Pinwheel Purse

This little purse measures about 5cm / 2", big enough to hold a few coins or perhaps some jewellery as a gift; pull the top apart and it twists open, let go and it snaps back closed again. Each purse takes less than 10g of leftover 4 ply sock yarn. I knitted mine on 2mm / US size 0 needles to give a firm tension. The Base Cast on 1 st. Next row: Kf&b, knit to end. Repeat this row until you have 25 sts on your needle. Next row: SSK (or K2tog, whichever you prefer), knit to end. Repeat this row until you are back to 3 sts. Cast off with a double decrease: Sl 1 kwise, K2tog, psso and fasten off.

The Sides These are all knitted in the same way as the base apart from one row worked in purl before beginning to decrease. This row gives the fold that makes the purse open and close. So Cast on 1 st. Next row: Kf&b, knit to end. Repeat this row until you have 25 sts on your needle. Next row: Purl. Next row: SSK (or K2tog), knit to end. Repeat this row until you are back to 3 sts. Cast off with a double decrease: Sl 1 kwise, K2tog, psso and fasten off.

Sewing the Purse Together Sew the four sides to the base, making sure that the folds all run in the same direction. The bumpy side of the purl rows should be on the inside of the purse. Then join the four side seams. The purse will not fold flat at this point, to do this it needs serious blocking! Blocking the Purse This is the most important part of this project and what makes it work, dont be tempted to miss this stage out.

Wet the purse thoroughly and then fold it carefully closed until it is square. Now leave it to dry with a pin pushed down firmly through each corner to hold it closed. It will take quite a while to dry because of all the layers but the result will be a perfect pinwheel purse.
