YEAR 7 TERM 2- 2012 DURATION: 10 WEEKS TEACHER: JASON ROOKS

SOSE Place & Space 4.2 Students predict the impact of changes on environments by comparing evidence (natural, social, built). PS 4.5- Students explain whether personal, family and school decisions about resource use and management balance local and global considerations- Keppel Bay/Fitzroy Delta Coal Developments. Mapping skills- world map project plotting 7 highest points, populated cities etc. Investigate various biomes- Savanna; Desert; Temperate, Rainforest, Tundra & Taiga- including flora, fauna, mans impact and why they are so important. Design & create eco-friendly resorts in chosen biome.

TECHNOLOGY -Research: * 7 most extreme environments in our world; populated cities, 7 highest mountains. -Design, make and appraise a model of a tourist resort in one of the extreme environments. -Create a brochure advertising their resort. -In groups, create an exhibit for the Extreme Environments Expo demonstrating knowledge of flora, fauna, mans impact & why environment is important.

SCIENCE Natural & Processed Materials (NP 4.2; NP 4.3) Liquid losses- does the shape of a container affect how much water evaporates? Cleaner Kitchens- which paper towel soaks up the most water? Powder Problems- which household substances dissolve the best? How Sweet- do all sugars have the same/ similar properties? Paper Problems- how are types of paper different in terms of transparency, ease of folding, strength, absorbency & elasticity?

UNIT EXTREME ENVIRONMENTS

MATHS Use of calculator- identifying key words, phrases for +, -, / & x problems, determining % off; square roots. Patterns & Algebra- definition of algebra, gathering of like facts, order of operations, determining number/visual patterns, backtracking; Fractions/ Decimals/ Percentages- definition, equivalent fractions, finding lowest common terms, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions & vice versa, ordering of fractions, decimals and %, partitioning shapes by decimals, % or fractions; Measurement- area/ perimeter of circle and other 2D shapes, parts of a circle, mm, cm, m, km, mL, L, kL, g, kg, t, appropriate units of measurement, conversion (e.g. mm- m), estimating and measuring regular & irregular shapes; Space- reflection, translation & rotation, symmetry, congruency, tessellation, compass points, using key and scale on a map; Co-ordinates- plotting co-ordinates, lines of latitude/ longitude Recall all multiplication and related division facts (12 x 12) LANGUAGE Major focus- persuasive writingcompose a letter to the editor regarding the Fitzroy Delta/ Keppel Bay Coal developments. Minor focus- Narrative- descriptive writing (haunted house). Daily reading/ comprehension groups. Weekly spelling- pre-test and test. Daily literacy skills. Comprehension activities. Listening comprehension activities. ICTS Students will be exploring the Publisher program to create tourist advertising brochures.
