Overview: During the 2009/2010 school year, Ranney Middle School grades 7 and 8 will be utilizing Prentice Halls History of Our World textbook for a survey study of various civilizations and cultures ranging from early Mesopotamia through the Modern Era. The focus of this curriculum will be on the development of major, influential powers of the world, major economic developments, the influx of new systems of thinking, new religions, and the influences and developments leading to the creation of the modern world. Rationale: The 7th grade World History curriculum will dovetail a majority of the information covered during the 6th grade year in the Geography Alive course. Under the premise that the students have already covered basic cultures on the majority of the seven continents, this will allow for a smooth, continual, and natural flow of study of both history and world cultures for the first two years of a students middle school experience. As indicated earlier, the students will investigate and study, but not be limited to, many of the major political, religious, social, economic and philosophical influences and events that have shaped our world from the dawn of early humans to the present world in which we live today. While the development of the adolescent is in a constant state of flux, it is expected that this overview of world history will provide for a basic exposure, framework and foundation of core understanding, comprehension, and a variety of skills to be utilized as the student approaches the high school setting. Overall Objectives: As one might expect, by nature, historical and cultural study is often multifaceted and finds itself often overlapping a multitude of both skills and knowledge basis. While not limited to or completely comprehensive, by any means, one could expect that upon completion of the 7th grade World History course, the student will have learned, practiced, and been exposed to the following knowledge and skill sets: Building Geographic Literacy through the Map-Master system included in the student textbook Learning With Technology through various online, video, DVD, and interactive textbook options included in the curriculum and student text Writing for Social Studies through Narrative Essays, Persuasive Essays, and Research Papers which are all referenced and included not only in the text, but also supplementary materials Map Interpretation and Projections through the skills handbook section of the student text Critical Reading Skills through exercises and writings in Comparison and Contrast, Cause and Effect, Using Context, Clarifying Meaning, Critical Thinking and Summarizing the Reading Process. Reading and Interpreting Charts, Graphs, Tables and Identifying Patterns in various data formats

Identifying Key Terms through recall, comprehension and context as described in the text Test Taking Tips and Strategies for chapter tests, midterm and final exams and standardized tests as covered in the student textbook and curriculum Basic Note Taking and Organization of assigned and expected reading material, Interpretation of Document and Primary Source Readings as expected by the Ranney School History Department

Strategies and Classroom Activities: As educators, we are acutely aware that no student learns in exactly the same manner. Thus, the strategies and activities in this curriculum will be varied in style, comprehension, length and skill and will generally reflect the many learning styles and multiple intelligences as studied in the world of education today. Therefore, one may find that some lessons will be review and reinforcement in nature, while others can be expected to reflect the Ranney School tradition of a more intensive and challenging path toward the learning process. Please note that these strategies and activities are by no means limited to just the information below. Education is a flexible process and many techniques, too many to mention in such a comprehensive course, are utilized to meet the many needs and abilities of each individual class. Hence, the following strategies and activities will be implemented in a variety of ways into the 7th grade World History curriculum: 1. Building Geographic Literacy through the Map-Master System: As directed by the teacher, students will have the opportunity to learn, practice, and interact with many geographic maps, tools, and skills. During this process, students will utilize the textbook, handouts, and the skills activities as provided by the Prentice Hall website, www.PHSchool.com. This process will be one which covers the entire year, but broken down into individual lessons and units as the course of study unfolds. In class lessons, peer learning, homework and project oriented assignments will drive this skill throughout the year. Learning With Technology through various online, video, DVD, and interactive textbook options: The students will have ample and consistent exposure to many aspects of world history and cultures through the World Studies Video Program. This online video and DVD program, in cooperation with the Discovery Channel School, will bring new information and experiences to life for the students. Likewise, each student will be taught how and when to use the online activities for each chapter as accessed through the www.phschool.com website. This website will enable students to reach beyond the classroom and investigate exciting information and activities related to lessons covered in class.

