memory for accumulating various information. All information required for proper operation of the printer is input into memory, and that memory is referred to as a channel. Separate channels are provided for the master, and paper, etc.
Control Strips (CS)

The processors used in the R1 SUPER consist of a film processor and paper processor, and their respective control tools are different. The tools are referred to as control strips (CS). In the case of the CS of the film processor, the gray scale, Y/M/C 3color color batch and black and white batch are printed, after which they are processed with a processor and compared with the enclosed standard paper (reference) in order to evaluate the result. CS processing makes it possible to comprehensively check not only processing characteristics, but also the occurrence of scratches and soiling, exposure, drying status and all other printing parameters.
Dark bag
A black bag made of a thick material that was designed for the purpose of handling unexposed film or paper in a lighted room. Since the bag is capable of completely blocking out light, it allows the obtaining of the same conditions as those of a dark room.
Numbers are assigned in latented image in advance to each frame of a film, and when the film is developed, these numbers are represented in the form of numbers and a bar code on the edge of the film (outside the perforation). This number is referred to as the frame number, and is used when taking out the required frames during use of the auto film carrier (AFC).
Frame number (FN, Frame No.)
Jam
Jam is a term that refers to an object being forcibly pushed in or packed in, and refers to the forwarding of film or paper through the system being interrupted during the course of processing due to some kind of problem. When the warning sounds, immediately discontinue operation and remove the film or paper. Failure to correct the situation promptly can lead to serious damage to the system.
Replenishment (Amount)
Each processing solution becomes depleted as a result of processing the paper. The liquid that is added to replenish this depletion is referred to as replenishment. The components of the replenishment of color developing solutions are slightly more concentrated than the processing solution in the processing tank, so that the amount added must be strictly observed. If the amount added is insufficient, depletion progresses and the prints become underdeveloped, while if added in excess, the prints become overdeveloped.

Setup
The operation to properly set up the film scanner and processor. The respective setup procedures are performed with different methods.
Water compensation (Evaporation compensation)

The compositions of each processing solution must be kept constant in order to obtain beautiful prints at all times. However, the temperature of the processing solutions can become high, approaching 40C in the case of the color circulation solution in particular. Consequently, if processing has not been performed, water evaporates causing the solution to become concentrated and leading to a change in the properties of the processing solution (becoming thick). In order to compensate for this, water should be added at completion of processing work up to the level of the overflow port.
