School Closing Advisory Committee Minutes from Monday, March 12, 2012 Absent: Michael DuPree, Joe Petito,

Glenn Watson The meeting began at 6:00 p.m. Dr. Fischer welcomed everyone, and then asked if each member could introduce themselves. It was stated that the advisory committee was formed due to the fact that we have five buildings and the number of students we currently have can be accommodated in four buildings. It was also stated that due to the continued increase in operating costs, coupled with a significant decrease in State Aid and the tax cap formula, the District needs to look toward closing a school. Dr. Fischer shared that this meeting was intended to provide an overview of the process, an opportunity to discuss the study with Dr. Martin, and to set up the structure for sub-committees. An overview of the budget was provided along with a two year history of utilizing fund balance to offset the budget deficit. Dr. Philip Martin was introduced and gave a review of the Enrollment & Capacity Study. He detailed the process used for enrollment projections and new construction projections. Dr. Martin shared with the committee his process that led to the recommendation that HPE be identified as the school to close. The committee then engaged in a question and answer session with Dr. Martin. Dr. Fischer gave a presentation on the task and structure of the committee. See attached powerpoint. The committee discussed the need to have additional meetings in order to make a recommendation to the Board of Education in a timely manner. Two additional meetings were scheduled for March 19th and April 9th. It was determined by the committee that meetings should take place in buildings with the opportunity to tour the building just prior to the meeting. The meeting on March 19th will be held at Ralph R. Smith Elementary School. All future meetings will be held in one of the elementary schools. A schedule of meetings and locations will be posted. An additional day will be set aside for visiting buildings so that all elementary buildings may be toured by the end of March. Participants signed up for sub-committees. The meeting ended at 8:00 p.m.
