Learning objectives

Activities
Introduction Discuss what the children know about Keeping Healthy what does this involve and what does it mean? Children work in groups to brainstorm ideas on these headings; keeping healthy, balanced diet, exercise, types of food, what food does for the body, what exercise does for the body, harmful substances Discuss childrens ideas, each group explains their ideas Individually the children produce a mind map on keeping healthy using the sub-headings. Quiz general knowledge on keeping healthy http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/healthyeating_mil.ppt#257,1,Who%20Wants%20To%20Be %20A%20Millionaire? How many can the children get right? Ginn P.2 True/false quiz Poor Diet

1 To ascertain childrens knowledge on healthy eating To discuss ideas and produce a mind map of current knowledge

To describe how an imaginative idea about the relationship of diet to health was tested To produce a drama which demonstrates the childrens knowledge on scurvy 2 To discuss and know the

Explain what scurvy is and how sailors in the past developed it Explain how babies from well-off families in eighteenth century Paris survived less well than babies from poorer families (QCA) Explain how this puzzled doctors and how they thought of explanations and tested them to find a solution Scurvy PP Find out about peoples diets from the past and how this has influenced current trends http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/story_of_scurvy.ppt - Mary Petley Ginn P.4 Read the story of the British sailors getting scurvy and discuss the symptoms Children explain to each other about scurvy Act out a drama based on the story in small groups and show to the class Homework write a summary of the scurvy study from a sailors point of view

Balanced diet, food groups

different food groups To identify what foods belong to each group To make an informative poster persuading people to eat healthily To know that to stay healthy we need an adequate and varied diet To keep a record of food eaten during the week and analyse how healthy the meals were 3 To know that to stay healthy we need an adequate and varied diet To identify fruit and vegetables as essential components of a healthy diet To make a menu which takes into account the importance of eating healthily To prepare a healthy lunch

Discuss what different foods people eat and how the foods are different all over the world Explain that peoples diets are different, but they have something in common food groups Discuss what food groups are and what foods go in each group Read PP and discuss http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/EatingabalancedDiet.ppt#256,1,Eating%20a %20balanced%20Diet or http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/pdfs/HealthyDiets.pdf From their newly acquired knowledge, sort the foods! http://www.crickweb.co.uk/ks2science.html Watch Daily Food Choices for Healthy Living on United Streaming (US) and children make notes Children will design and make a poster about food groups, the food pyramid, what foods do for our bodies and what foods to eat in moderation (Assessment) Homework: Watch Good Food Diner, The. (14:00) Complete a food journal for the week Bring in examples of different food types for a classroom display

Balanced diet, healthy eating Discuss what foods traditionally come from which countries Look at the PP http://www.foodafactoflife.org.uk/Sheet.aspx?siteId=3&sectionId=36&contentId=49 Review the work on food groups and a balanced diet. Choose parts from http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/Healthy_Eating.ppt http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/healthy_eating_SC.ppt Children will use the information from the PP to devise a new cafeteria menu, focussing on healthy eating and a balanced diet, as well as being attractive to the consumer work in pairs Healthy lunch Children will prepare a healthy lunch for themselves; a chicken salad and a fruit salad with a small scoop of ice-cream They will clean, chop and prepare the food for their class. Between the main course and desert, the children will explain to their parents the importance of a balanced diet using the information they have learnt. To know that we need exercise to stay healthy and to maintain our muscles To investigate the fact that when we exercise, our muscles work harder To explain after exercise how we feel eg hotter, tired because our muscles have worked harder To explain and persuade people to exercise more

Exercise

Allow the children to have five minutes extra running around. Describe and explain in terms of the muscles working what happens during and after playing games or doing other strenuous exercise eg we breathe faster, feel hotter, feel tired and what happens after a short rest. Look at Why we need exercise PP and make notes http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/Exercise.ppt or http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/Keeping_Healthy_LB.ppt#256,1,Keeping %20Healthy Read Page 8 Ginn Watch selected extracts from Exercise! It's Good For You! Why Exercise? Exercise: Feel Good, Think Sharp, Look Your Best Design and make a leaflet which explains and persuades people to exercise more. Focus on; the benefits of exercise; what types of exercise you can do, expected levels, what happens if you dont exercise Complete leaflet for homework using the internet for more information. Children should cite sources. Homework: watch OrganWise Guys Video: Extreme Couch Potato

5 To know that the heart and lungs are protected by the ribs To learn that the muscle in the walls of the heart contracts regularly, pumping blood around the body To know that blood vessels carry blood around the body To recognise that the heart is a pump because its muscle wall keeps contracting and squeezes the blood in it

Heart and lungs Discuss what the children know about their heart and lungs. Heart and Lungs PP good introduction http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/powerpoint/scienceheart.ppt

Listen to heart beating http://sln.fi.edu/biosci/monitor/heartbeat.html Look at the interactive map of the heart and explain its job http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/heart/heartmap.html http://www.smm.org/heart/heart/top.html Children will complete a Heart labelling and cloze procedure http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/pdfs/3heart.pdf Children will draw and label the heart and explain how the blood travels around the body and why

forcing blood to move around the body To describe eg through making annotated drawings that the heart pumps blood round the body

Heartbeat calculator http://www.smm.org/heart/tools/calculator.html Homework children will find fantastic facts about the heart on the internet and write them in their own words http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/heart/heartfacts.html http://www.primaryresources.co.uk/science/pdfs/3heart.pdf

To know how to measure their pulse rate and relate it to heart beat To represent data about resting pulse rate in a bar chart and to say what this shows To identify factors which could affect pulse rate and make predictions about the changes To plan an investigation to test the prediction To construct a line graph to show the effects of exercise on pulse rate and interpret these

Pulse rates Discuss what pulse rate means and how to check pulse Ask children to speculate about factors which could change the pulse rate Investigate the relationship between exercise and pulse rate. Discuss with children what sort of exercise they think raises pulse rate most and why it is important to investigate the effect on several children, not just one. Carry out their investigation on pulse, use heart rate monitor from science lab. After children have carried out their investigation, demonstrate how to represent their data as a line graph. Talk with children about what their graph shows and, if possible, show them other graphs or data relating to changes in pulse rate and ask them to interpret these.

To know that substances like tobacco, alcohol and other drugs can affect the way the body functions and these effects can be harmful To know that medicines are also drugs and also affect the way the body functions but the effects are usually beneficial though there may be side effects To present information effectively to children

Drugs, alcohol and tobacco Review what children know and understand from the previous key stage unit Health and growth (Unit 2A). Explain the definition of a drug as any substance which changes our physical or mental state and talk with children about possible side effects.

Read and discuss the PP on drugs, alcohol and tobacco http://www.nwnet.org.uk/pages/ict_curric/science/downloads/science_unit5a.ppt#278,23 ,Slide 23 Read P.16/18 Ginn Drugs and Alcohol Series for Children: Happy, Healthy, Drug-Free Me: Part Two What About Tobacco? (A Sunburst Title) Children write a speech/PP to present to Year 4 about the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco and what effects they can have on the body.
