Say Sorry! Protest

Weekend Sun offices, No. 1 The Strand 1pm, Monday 12 March

Join us as we demand an apology from the Weekend Sun for labelling all the people of Merivale as dangerous. Bring a sign with Say Sorry! on it. This is a non-violent and whanau-friendly protest. No patches or colours please.

Why are we protesting?

On Wed 7 March, the Sunlive website posted an online Opinion Poll asking: what is Taurangas most dangerous suburb? Early that evening, over 70% had ticked Merivale. This survey closely followed the tragic stabbing in Baycroft Ave the previous weekend. The only other possible choices in the survey were Gate Pa, Welcome Bay, Papamoa East and Judea. These communities all have a higher proportion of Mori and Pasifika people and poverty. The Opinion Poll insinuates that poor & Mori/Pasifika communities are dangerous by their very nature. Our last few days of action have seen the following progress: - Sunlive (the online news of the Weekend Sun) did an article of positive news about Merivale to change the perception; - The Opinion Poll was changed today. How else can you be involved: - Twitter: message your thoughts to @MCCentre, include @sunlive_nz & hashtag #SunApology - like our page www.facebook.com/MCCentre & get involved in the debate. - Write a Letter to the Editor.