3. Writing for Social Studies through Narrative, Persuasive, Expository Essays and Paragraphs, and Research Papers : The writing component for this course will be ongoing throughout the year and will be co-curricular with the English Department in its approach when applicable. Students will learn the skill of narrative writing, persuasive writing, expository writing and research through a variety of formal and informal written assignments, homework, and projects. Writing assignments for the 7th grade will consist of at least ONE written piece for each chapter studied, and assignments for the 8th grade course will consist of at least TWO written pieces for each chapter. These writing skills will be utilized regularly both in the classroom setting as well as on every major assessment. 4. Map Interpretation and Projections through the skills handbook section of the student text: The students will utilize maps and projections in the textbook, handouts, atlases, and the SMARTboard throughout the entire course on an incremental basis. Analysis, reproduction, projection and distortions will be taught and reinforced in homework, class work, and assessments. 5. Critical Reading Skills through exercises and writings in Comparison and Contrast, Cause and Effect, Using Context, Clarifying Meaning, Critical Thinking and Summarizing the Reading Process: The student textbook and the publishers set of ancillary materials will be used for specific topic and unit assignments and lesson plans for teaching and reinforcing the aforementioned skills. In addition to these materials, the curriculum will integrate handouts and assignments from the workbooks entitled World History and Geography and World Cultures, World History Basic Skills Series as published by The Center for Learning. 6. Reading and Interpreting Charts, Graphs, Tables and Identifying Patterns in raw data format: Throughout the year, the students will periodically learn how to read, create, analyze and decipher a variety of raw data formats ranging from numeric patterns to subject matter in written context. This, of course, will be determined by the individual lesson and topics being covered at a given time during the school year. 7. Identifying Key Terms through recall, comprehension and context as described in the text: Students will increase their knowledge and vocabulary base on a daily basis through the reading assignments, writing assignments, and in class reinforcement and recall. Key term definitions, context, and meanings will be discussed and learned through this process.

8. Test Taking Tips and Strategies for chapter tests, midterm and final exams and standardized tests as covered in the student textbook and curriculum: One of the most fascinating and unique aspects of this curriculum is that each student will have the distinct opportunity to learn and practice various test taking strategies. These tips and strategies will be useful for many types of assessments including chapter tests, midterms, final exams, ERBs, PSATs and SATs. 9. Basic Note Taking and Organization of assigned and expected reading material: From the first day of school, through the final exam, each student will be taught and expected to take formal notes on all assigned textbook and supplemental reading material. For the sake of simplicity and uniformity, the 7th and 8th grade students will be taught to take notes in standard outline format. 10. Interpretation of Document and Primary Source Readings as expected by the Ranney School History Department: Various primary source readings and historical records and documents will be used periodically during the school year to supplement the material learned for each unit. Both 7th and 8th graders will learn how to analyze and dissect this information to both interpret meaning and context, and discuss its importance and place in the topic or subject being learned.

Notes and Additional Items:

1. Standardized Prep sections are available at the end of each Chapter for student practice and review. The immediate goal will be for each teacher to utilize these practice sessions at least half the time throughout the school year. In other words, students should have ample opportunity to use these sections at least every other Chapter that is covered throughout the course of the year. 2. Primary Sources are also available in the back of the student and teachers version of the textbook. 3. Skills for Life Sections are also available in student textbooks throughout each Chapter and should be used as reinforcement lessons for homework/classwork. Most focus on skills such as: Making Predictions, Making Inferences, Connecting Content and Life, etc. 4. Examples of supplemental resources are contained on the pages following these notes.

Background:

As many of you know, every civilization eventually develops traditions, rituals, and social systems that define their common, everyday existence. Clearly, some of these social characteristics are passed on from one generation to the next without any change at all. Yet, there are also times when societies do change due to the influence of other cultures. Much like Ancient Egypt, many present day nations are no different. Assignment: 1. Read the assigned handout and highlight/underline all important ideas/points. 2. Using the information in the handout and the spongy matter contained in your cranial cavity, create a chart with the following category headings: a. Marriage b. Family c. Food d. Makeup/Cosmetics/Hygiene e. Hair/Jewelry f. Clothing g. Housing/Furniture h. Entertainment i. Government structures 3. Expand your chart by now comparing each of the above categories of Ancient Egypt with life here in the United States. Requirements: 1. You may use one of the following for your final copy: a. Powerpoint with nice colors (Please put this on a flashdrive!) b. Email it to me in Word format c. Print a neat, typed, organized copy for me. 2. Be very specific in your comparison to the United States. 3. This is counted as a HOMEWORK and PROJECT grade. Be sure to do well.
