o o o Grade Level: 2 Skill Focus: 4.2.1 Explain the purpose of and/or gain information from text using titles, text boxes, headings, illustrations, and tables of contents Materials white board markers book: Tian Tian, a Giant Panda Pre Reading: Procedures: Probable Passages o Using the glossary on the back of the decodable, teacher and student will make predictions on how these vocabulary words apply to the story Tian Tian, a Giant Panda. The vocabulary words include: giant bamboo bear forests panda special survive weighs wild

We will look over the definitions provided. Will apply these vocabulary words to predict the story elements (setting, characters, problem, events, and solution) of Tian Tian, a Giant Panda Setting: In the forest and in the wild. Characters: A giant panda bear named Tian Tian. Problem: The bear needs a special food to survive. Events: 1. The giant panda is hungry. 2. He looks around the wild forest for a special food. 3. He finds his favorite food, bamboo. Solution: Tian Tian eats so much that he weighs a ton. o I will ask if the students think Tia Tian, a Giant Panda is a fiction or nonfiction book, (non-fiction). Ask for explanations why they believe its fiction/non-fiction. Begin reading the story. SWBAT make predictions on the story Tian Tian, a Giant Panda based on the glossary words. During Reading Procedures o Teacher and students will choral read. o Teacher will stop at various pages to think aloud. After Page 4: Can you think of any other animals beside pandas and raccoons that are black and white? After Page 6: The book says that there are only about 1,000 wild giant pandas in China; is that a lot or a few? After page 8: Pandas eat 40 pounds of bamboo every day, whats your favorite food; could you eat 40 pounds of it every day?

After page 11: Do you like to play? How is Tian Tian like you? SWBAT choral read and answer questions with teacher. Post Reading Procedures o Teacher and students will look back at the pre reading probable passage. I will ask students if our predictions were right, (My prediction wasnt right because I composed a fictional story, but Tian Tian, a Giant Panda is an expository text. SWBAT accurately summarize how the glossary words fit in the book.
