Abstract :Various inorganic dichromates have long been used for the oxidation of organic compounds. However, chromic acid and it's metal salts suffer from serious disadvantages like immiscibility in most organic solvents is a limiting factors in working with inorganic chromium (VI) compounds. Further, these are rather drastic oxidants and are, therefore, much less selective. Dichromates and chromates are reactive only in acidic solutions and this creates a problem in workin g with acid-labile reductants. In view of these difficulties, a number of complexed chromium derivatives have been prepared and used in synthetic organic chemistry. Benzyhydrols are very important industrial compounds since these are starting material for the synthesis of an important class of drugs known as "antihistamines" and benadryl (-dimethyl amine ethyle ether of benzhydrol) is widely used for the treatment of allergic conditions. Investigations carried out on kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of benzhydrol by potassium dichromate. PFC, PBC, PCC, PDC, NDC, 3-MPBC, 4-MPDC in aqueous acetonitrile HClO4 medium is reported here. The product is benzophenone. The reaction is first order each in [oxidant], [benzhydrol]. Reaction is proportional to the square of hydrogen ion concentration. The rate of oxidation increases with increase in percentage of acetonitrile suggesting ion-dipole interaction. Various thermodynamics parameters have been evaluated suggests -C-H fission in rate determining step. References: 1. 2. 3. M.K. Mahanti,K.K. Banerjee;J.Indian Chem. Soc.,79,31(2004) B.L. Hiran,R.K.
