Inside the Pakistan Army-Carey Schofeld-Short Book Review-By Agha.H.

Amin

When I bought Carey Schofelds book , I expected to learn something useful about an army from where I retired in December 1993. Careys book was a grand disappointment . A collection of small incidents , mostly tactical , weak in analysis and more of a public relations pamphlet rather than any serious reading. Shows lack of depth not only of the author but of the Pakistan Army for having financed or supported such a drab and mediocre book ?

Carey Schofeld was sponsored by Pakistan Army to write this diasastorous book ! Her bills at the five star Serena Hotel were paid by the Pakistani military and she was given full logistic support and access to the armys officers , formations and taken to war zones like FATA. Why Carey was selected may be linked to Pervez Musharrafs interest in women. While this is understandable and human , what Carey produced was totally disappointing. Careys analysis centers few incidents of company level in FATA.Her analysis of Pakistan Army is superficial and non critical. She fails to present the bigger picture and remains stuck in outward and non essential details. How such a non serious analysis was

commissioned and sponsored by the Pakistan Army is simply inexplicable.

The book does not describe the major divisional level operations of Pakistan Army in FATA like Major General Tariq Khans landmark operations of 14 Division. The book simply brushes under ground the reason why Tariq Khan was stopped when he was about to deliver the real strategic coup de grace to the South Waziristan Taliban. The book also ignores how the Frontier Corps literally rescued the regular troops in Swat. The book does not contain one single decent map illustrating operations in tribal areas. The book does not contain any credible discussion about the ISI, about Pakistans Nuclear doctrine, about Pakistans strategic nuclear forces, about Pakistan Armys highly flawed assessment and highly artificial training system. Schofeld has a strange obsession with Major General Ameer Faisal Alvi . Alvi a hard drinking man with a reputation of being a loud mouth was a macho soldier with records in assault course but was not known to be a cereberal general.Schofeld makes allegations about Alvis murder which are un substantiated and thus in bad taste.

Schofeld makes no analysis of the arbitrary legal system of Pakistan Army where even a general officer can be dismissed without assigning any reason and in which a commissioned officer has less security of his commission than a sweaper of any normal third world army ? Schofeld has more talent to be a novel writer and Pakistan Army should better have selected her to write a novel with her beloved Ameer Faisal Alvi as the knight in shining armour and Tariq Majeed and Mian Nadeem Ejaz as villains.
