Patient Education A current focus of AUBMC Nursing Services is to plan for, support, and coordinate a multidisciplinary approach to patient

and family education. Learning and teaching is a never-ending process, and our nurses are committed to fulfilling their expected role as patient and family educators. They aim to help patients take charge of their own health during their stay at AUBMC and stay healthy once they return home. It is our belief that educating the patient and the family enhances healthcare outcomes. It allows both the patient and the family to increase their knowledge about the illness by involving them in care decisions and learning skills and behaviors that promote recovery and a healthy lifestyle. Patient and family education at AUBMC is a multidisciplinary process that utilizes the principles of "adult learning".The learning needs of all patients are assessed at time of admission and reassessed throughout their stay. Each specialist providing care to the patient-whether physician, registered nurse, pharmacist, dietician, and/or physical therapist-contributes to the education of the patient; and the Multidisciplinary Patient Education Record is utilized to document the individualized teaching provided to the patient and family. Providing patients with information about healthcare is necessary to ensure continuity of care from hospital to home. A Patient and Family Education Manual has been prepared, following Joint Commision on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization standards of care on utilizing best practices and in consultation with specialty professionals in the field. These patient education material combined and accessible through AUBMC patient education website, are based on the most trusted reference for healthcare information, and are considered as well a comprehensive educational resource. The intended objectives from those patient education resources are: first, to provide an appropriate tool for the nurses to fulfill their expected role as patient and family educators; second, to educate the patient; and third, to help families remain active allies in the healthcare of their children and relatives. To meet our patients' educational needs, a comprehensive range of health education material, covering a wide range of common diseases-are available in English and Arabic through
