Step I: Preparing to Write the PlanREFLECTION

Reflect and prepare to write your PDP goal in Step II. While reflection is a required step in the PDP process, recording your reflection below is optional.

Pursuing a bachelors degree in education has allowed me to deepen my understanding of the educational system, the qualities of a good teacher and the qualifications necessary to become and maintain licensure in the state of Wisconsin. Throughout my career as a student at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville I have maintained a 4.0 in all classes within the school of education, while continuing to work full-time in addition to heavy course loads. My pre-student teaching experiences allowed me to explore the profession from an early point to assure the career choice was the right one. Some of these experiences included: 1. Volunteering in a kindergarten classroom in the Argyle School District with cooperating teacher Kimberly Stamn. 2. Pre-student teaching in a kindergarten classroom in the Argyle School District with cooperating teacher Kendra Johnson. 3. Pre-student teaching in a third grade classroom in the Argyle School District with cooperating teacher Glenda Truehardt. 4. Student teaching in a 4K classroom in the Pecatonica School District with cooperating teacher Carol Gruner. 5. Student teaching in a kindergarten classroom in the Beloit School District with cooperating teacher Kirah Zeiggler. Throughout the student teaching experiences Ive had the opportunity to self reflect, identifying many strengths and weaknesses. Some strengths Ive discovered are: organization skills, strong communication skills (especially with students), and the ability to be flexible. Meanwhile, some weaknesses Ive discovered are: giving clear directions the first time, incorporating various types of lessons throughout the day, and having quick activities readily available for any down time that may occur. Step II: Writing the PlanCOMPONENTS A. Description of School and Teaching, Administrative, or Pupil Services Situation Pecatonica School District serves two rural communities in southwest Wisconsin: Blanchardville and Hollandale. The elementary school, located in Hollandale, serves 206 students ranging from four year old kindergarten thru fifth grade. The middle/high school, located in Blanchardville, serves 214 students ranging from sixth thru twelfth grades. The student body is composed of Caucasian children of varying socioeconomic statuses. Roughly 36% of the students are considered economically

disadvantaged, and 16% of the students have an identified disability. Pecatonica School Districts mission is to fully prepare students to be educated, responsible citizens regardless of their post high school plans. In addition, the school district has laid out long term goals and project plans with measurable (SMART) goals that involve the entire community: teachers, students, parents, seniors, alumni, ect. Currently the school district is experiencing relatively low performance trends on WKCS/WSAS exams compared to similar Wisconsin school districts. There are, however, high expectations for the lower elementary students to maintain their high scores through their grade school years.

Review Checklist for Description of School Situation

Did you include a description of your teaching, pupil services, or administrative position? Did you include the number of years you have taught, been an administrator, or been in pupil services? Did you include whether the school is located in an urban, suburban, or rural setting? Did you include the ethnic, special needs, and socioeconomic makeup of the school population? Did you include your building goals/mission and/or district goals/mission?

B. Description of Goal to be Addressed

It is recommended that you use this stem: I will happening differently with student learning). (research, study, learn, apply, etc.) So that (describe what you want to see

Goal 1: I will find an elementary teaching position in the tri-state area so that I can begin to develop the professional skill set necessary to become a successful teacher. Goal 2: I will build a cooperative, professional relationship with my teaching colleagues. A cooperative approach to lesson planning/professional will allow teacher to pool their resources and ideas to better cater to students needs and curriculum goals. Goal 3: I will develop healthy teacher-parent communication relationships so that all parties feel they can communicate any concerns openly at any time. Goal 4: I will establish and maintain a feasible classroom management plan so that the greatest possible amount of learning can take place with few distractions. This plan shall include discipline strategies, organization components and full cooperation from students, the teacher and any visitors to the classroom. Goal 5: I will research, learn how to and implement literature circles in my classroom so that students are actively engaged in the material they are reading. Review Checklist for Description of the Goal
Did you describe how your goal will impact your professional growth? Did you describe how your professional growth will have an effect on student learning?

C. Rationale for the Goal: Links to Professional Situation and Wisconsin Educator Standards
Based on your reflection, describe the reason for your goal. Describe how your goal is linked to your educational situation, and write out the Wisconsin Educator Standards (two or more) that you will focus on to meet your goal.

Goal 2: I will build a cooperative, professional relationship with my teaching colleagues. A cooperative approach to lesson planning/professional will allow teacher to pool their resources and ideas to better cater to students needs and curriculum goals. Every teacher can strive to be perfect develop lessons that reach all learners the first time; however, this isnt possible without help. Using the available resources a school district has available will help you to more easily achieve this goal. One of the most valuable resources any school district can offer a new teacher is the experience of other teaching staff. Having open lines of communication with colleagues and having the humility to ask for help will be beneficial to both you and your students. For these reason, I will focus on Wisconsin Education Standard 10 which states teachers are connected with other teachers and the community, and Wisconsin Education Standard 7 which states teachers are able to plan different kinds of lessons.

Does the rationale tell how your goal connects to your school, teaching, administrative, or pupil services situation? (Choose the category that applies to your situation) Did you write out the Wisconsin Educator Standards that you will focus on to meet your goal? (must select two or more)

D. Plan for Assessing and Documenting the Goal

Record the anticipated methods you will use to assess your professional growth and the effect on student learning. It may be helpful to review steps III and IV when writing your assessment plan as they outline what is necessary when documenting your completed plan.

I will measure the achievement of this goal by the relations Ive built and utilized throughout the school year. By self evaluating each quarter what colleagues I have collaborated with and what additional resources Ive used in the classroom to improve student learning I can assess the degree to which I have satisfied my goal. Improvement in student learning will be evaluated by the effectiveness of various types of lesson plans and evaluation of both formal and informal assessments.
