GENERIC NAME: Telmisartan BRAND NAME: Micardis DOSE/FREQUENCY/ROUTE: 40mg + 12.5 OD PO PRN DATE ORDERED: February 14, 2012 CLASSIFICATION: Angiotensin II Receptor antagonist MECHANISM OF ACTION:
Blocks the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone receptor effects of angiotensin II by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II the AT Receptor in many associated therapeutic effect: lowers blood pressure

INDICATIONS:
Indicated for the treatment of hypertension. May be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:
Contraindicated in patient hypersensitive to the drug or any of its components

SIDE EFFECTS:
CNS: Dizziness, fatigue, headache, pain CV: Chest pain, hypertension, peripheral edema GI: Abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea GU: Urinary tract infections

NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Inform patient that drug may be taken without regards to meals. 2. Note onset, duration, and characteristics of disease, other agents trailed, outcome. 3. Monitor vital signs, ECG, electrolyte balance. 4. Tell patient that if he feels dizzy or has low blood pressure on standing, he may should lie down, rise slowly from lying to standing position, and climb stairs slowly. 5. Instruct patient to take the drug at the same time. 6. Change the position of the patient slowly. 7. Observe for any sign of hypersensitivity to the drug. 8. Observe any adverse effects seen in the patient.
