Doncaster hacker faces US charges

A Doncaster man accused of involvement in an international computer hacking conspiracy is facing fresh charges over an attack on an intelligence and security thinktank. Ryan Ackroyd, 25, was indicted by US authorities in March for offences linked to a campaign of malicious cyber assaults against websites including those of Sony, Fox News and police agencies. Now a further charge, alleging that he helped breach servers belonging to security analysis company Stratfor, has been made against him. The attack on Stratfor, perpetrated by hackers who call themselves Anonymous, resulted in a large cache of stolen emails being passed to the whistleblower organisation WikiLeaks. related offences, including conspiring to bring down the Serious Organised Crime Agencys website, and plotting to break into websites run by the NHS and newspaper publisher News International. If the charges against Ackroyd do not result in conviction in the UK, it is thought likely the US will seek his extradition to face trial for the indictment made against him there. Alongside three of his alleged co-conspirators, Ackroyd is scheduled to enter a plea at his next court appearance set for 25 June at Southwark Crown Court in London.

Ackroyd is currently on bail after being arrested by Londons Metropolitan Police as part of an ongoing investigation into Anonymous and a small group of affiliated hackers known as LulzSec, who claimed responsibility for a series of attacks on multinational companies and police websites during a 50-day spree last year.
