Wednesday,February29,2012ThePembrokePinesCityCommissionpassed Resolution3330directedtothePresidentoftheUnitedStates,BarackObama,on February1,2012byaunanimousvoteaskingthatheintercedewitharecent announcementthatICEofficialshavetentativelyselectedtheaffluentandbucolic TownofSouthwestRanchesasthesolelocationfortheirnewestImmigrationPrison /DeportationProcessingCenter. TheMiamiHeraldreportedontheimpactofthegrassrootsresidentsmovement againsttheprisonandtheirgrowthinsophisticationastheyformedaPAC,andas theyescalatetheissueintoafullblownpoliticalcampaignwithnational ramificationsduetoDNCChairwomanDebbieWassermanSchultzsandSenatorBill Nelsonsilladvisedwrittenendorsementoftheproject.Readmorehere: http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/02/23/2655981/campaignsgearupfor against.html ThesiteisaSouthwestRanchesislandoflandoutsidetheTownsmaincontiguous sectionsandissurroundedbybothCityofPembrokePinesresidentsand unincorporatedBrowardCountyland.Thereare16,000homesand24,000school childrenwithinafewmileradiusoftheproposedprison. PembrokePinesisthe11thlargestcityintheStateofFlorida,sotheCity CommissionexpectsthatthePresidentshouldatleastrespondtothisimportant cryforhelpfromtheCommissiononbehalfofitsresidentsandbusinessesthat wouldbethreatenedmostbythisfacility.Nearlyamonthhaspassedandthe Presidenthasnotyetrespondedtothisofficialresolution. NoneoftheRepublicanpresidentialfrontrunnershavecommentedonthesitingof theseSecureCommunitiesprisonshereaswellasinotherDemocraticstrongholds suchasCrete,IL,justsouthwestofChicago,PresidentObamasoldhometown. SecureCommunitiesisanICEinitiativetodeport400,000illegalaliensayearwith criminalinvolvementandallegedlyrequiresthebuildingofmanynewprivatelyrun prisons/deportationprocessingcenters. WillthePresidentstepinandprotectthepeopleinthisareafromaprojectthathas beenkeptsilentbyCorrectionsCorporationofAmerica,LLCthroughinviteonly advisorymeetingspolicyofaconeofsilencebytheTownofSouthwestRanches identifiedthroughpublicrecordsrequestsandimplementedbyrequestofDHS/ICE andCCA?SouthwestRancheshas7200residentsandissituatedbetweenWeston andPembrokePineswithmorethan200,000residentsinbothmunicipalities affectedbySouthwestRanchesdecision,SenatorNelsonsandCongresswoman Schultzsendorsementtobringthistroublesomefacilityintothearea.

HistoricalBackground CorrectionsCorporationofAmerica,LLC(CCA)purchasedthreeparcelsofland totaling20acresin1998fromlandbaronRonaldBergeron.Mr.Bergeronsold otherparcelstohomedevelopersascloseas2000feetwayfromtheparcelsthat CCAhadpurchased.CCAwaiteduntilthatareawasbuiltupwithhighdensity plannedcommunities,stateoftheartschools,andapristinenaturepreservebefore announcingtheirintenttocourtICEforwhatwouldbethebiggestimmigrant deportationcenterinthecountry.Thisfacilitywasoriginallyplannedtobethree timeslargerthantheKromeDetentionCentertwentymilesawaysouthoftheCCA facility. ResidentswhorecentlylearnedaboutthisplaninJuneof2011becameoutraged thatanyonewouldthinkofexpandingprisonconstructioninwestBrowardCounty. Thesoleprisonlocatedoutwest,BrowardCorrectionalInstitution,isastaterun facilityofdormitorystylehousingandhasbeenslatedtocloseonMay1stof2012 duetothedeclineinstatewideprisonpopulationaswellastheageofthefacility (builtcirca1977). Wearenotawareiftheexpansionofpopulationinthesurroundingareamayhave hadbeenadeterminingfactorintheStateofFloridasdecisiontoclosethisfacility; however,thelandscapeinwestBrowardhaschangedradicallyoverthepastforty years.TheCityofPembrokePinesisworkingcloselywithBrowardCountyto ensurethatthefacilityisdowngradedfromprisonuseinanefforttorevitalizethe area.BCIsclosurewasalwaysthehopeoftheresidents.Thisshouldbeatimeto takeaseriouslookatthedevelopmentinthearea,andtodevelopenvironmentally friendlyindustries,whicharecompatiblewithlifeontheedgeoftheEverglades. http://www.noprisonswr.org
