KUNTI AND KRIPACHARYA

KUNTI
This time let us know about the life of Kunti who was the
mother of the great and noble Pandavas, Yudhishthira, Bheema
and Arjuna. She was the daughter of King Shooarsen of the
Yadava dynasty and thus she was the sister of Lord Krishnas father, Vasudeva. Her real name Prutha and so Arjuna was known
as Parth. Later on king Kuntibhoj, Shoorasens nephew adopted
her as he was childless. She then went on to be known as Kunti.
Once sage Durvasa visited Kuntibhojs kingdom for a few
days. During that time Kunti served him earnestly which in turn
impressed sage Durvasa. And so he taught her a divine mantra
through which she could invoke any deity of her choice and ask
for a child. As she was curious about the mantras power she
summoned the Sun God and asked for a child and thus Karna
was born.
Later on Kunti got married to king Pandu of Hastinapur.
And then she used her mantra and became the mother of her
other three sons namely Yudhishthira from the God of Dharma,
Bheema from the Vayu Devata and Arjuna from Lord Indra. She
also shared the mantra with Pandus second wife, Madri. She
bore the twins, Nakula and Sahadeva from the twin gods,
Ashvinikumars. These five together are known as the Pandavas.
Kunti was a great devotee of her nephew, Sri Krishna and
also had a great respect for Gandhari, the wife of King
Dhritarashtra.

Kripacharya is another important character of the

Mahabharata. He is one of the seven Chiranjeevis (immortals)
on the earth. He was the son of sage Sharadwan and Janapadi.
He was named Kripa. He also had a twin sister called Kripi.
Sage Sharadwan who himself was a great archer taught
archery to his children. He also gave them the knowledge of the
Vedic scriptures. Later on, King Shantanu of Hastinapur appointed Kripa as the royal guru of the Kuru dynasty. He was then
known as Kripacharya. He got his sister, Kripi married to
Dronacharya.
He was one of the seven great warriors who killed
Abhimanyu in the Chakravyuah in the war of Mahabharata. He
was one of the three sole survivors from the Kaurava army. He
also taught the Vedas and archery to King Parikshit,
Abhimanyus son and the heir of Hastinapur.

Adhyayan Varga - Bhagavad Geeta (Juhu-Vile Parle)

The 15th session of the lecture series Bhagavwad
Gita-A divine dialogue by P.P. Swamini Shraddhanandji,
organised jointly by Param Praman Darshan and
Vallabhnidhi Trust was held on 9th July 2011 at the
Goverdhan Nathji Temple, 10th Road, Juhu scheme, Vile
Parle (W). Smt. Arpita Karvat and Shri Swapnil Karvat performed the traditional Deep Pragatya and welcomed P.P.
Swaminiji with Uparna, a garland of flowers and Prasad.
P.P.Swaminiji began with the 6th chapter of the
Bhagawad Geeta called Dhyana Yoga. The primary pursuit
of any individual is attainment of Moksha, whereas the other
purusharthas viz. Dharma, Artha and Kama are secondary
pursuits. This is the essential teaching of our Vedic texts as
well as the Bhagawad Geeta. The 6th chapter talks about a
very important discipline for the attainment of Moksha viz.
Dhyana. P.P. Swaminiji cautioned the sadhaks here that
Dhyana, though very important, is not an independent
means for the attainment of Moksha.
For the sake of proper understanding, P.P.Swaminiji
divided the 6th chapter into six sections viz - (1) Qualifications required for meditation (2) Preparation for meditation
(3) Proccess of meditation (4) Object of meditation (5) Obstacles one faces during meditation and (6) Benefits of
meditation.
(1) Qualifications for meditation - In the Bhagawad Geeta,
the Lord has described 3 main qualifications for meditation.
(a) Samatvam (maintaining mental equanimity). The mind
has to be relatively tranquil for performing Dhyana which can
be attained by reducing our ragas and dveshas and also by
saving our mind from violent reactions.

(b) Vairagyam - which is attained by making Moksha the top

priority in our lives, thus all other pursuits automatically become subservient and gain a backseat.
(c) Self-confidence - One has to lift oneself by one's own efforts. Just as our mind is our best friend, but if not handled
properly, the mind can even destroy oneself.
(2) Preparation for meditation - There are 2 types of preparations viz. (a) Physical preparation such as the place should
be secluded, clean and conducive i.e. relatively quiet. The
asana should not be too high and uneven, neither should it
be underground. It should be made of a non-conducting material, neither too soft nor too hard. One needs to sit in an
upright posture with hands clasped with each other and
placed on the lap. The look should be directed to the tip of
the nose with the intention of withdrawing it from the external
sense objects. (b) Internal preparation - The Lord teaches us
to temporarily surrender everything i.e.Yoga (list of things we
wish to acquire) and Kshema (things we now possessbut
which we wish to preserve) while meditating. Also, a prayer
asking for forgiveness for all our omissions and commissions
was advised by the Lord before initiating meditation.
