Japan's ghost town engulfed by earthquake


The biggest earthquake to hit Japan since records began 140 years ago struck the northeast coast on Friday(march 11,2011), triggering a 10-metre tsunami that swept away everything in its path, including houses, ships, cars and farm buildings on fire.

HUES AND CRIES ALL OVER


On March 11, 2011, an earthquake struck off the coast of Japan, churning up a devastating tsunami that swept over cities and farmland in the northern part of the country and set off warnings as far away the west coast of the United States and South America.

DEVASTATION CONTNUES
As the nation struggled with a rescue effort, it also faced the worst nuclear emergency since Chernobyl; explosions and leaks of radioactive gas took place in three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station that suffered partial meltdowns, while spent fuel rods at another reactor overheated and caught fire, releasing radioactive material directly into the atmosphere.

The magnitude-8.8 offshore quake, and the massive tsunami caused death toll to exceed 10,000. According to the fire agency, the number of partially or completely destroyed buildings has now reached some 3,400

Around 5.57 million households had lost power, while more than 1 million households in 18 prefectures had had their water supply cut off. The economic loss of the quake and tsunami and its long-term impact is estimated at exceeding 100 billion U.S. dollars
