Cundo usamos los verbos modales? Cuando queremos expresar la capacidad o incapacidad, posibilidad o imposibilidad, la sugerencia, conjetura, suposicin, prohibicin, permiso, obligacin, etc.
Formas simples
Sujeto + modal + infinitivo + complementos
Apuntes: Verbos Modales I Should / (ought to): debera Sugerencia, consejo: Should I tell her about our problem? .- No, I think you shouldnt, you cant rely on her. Would: forma el condicional Oraciones condicionales: If I went to Paris I would go to the Eiffel Tower. Preguntas corteses: Would you like a cup of tea? Must: Deber, (deber depara expresar duda) Forma negativa: mustnt Obligacin: You must help your mother in the kitchen Suposicin: Linda isnt coming to school, she must be sick. Used to: sola (solo se refiere al pasado) En forma negativa: didnt use to Acciones habituales en el pasado: We used to go to the park very often Need: Tener que (necesitar es el significado como verbo normal) Obligacin: Need I bring something to the party? (Tengo que?) Ausencia de obligacin: No, dont worry, you neednt bring anything
Formas compuestas
La estructura que empleamos para expresar la posibilidad o imposibilidad, conjetura, suposicin, etc. en pasado es la compuesta: Sujeto + modal perfecto = (modal +have+participio) + complementos Ejemplos en presente. Aqu empleamos la forma simple, nos va a servir para contrastarla con la compuesta: She must be at work, she hasnt arrived yet Debe de estar en el trabajo, no ha llegado an It might rain tomorrow, its very cloudy Podra llover maana, est muy nublado It could be sold out when we get to the shop. Podra estar vendido cuando lleguemos a la tienda. There is a phone call, I think its Mike. It cant be Mike, he told me he was on holidays Hay una llamada, creo que es Miguel. No puede ser Miguel, me dijo que estaba de vacaciones. Ejemplos similares haciendo referencia al pasado, esta es la forma compuesta: She must have been at work, she has left her jacket Ella debe de haber estado en el trabajo, se ha dejado la chaqueta. It might have rained, the pavement was still wet. Podra haber llovido, la acera an estaba mojada. It could have been sold out, there wasnt anyone left when we arrived at the shop. Podra haber sido vendido, no quedaba ninguno cuando llegamos a la tienda. It cant have been Mike, the one who called, he told me he was on holidays.
