ABSTRACT THE CHARACTERISTIC OF PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM CATARACT WHO COME TO EYE CLINIC AT GENERAL HOSPITAL OF JAMBI 1 JANUARY

2008 31 DESEMBER 2011 Background: According to WHO, there is almost 45 million of blindness sufferers in the world, 60% living in poor countries. Around 135 million has low vision. Around 16 million (48%)of it, the blindness is caused by cataract. The blindness figure in Indonesia is the highest in area of WHO in Southeast Asia. This is caused by the imbalance of the incidence of cataract amounting to 210,000 persons per year, the number of cataract operation amounting to only 80,000 persons per year. The objective of this research is to identify the characteristic of eye sufferers who come to Eye Clinic at General Hospital of Jambi from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011. Method: This research is descriptive research. The subject of this research is all patients who come to Eye Clinic of General Hospital Raden Mattaher of Jambi from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011 who suffer from cataract. The samples are taken at medical record applying total sampling method. Result: The number of patients who suffer from cataract from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2011 is 1,009 patients who have the common cataract stadium of immature 770 patients (76.3%). The age bracket 61-65 amounting to 199 patients (19.7%), of male around (54.8%), of private employees amounting to 386 patients (38.3%), of kind of operation conducted, ECCE amounting to 309 patients (30.6%), of the demography sufferers from Jambi City amounting to 877 patients (86.9%). Conclusion: Based on the results of the research, the distribution of type of immature cataract is the highest. Cataract commonly attacks old age (aged 61-65) and mostly attack male. On the whole, cataract sufferers are mostly from private employees, and the treatment commonly conducted to cataract sufferers is ECCE. The cataract sufferers are mostly from Jambi City. There are some missing or not complete data. The variable of educational level and accompanying diseases cannot be represented. Key Words: Characteristic, Cataract Sufferer
