Reference Collection Evaluation Focus: Economic Understandings for Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia
Submitted to: Dr. Stephanie Jones Georgia Southern University FRIT 7134
Learner Analysis I focused on three specific sixth grade Social Studies standards for this reference collection evaluation plan. Currently, there are nine sixth grade Social Studies classes. All sixth grade Social Studies classes are taught by three teachers (Hansard, Moller, and Jones). These teachers participated in a survey that led to the standards chosen for this collection development plan. Teacher

Thinking Maps are utilized frequently to assist students with understanding. Special needs students are provided accommodations which include extended time for assignment completion, guided notes, information presented visually, information broken into smaller parts, having their tests read, pre-tests, differentiated assignments, differentiated teaching methods, and extension activities. Students, both and without special needs are grouped into small group instruction with a mixture of students
(gifted, no accommodations needed, and other special needs students). When possible, students are provided with choice of assignments and presentation methods. Curriculum Review/Mapping The following Georgia Performance Standards will be focused upon by the classroom instructors: SS6E3 The student will describe factors that influence economic growth and examine their presence or absences in Latin America and Canada. SS6E7 The student will describe factors that influence economic growth and examine their presence or absence in Europe. SS6E10 The student will describe factors that influence economic growth and examine their presence or absence in Australia. a. Explain the relationship between investment in human capital (education and training) and gross domestic product (GDP) b. Explain relationship between investment in capital (factories, machinery, and technology) and gross domestic product (GDP) c. Describe the role of natural resources in a countrys economy. d. Describe the role of entrepreneurship
In order to meet standards SS6E3, SS6E7, and SS6E10, students must understand the basics of economics and how investment in education and training, factories, machinery, and technology affects Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Students also need to understand the importance of a countrys natural resources and entrepreneurship on economic growth. Teachers focus on making sure the students understand the basics of economics by providing a lesson on economic basics. In addition to completed activities from students textbook and workbook, students are also expected to work in groups to produce an invention and choose a famous entrepreneur in history to research and present findings.
Activities/Projects SS6E3; SS6E7; SSE610: Describes factors that influence economic growth and examines their presence or absences in Latin America and Canada, Europe, and Australia a. Students choose from selected topics about Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia to research and present findings b. Students participate in lesson on basics of economics c. Students choose famous inventor/entrepreneur to research and present findings d. Group invention project e. Course text assignments
Accessible Resources PowerPoint to introduce topic. Thinking Maps/Tree Maps for brainstorming. Course text Presentation software (PowerPoint, Inspiration, etc.) for student generated presentations on specific topics/people. Internet access to websites after website evaluation lesson.
Collection Evaluation I used our Aged Report from Follett to guide this reference collection evaluation. I chose four methods to examine including a teacher survey, copyright data, count, and condition of existing resources. Method 1: Teacher Survey I began by sending out a teacher survey to all three Social Studies instructors asking them what additional resources they thought was needed. These instructors have taught Social Studies an average of four years and are very familiar with the resources currently on hand. I used the very simple and user-friendly Google Docs to determine what teachers felt they needed in order to meet the above mentioned sixth grade Social Studies standards. From the teacher survey, I determined on which standards to begin. The survey clearly indicated a need for materials related to the economic understandings of Latin America, Canada, Europe, and Australia.
Method 2: Copyright Date Next, I examined the report for aged copyright dates. I found the collection as a whole has an average age of 1996. Specifically, we currently have 779 total items with an average age of 1988 in our reference collection. This Aged Report reveals titles that are fifteen years of age and older. I also looked at other areas where resources might be found for these particular Social Studies standards. I found some materials located in the 300s and 900s of the nonfiction section. Again, many of these resources were considerably outdated. The information found while examining copyright dates of all applicable resources was evident that newer and updated reference materials are a necessity. Method 3: Count Next, I accessed the count of the different reference materials such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, and thesaurus. I found that we currently have several sets of each but they are quite dated with the oldest one being 1973 and the newest one being 1991. It appears that it has been quite a while since any of the reference resources were weeded. Again, this is a clear indication that we need to add updated and visually appealing reference resources. Method 4: Condition Lastly, I looked at the condition of existing resources for worn and overused conditions. I physically looked at the materials that did not appear on the Follett Aged Report in an effort to locate materials that needed to be replaced or updated due to condition. I found the existing in-date materials on hand in acceptable condition with the exception of visual appeal.
Materials Order Once I identified the strengths and weaknesses of our library collection in relation to the targeted standards and objectives, I located and compiled a list of resources to meet the needs of the learners. I obtained reviews for the resources from several locations to include the School Library Journal, amazon.com, GALILEO, and Novelist. The items chosen meet the needs of a range of learners to include our multicultural population. I have also included audio/visual resources to meet the special needs of students and to meet the needs of those students who learn best through audio and visual learning.
