ABSTRACT

The main idea of this project is to build a hybrid Fiber-To-The-x(FTTx) and Free Space Optical (FSO) technologies as another alternative solution to bring light speed performance to residential users. This project establishes analysis, simulation and performance evaluation of transmission triple play in hybrid FTTx-FSO systems (under different weather conditions). Video signal is transmitted at 1550nm wavelength, combined voice over IP (VoIP) and data traffic at 1490nm. The signal was then split into 32 branches, with each branch connected to its dedicated FSO transmitter and propagated through the air to FSO receivers. FSO is very much influence with weather condition. Therefore, FSO channel atmospheric attenuation is based on three different weather conditions where attenuation of clear weather at 0.5dB/km, average rain at 5dB/km and heavy rain at 10dB/km. While upstream, and 1310nm wavelength is used where OLT accepts and distributes all the traffic from the network users. Bit rate of 1Gbps data link downstream and upstream configuration 1:32 splitter are going through 20km single mode fiber (SMF) and propagated through the air to FSO receivers which is individually dedicated to Optical Network Unit (ONU). From the simulation results, for downlink channel transmission alone, the optimum FSO range with acceptable BER 10-9 is 270m for clear weather, 240m for average rain and 220m for heavy rain. While for integrated upstream and downstream triple play, for downstream transmission, the optimum FSO range with acceptable BER 10-9 is 190m for clear weather, 170m for average rain and 157m for heavy rain. For upstream, regardless of changes in FSO range and atmospheric attenuation, BER value yield 3.883 x 10-19.
