*Academics using social media

Melonie Fullick // @qui_oui

what are academics doing with these tools?

we are enhancing the public & academic conversation, while enriching our own work. but how?

knowledge translation:

academic mode: slower, lengthier, highly processed, usually formal.

Deploying the triple helix model of academic industry government relations recently developed elsewhere an emergent entrepreneurial paradigm is outlined in which the university plays an enhanced role in technological innovation. (Etzkowitz et al., 2000, p.313)

social media mode: quicker, shorter, more immediate, personal, often informal.

@qui_oui: Etzkowitz et al 2000: uni-govt-industry triple helix necessary for university role in economic innovation. Agree @robannan? #HigherEd

micro-blogging: short & sweet

blogging:

What are we doing with social media?

meeting new people

engaging students

sharing research

gaining resources and support from others

the big conversation

reasonable reservations

wheres the impact happening?

translating, sharing and collaborating work against the the private good model of knowledge, but theyre good for innovation and dissemination of new ideas and knowledge.
