CHAPTER II

NON IDEAL REACTOR MODELS

In this chapter a concise introduction is given non ideal reactors used or tested in the present study. Levenpsiel and Fogler give descriptions and model equations and others are found in research journals. Hence a lengthy review on standard non ideal reactor models re Several other models have been developed to capture non-ideality. We also tested a model developed by Sar . Axial Dispersion Model (ADM)

ADM is perhaps the widely applied of all non-ideal reactor models as it offers an uncomplicated mathematical description of flow systems. The governing equations are convection and diffusion terms. Diffusion is modeled, similar in approach to Ficks law. Microscopic diffusion caused by molecules and macroscopic diffusion caused due to turbulence in the bulk flow are accounted for by using a single parameter called Axial Dispersion Coefficient D. ADM model is thus a combination of transient term with convection and diffusion terms as described by the equation xx. A dimensionless parameter, Peclet number is used to describe the whole range of backmixing, from plug flow to completely mixed flow [1].

Tank-in-Series Model of Equal Volume This model has one adjustable parameter, the number of CSTRs denoted by n, and also requires the RTD function Real reactor can be approximated as a series of equal-volume CSTRs and the number of such CSTRs required can calculated [2].
